The game GT5 is meant not to be a semi-simulation like its predecessors GT1, 2 or 3, but a full-on hardcore sim, which it kind of fails to do anyway.

While everyone is welcome to their feelings and their opinions, I respectfully disagree and I would like to make a few points:

-- Millions of GT5 fans have never used, let alone purchased, a steering wheel peripheral. They are still enjoying the game very much. Yes it is a game.
-- While Gran Turismo says it is The Real Driving Simulator, it would be more accurate to say it is a driving imitator in the way it mimics real physics and contains models of real cars with (sometimes) close to real specs. Many racecar drivers have used Gran Turismo to learn unfamiliar tracks, so while Gran Turismo is obviously realistic enough for that purpose, I am not aware that GT5 claims it is "meant to be hardcore." It is still a game.
-- By definition, anything hardcore will alienate most casual users. GT5 is very successful with the PS3 community because it does not alienate most casual users. Therefore, GT5 is not hardcore. It is a game.
-- Any video game with an ARCADE MODE is obviously not claiming to be a hardcore simulator.

@ DGXR

Actually I do want to clarify that GT5 was infact made to be played on a wheel. BUT with that said like any game it has to be able to play from each perspective.

GT5 and the makers actually had worked with logitech to make wheels just for GT5 (where the DFGT came to be made). But yes for people that have never driven on the wheels in GT5 won't understand what I meant about what i said earlier "if my current wheel breaks and i have no way of getting another one I will not play".

Basically it is like once you get used to it you'll never go back kind of thing

Then I guess my enjoyment is 90% less with a DS3. How did you reach that figure of 90%?:)

When I lent my wheel to my friend for a few weeks I didn't even look at GT5, the game was collecting dust on a shelf. No more fun with DS3, playing was pointless. The same was when I bought Xbox with FM4, I had to buy a decent wheel few weeks later.
If you are fond of racing games like GT5 or FM4 and you can afford to buy at least DFGT do it, by playing only with DS3 you deprive yourself of a great deal of fun and experience. That is my opinion on this matter.

Honestly I love GT5 with my wheel but as "pad" racer I don't even rate it.
Granted if you don't have a wheel you don't know what your missing so it probably doesn't seem that bad.

I have a wheel. I know what I'm "missing." :D

I still play (and enjoy) GT5 with the DS3 becuase frankly I don't find it worth the effort of setting up the wheel in the middle of the rec room just to play GT5.

I agree with you, once you entered the different world, there is no way back (at least for me)

As my DFGT pedal has broken before (got fixed now), I just go back to play GT PSP instead of GT5. If you force me to play a GT Series with pad, I will only choose GTPSP.

I miss my wheel. I sold it when I moved and didn't have the room for my setup anymore. I ranked so much higher in the time trials with the wheel.

I'm sorry, but when I hear people say stuff like the title of this thread, I really have to laugh. If any of the Gran Turismo series was "useless" with the contoller native to the Game Console it is played on, it wouldn't be as sucessful as it is. As for GT5, it is no more of a hard core sim than the rest of the series.

As far as I see it, whether you play with the DS3 or any of the wheels available, you can get good at the game. They are just tools. Use them to the best of your abilities.

As far as realism or immersion goes... it all depends on your level of imagination, the quality of drugs or alcohol you happen to be on, or how intense your delusions would seem to be.

You are only playing a game, btw... Welcome to reality.

Have a good one

I drive all the time on a pad. Some notes - it's easier to drift on a pad. Less physically tiring, and teaches you fine control as you have to be very sensitive in how you move the pad to change direction. I run all aids off except for ABS 1, often in longish races.

Also IRL you don't use controllers. So of course it's not going to feel like "the real thing".

I don't know Furinkazen. The OP'er has me convinced that I have only been fooling myself. The hours of fun I have enjoyed are a lie! :boggled:

How useless it has been, how sad and empty! If only I had known this guys values and opinions earlier.

SOMEWHAT useless. Think about it. The game GT5 is meant not to be a semi-simulation like its predecessors GT1, 2 or 3, but a full-on hardcore sim, which it kind of fails to do anyway. So, logically, what's the point of a supposedly hardcore driving simulator when it looks and sounds like the real thing but doesn't FEEL control-wise like the real thing without a steering wheel?. Also, supposedly, according to some, playing GT5 with a steering wheel is easier and more fun than a controller, realism aside, anyway. :sly:

True, I have a wheel and it truly did change everything. Only thing is that the learning curve is too harsh (well for drifting anyways).

Some wheels aren't that expensive anyway. A used DFGT will cost you about the price of a new game, which isn't very much to be honest. Older Logitech wheels would cost about $20-$40 on eBay and they still work great for GT5 even with the 200 degree steering. I never went back to using DS3 when playing racing games after I got my wheel.

DFGT is good but the G27 is worth every extra penny. Because it allows you to engine brake/clutch/ shifter whwbever you want/shut your car completely off ect.

I use both wheel and controller.

GT5 is awesome.

(Drops microphone and walks off stage)

A G27 would cost around $200 though. That's about the same price my PS3. If you can afford one, then why not? I wish I could though :D

Looks like GT5 is suffering from wheel users.That "incident" with Logitech was a big mistake.Won't by a DFGT(pedals),wont by a T500RS(price),G27 has "problems".So,back to DS3.-SAD :(

What problems?

On topic, how is this game "useless" without a wheel? It's a game! Is there any games out there that are, useful? This game can be fun for anyone, wheel users or pad users, it's all about what people can afford/have space for!

On a side note, you want ultimate realism, get a car!

Edit: I'm on a wheel but enjoyed the heck outta GT3+4 with a pad.

The only real way people can play GT5 is using either a Guitar Hero guitar or drum kit. Wheels and controllers suck.

Useless is a tough statement.

I'd say it is different from a driving point of view and much more enjoyable for sure but useless?

1. Photo Travel - DS3
2. B-SPEC - DS3
3. Car collection - DS3
4. Museum cards - DS3
5. Course maker - DS3
6. Tuning options - DS3

I still have a G25 in need of repair. Can I do it?

Yes - if I had the money and the time. That's the issue here - some of us don't have time to get/fix a wheel, whether it be for monetary or time issues (or both.)

How can you say playing the game without a steering wheel is useless, though? It's not like it's real life, where you should always get the best available to you (which isn't something I see a lot anymore).

2,3,4,5 and 6 without a difference.

Agreed. It might not better for driving but works great for everything else

OP, That's kind of an elitist attitude don't you think? I have a wheel but only used it for a few days and went back to controller. just didn't like it.

I've been playing all of the Gran Turismos since the original with the regular console controller. I'm A-Spec Lv40/B-Spec Lv40. DS3 works just fine for me.

I have gotten curious about getting a wheel lately though.

You won't regret it. Me just going from a DFGT to a G27 made the game brand new again. The clutch and H-Pattern shifter (along with all the abilities that come with having a wheel with a clutch that you can't get without one) made that happen.

Just point out driving a 750hp Chevy Silverado around Spa on RH tyres with a pad tonight was great fun, because you can make quick subtle adjustments with ease. Use a pad to the full extent of its abilities and GT5 is far from useless.

In fact, Maybe if OP plays around with the button configurations and sensitivity options he might change his mind.

Useless????

So full of BS right here.I play games spartan style,no wheels,no special chairs and I even play with an SD TV,I don't need a fraggin wheel to prove that I'm a good driver.I'm good enough already....

I can't afford one where I live and all the wheels here suck too but I don't need another BS appliance on my PS3 that clutters in my living room when I have the controller I grew up,smashed, cursed T.Vs (MC II I'm looking at you) and learned how to play GT with.I prove to be able to hold my own with a DS3 just fine,no assists, steering sensitivity on +3 and only ABS on 1 because I'm starting to learn how to drive with ABS off on DS3.

I feel that the wheels are more useless than the DS3 in this case.

Haters gonna Hate.

The DS3 is far more versatile than the Wheel.

If you want to have a real simulation grab your nearest car and take it to a track.GT5 is a video game, get over it.

I enjoyed GT5 with the controller for 3 years. Then I switched to the wheel and I'll probably enjoy it for another 3 years or until GT6 is released, so ye probably another 3 years ha ha.
