Does anyone know what the red number on the tachometer means. I'm refering to the numbers that appear when you reach redline on the final gear. The have a + sign in front of them.

Er... actually they have nothing to do with the red line or the final gear. They are just an indication of the gear you should use for the next corner.
When you're flat-out in 6th gear and you see a small red +2 below, it means you should consider 1) jumping on your brakes ; or 2) press start button to restart your race. :D

As said above, the number is the suggested gear for the upcoming turn. Also, that number begins flashing at the suggested braking point.

Welcome to GTPlanet, "4eva".

I never knew if flashed at breaking point?
Which certainly means you're braking too early.
I didn't pay attention to the flashing either, but I know I'm a slow driver.

I never pay attention to it, I usually brake later than wen it flashes and on some corners I can go faster in a different gear to the recommended one, but if you stick to the braking point and gear given you can't go far wrong if your new to the game or if you'r in need of a little practice. And welcome to GTP.

Only the game, some cars have a light to tell you to change gear but not braking points, it's only there as a guide to help new comers to the series.

In real life, they have those distance markers to tell you when to brake. But, you have to figure out which one to brake at....so....the little flashing red number can help. However, I find that it's way too early on the really fast cars, especially the Le Mans cars. But, the suggested gear is usually correct, there are just a few corners here and there where you can go faster or need to go slower.

The markers are in GT3 as well, not one every track but look out for them at Laguna Seca.

It is only a suggestion, and you're right, for the LM cars or for the F1s you can postpone your braking a little.

But nearly every new racer, in the game and in real life, tends to brake too late. 80% of the handling problems people complain about here are the result of overcooking the corners, so the brake point suggested by the flashing number is a good place to start.

Good braking is so important. Changing my bad braking habits improved my game immensely. I'm still not as good as I know I could be...

Cheers,

I think I liked it better in GTs 1 and 2 where you had to learn the braking points the hard way. GT3 pampers the player too much sometimes.

Never knew such a thing existed. . . The whole time I thought I took too much LSD in my teenage years . . .
