For view I prefer what the game refers to as hood view, as it lets me see the edges of the car, while still making me feel part of it and having an unobstructed view of the racing line. I can't help with controller configuration, because I've only ever used the layout you were using before.
 
When I use a controller, I use L2/R2 for brake/accelerate and X for up shift, square for down. Triangle is my e-brake, but I never use it anyway. As far as something that makes transition to a wheel easier, I don't think it matters. The inputs are all natural and obvious on a wheel so it doesn't really take any time to adjust to the layout, you just need to get used to the feel.

My preferred view is bumper cam, just for the clear view of the track. I've tried the hood cam and it's nice to be able to see the car, but I'm so used to bumper that I don't think it's worth getting used to. If you're switching though, I think either choice is fine, just personal preference.
 
Been using the ds3 since GT2. I use X for throttle, O for brakes, L2 and R2 for gears. Most people think that L2 and R2 (or even the right stick) are better for throttle and brakes because of the increased control. Could never get used to that. I'm able to press X halfways to control acceleration but that is it. All or half. But that setup is so natural for me that I preffer to loose some time to make the experience enjoyable. Not to mention its gentler on my rheuma issues.
Regarding camera, I almost always use bumper cam. On particularly beautiful cars, and only when driving for the fun of it, cockpit cam. With all the other cameras I tend to do everything too late...
 
My CSR Elite brakes are starting to wear out sadly, I'm not sure if it's the foam insert or the load cell so I've bought a couple replacements of each.

It's weird, it's like I have to push the brake in further before it starts to recognize the input. I'm tired of missing apexes :lol:

Whenever I use my DS3, I use L2/R2 for throttle and brake, □ to gear up, ○ to gear down, X as handbrake and R3 to activate the R/A menu which is operated via the d-pad. :)
 
@roamer2629 : You mention rheuma issues, this is why I'm keen to hear what set up is best ergonomically. I've been using D-Pad for steering and X for accelerate and consequently my thumbs ache after about an hour. And I see what you mean about doing things too late...I used bumper this week in the dirt and when I went back to chase I was doing things too late.

@Cats_PJs : Regarding transition to a wheel, if I end up getting one that doesn't have paddle shifts, what direction is the tiptronic gear movement, does up/forward equate to changing up or is it reversed?

@Barra333 : I like the idea of using the Left Analogue, it seems to work okay for changing gears but I'm just not sure which direction I should be flicking it to go up/down through gears because as @Dean pointed out, he appears to use the opposite gear change method to you and Cats_PJs?!?

I suppose in the end there is going to be heaps of personal preference but I figure I might as well put good thought into it now before actually committing to a major change 👍

My rheuma is a byproduct of having psoriasis since I was 16. I'm turning 40 this year and, sadly, the years have taken its toll. The only advice I could give you is switching the D-pad for the left stick, but I guess that would not be easy to get used to. I'm just guessing but I think the sideways movement of the stick would be gentler on your bones than pressing down the buttons. When I really get into it I always apply more force than necessary, and if that is the case with you too, going too hard on those plastic little buttons might hurt you more than the stick.
I would also suggest using Arnica oil for those aching joints. For those not familiar with it, it's a natural oil derived from a plant used in homeopathy and antroposophy, it works wonders and has no side affects as most remedies do.
Last but not least, take a break as soon as the pain sets in. This is only a game, even if most of us (including me of course) tend to take it way too seriously, and its supposed to be fun, not painful...

I stopped using chase cam when GT5 came along and use the interior view or bumper cam but always bumper cam for fast laps.

I recently switched to a wheel and prior to that used a similar set-up to Baron @Cats_PJs These are from memory but I think they are correct

L2/R2 Brake/Accel
L1/R1 Change view/Toggle Lights
Triangle= Reverse
Square = Hand-brake
Circle= Change up
Cross = Change down
Left stick = steering
Right stick = Accel/Brake (i used it when I got lazy and switch to auto change)
R3= RA menu activate
L3 = Nitro
DPAD Up RA function select +
DPAD Down RA function select -
DPAD Left RA function adjust -
DPAD Right RA function adjust +
Select = Show/Hide ghost
Start=pause

The mapping allows you to use levers for the vast majority of control thereby reducing aches after prolonged use and the button mapping I found was the most natural placement for the most often used items.

We typically have to work around, or integrate, GT Academy into our rotation of combos. Seeing it coming as soon as Monday was as much a surprise to us as it was to you. :boggled:

Bring on a new track, please. :)
 
Well this week I've used bumper cam only and the new controller set up is working nicely, my hands don't hurt a bit. It's interesting looking at data logger and seeing a nice ease into full acceleration instead of the old on/off graph :sly:👍

OK, while we wait for Brando...I need to head to bed so I can wake up and feel refreshed for the inevitable overload (positive or negative) that follows the maintenance that starts in a few hours.

I'm not sure whether this update (if there is one) will have much substance, but I'm guessing something interesting will be happening soon. :)

After reading Phil and Kevin's threads about their involvement with the racing scene, I got the bright idea to make a post about what I do.. it's not exciting as racing, but it involves automobiles and a lot of people have never seen the inside if a semi truck.

I start my day by going to a dirt drop yard in London KY where I pick up a trailer loaded with different parts. Anything from transfer cases down to little plastic knobs. Anything that can go into the interior of a vehicle can be on the trailer. When I hook up my trailer I have to do what is known as a pre-trip inspection (or PTI in our log books.) I check to make sure no bolts are lose, none of the lines are leaking, all the lights work and the tires are aired to the correct psi.

After everything is good to go, I head south bound hammer down (aka south on the interstate :D) and make my way over the mountains in southern Kentucky and nothern Tennessee. Its about 90 miles until I reach the first mess of a city, which is Knoxville TN. Then, another 75 or so to Chattanooga TN. From there I dip down through a little piece of Georgia for 23 miles then into Alabama. From the state line to my exit is 61 miles, then another 33 miles over to the Honda plant that builds the Honda Pilot and some Acura SUV.

Once I'm at the Honda plant, I take my trailer to drop off at either the Honda or Acura assembly lines and then pick up a trailer filled with empty steel racks that will be going to Ohio. Now all that's left, is the drive back way i just came from ..

Exciting eh? Round trip is 671 miles and takes about 12 hours after I stop for fuel, a mandatory 30 minute break and the "drop and hook" of the trailers. Man, is it boring.. anyway, here's some in cab pictures for you..

All these gauges that i never look at.. from left to right, top to bottom: Manifold Pressure, Transmission Temperature, Exhaust build up, Engine Oil Pressure, Coolant Temperature, RPM Gauge that's x100 instead of x1000 and the little fuel level gauge is my Diesel Exhaust Fluid level.

Speedometer, Fuel Gauge, Tractor air pressure, trailer air pressure, Air App Pressure (the amount of air pressure it's pushing through the lines when i press the brake pedal), Engine Oil Temperature, and bottom right is the Air Suspension Pressure, which is how much air the truck is using to keep airbags filled, which means it raises my truck frame where the trailer connects at.

Now for the Neon blue lights.. first one is my windshield wipers, then a button that burns the excess build up in the exhaust, mirror heat, engine brake (like when you let off the accelerator on a car.. but a lot stronger.. it uses the compression of the engine to slow the rotation of the drive tires), next row is my cruise control on/off, set the speed, slow down the set speed, then some button for the mud/snow, door locks, passenger mirror up/down is last..

Lastly, the differential power divider (4 wheel drive), button to slide my fifth wheel front or back, dump the air bags thats lifting the frame up where the trailer connects, no idea what the battery looking button nor the last one does.. :embarrassed:

And that'd be it.. just like a real car huh :D it's actually extremely easy to drive .. just have to watch out when turning.. hope y'all didn't get to bored reading that .. can't be no more boring than the actual drive ;)
 
I thought that first icon on the left in the last picture was for "race car mode" :dopey: (it looks like an F1 car from the 50s).

Do you sometimes pick up good looking hitch-hikers to relieve the monotony? ;)

LoL no.. I've picked up one hitch hiker in the 9 years i've been driving. It was some young guy going from LA to Las Vegas. Hes buried out in the desert.. :P seriously though, I've got some hilarious stories that involve prostitutes.

Actually, here's one. Not sure of any of them are gtp safe...

My neighbor was working for a company that i had just started with, so they picked him for me to ride with for 2 weeks to learn how the company did paperwork and stuff .. we were headed to Florida and stopped at the truck stop on the south west side of the atlanta loop. We filled out our log books and got our wallets.. my buddy slings his door open and it makes a loud smacking noise and he says, oh my god, I'm sorry, i didn't see you standing there. He had just busted this Latino girl in the face with the door. That lady said, its okay, i came from behind your truck.. are either of you boys looking for some company? He said no, but i'll give you a dollar to see your boobs. That girl leans in the truck and pulls her shirt up.. he reaches in the cup holder and gives her 50 cents.. she said i thought you were gonna give me a dollar!? He says, i was but them boobs ain't worth nothin but a quarter a piece. I busted out laughing and she cussed him after she took the 50 cents lol

Didn't feel this would go well in a GT Academy thread, just because... how close to death would I be able to beat someone before it'd be enough to disqualify me from the aforementioned competition (only half joking, some bastard stole my bank card and £10+ from my mother's jacket while she was out, and I'm only just calm enough to be jocular about it... one dent in a solid-ish wall later). Assault or ABH? :lol:

So!!! I just hit Round 4 again and finally snuck under the Gold time. I then jumped out and set the sensitivity to +7 and within the next 15 minutes took my time from 2'20.8xx to 2'19.8xx. So it looks like controller sensitivity could indeed by something I should spend more time with. The marquee text when you hover over it says:
Adjust the movement speed and sensitivity of the front wheels in response to steering input from the directional buttons or left/right stick. A smaller value will result in slower movement and smoother steering control. A larger value will result in quicker and more responsive steering. Adjusting this value will allow you to find a level of sensitivity that fits your playing style.
I'm just wondering exactly what that means? Is there a chance I'm over-turning the wheels with a super-positive setting or is it just how quickly the tyres respond to my thumb movement and make their way to the angle I'm trying to get to? Is it worth sticking with +7 all the time? I know @CRANK_U1 once said he uses +7...I'm curious to know what other butt-kicking DS3'ers are doing with sensitivity?
...I know its frustrating on slippery weeks with a ds3, but if you take the time to learn what techniques work for you, you'll be greatly rewarded...
The only thing that works for me so far is TC=7...it feels perfect to keep oversteer under control but I know TC is almost always a detriment to fast lap times. I guess I'll keep experimenting.
