I have a few questions relating to how people normally 'build' their 4x4s in game. This is just so I know if I am actually doing it correctly really.

I think it just breaks down into Suspension, Transmission, and Turbos. As engine and break upgrades to level 4 seem to be a given really.

Suspension, I only normally change this when I'm dealing with something like the Mesa, Sandking or Rebel which already have good ground clearance, and changing the suspension seems to really help when it come to road handling and them not just tipping over.

Trasmissions, I am somewhat unsure about on a lot of these vehicles and normally just end up sticking with level 3 so I don't end up with a car that can't climb because it can't stay in gear long enough.

Turbo, I just generally stay away from because my expectation is that on any steep inclines I'll end up just spinning the wheels and then rolling straight back down. Are there any specific expections to this? I have been tempted to add one to the Sandking, which is supposidly already turbocharged since it is a diesel engine.

My SK has turbo, doesn't seem to be spinning wildly. My other character has a MW Mesa with turbo, same story. I like turbo.

I think it comes down to personal preference. Several crew members tune their rigs in the way you described and for the same reasons, they seem to do quite well with them. I've maximum tuned every one of my 4x4's and have no complaints. I think slightly different driving technique makes up for the difference in tuning, making either method quite effective.

You can change your crew in-game in the options menu, under "crews" 👍

No worries, and welcome to the crew. Most days you can find several members ready for some wheelin' just by checking in here. Our scheduled meets are usually Sunday afternoons (EST).

For anyone else interested in joining, I only ask for social club names because by the time I started maintaining the crew requests, there was already a huge backlog. I don't dare accept all of them for fear that the crew would be full and half the members wouldn't be active. Leaving your social club name is the quickest way to get in the club.

Oh, I love GTA online, I really love it. 45 minutes I'm trying to join soloaded, and actually passed between joining session errors, joining empty lobbies, receiving invites while I was roaming somewhere in the clouds, joining a random session, accepting the invite and finding the player is no longer there, failed to connect errors and so on. Really nice, rockstar!

So I finally am able to apply turbo to my 4x4s, and upgraded my Rebel. Tried it on "my" Paleto X10 race, took me much higher than where I could ever get with the SK (turbo) and MW Mesa (turbo). I mean, with any of them I can get to the top, but not exactly following the zip lines of the cable car. At some point, I always have to find a lateral way. Rebel turbo passed that point and almost did it!

So unfortunate I could join soloaded, I was very curious to compare it directly with the SK..

EDIT: I must add that the Rebel also got the aero baja bed mod, which eliminates the fenders, leaving the wheels uncovered. This also really helps.

I should probably do some testing on that trail then, because from what you've just said that could mean my thoughts on turbos being bad for climbs on this game could be completely wrong.

I like the Rebel as an off-roader, I just hate the look of the rusty version, but unless Rockstar listen to the community about removing the clean Rebel, I might have to just add the rusty version to my garage.

Do you have any ideas as to how many crew members on Xbox 360 are 'active'? I've sent messages to a few of them who have been online since I joined and I don't even get a reply from most of them. I did include the fact that I am in the LS 4x4 crew.

I also told a friend of mine who enjoys off-roading (His Rebel is in the picture I posted yesterday) to send a join request. His Socialclubs name is 'conks91'.

That's a good idea. It would definitely help to know who is active on a regular basis. Especially for Xbox users

I definitively like turbo. And I agree on the clean rebel, still I think the rusty one fits perfectly the baja rally style mods, so I own and like it modified that way. If possible, I'd have a standard clean one and a rusty baja.

While the rebel being better than the SK and MW Mesa: I think the SK still is stronger, has more clearance and big tires to pass bigger obstacles, but the dimensions penalize it in some narrow passages, that's where the rebel could go on and the SK stops. Rebel is 30/70 so has good traction on all 4 wheels. While the Mesa, being 10/90, it's smaller than the SK but still wider than the rebel and not very good traction on front wheels.. I love the three a lot, but think the tweaked Rebel is the overall winner for me now.

Also.. I think I'm adding a SUV on my garage as a jolly vehicle that can be fast on the road, effective off-road, good cover for missions. I'm undecided between: Dubsta, Rocoto, Baller I and II, Granger. I also love the Beejay, let's put it in. Suggestions? I mean off-road wise..

I have looked into all but the Rocoto in that list, but I would suggest the Dubsta over any of the others. The Granger is a little long and lacks ground clearance, and the Baller I and II both lack any real modifications.

I would suggest that you take a look at the Dubsta, it has a great 4WD system which is pretty much an equal split, you also have all the really nice modifications you can add to it.

The BeeJay is very similar in terms of performance, but has better overall ground clearance.

If you test the Dubsta against a wall the front wheels will actually spin first. Not sure the significance, but interesting. I've put some miles on the Rocato. It gets awesome traction everywhere and it's pretty quick. Horrible ground clearance and no customization. Performance wise it reminds me of the Sultan. The others mentioned are all capable, but the Dubsta is defiantly the best performer off road. I recommend leaving the rear bumper off of it though, tends to contact the ground a lot during inclines.

Oh yea, that tire on the hood makes it difficult for others to shoot you from the front while driving around in free roam. 👍

Yeah, I love the Dubsta and it's surely the best offroader of that bunch. I used to own one, had put all the mods in as the one pictured. Love it that way too, but then prefer the looks of the rebel or the Mesa. Now it would keep it vanilla, total black. Dubsta should have 60/40 wheel power, according to the handling file. I test them with the handbrake, and front wheels spin more than the rear ones. But all the SUVs have 60/40 actually, except the Mesa.

And the Rocoto, it's not rated as the fastest SUV, actually even less than the Dubsta as a racer



but my perception is different, and same as Mudd, it seems to me really fast. That's why it tempts me.

So I'm really undecided between the two. May end up with the oddball Beejay then, LOL.

Personally I think the Patriot might have had it's spot taken as one of the best off-roaders in the game by the new and improved Sandking. With it's plush suspension and proper 4WD system, it's actually a bit broken for hardcore custom off-road tracks. I have never bothered with the Sandking beforehand, but now I have a beautiful Sandking SWB parked in my garage, eagerly awaiting my every return to grab it and hit the trails.
