High School

I am in my last year of high school and just 3 more months until graduation. Its not so good right now. I have 3 A's but also a C and a D. Only have 5 periods instead of 6 this year since I have enough credits to have a free period. But yeah those 2 grades are what I am concerned right now.

Also I got laid off from my job at Carls Jr, which I am pretty bummed but at the same time, I can spend my senior year much better now.

I wish I could get a job. Not to many up here though... Plus I have Football, which cuts into any hours I may be able to get.

I still have a year left. I'm actually putting in a bit of effort this year though which is good. The past 2 years I said blah I don't really give a **** about this and had percentages below the 30s in some classes. I even skipped exams a few times. But I'm making a concious effort to change.

I hate my semester.... I'm getting high marks in my hard courses and low marks in my easy courses.... why?

I've gotten 90s in Tech, French and Music, but then I just got 3 quizzes back and they're all in the low 70's high 60's! I got a 94 in math last year... and its all because of stupid mistakes.... I was sooo frustrated with myself..

There's a girl at school I like but I'm trapped in the horrid "friend zone"!

Same... Well I was there with one girl, then she started going out with my best friend, which is a bit awkward sometimes, and now I'm in that situation with another one.. It's often not a good position to be in :nervous:

I've been out of high school for 7 years. Looking back, the whole experience was overrated. Adolescence is a horrible time to be forced into contact with so many similar people.

I'm glad to see it put that way because I feel like I'm missing out not having a lot of real friends. I hate feeling forced to have friends and to be socially accepted and stuff like that.

You'll be amazed at who you end up connecting with (or disconnecting from) once you graduate. I haven't seen my high school "best friend" in 3 years and now the only people who I associate with who were at the same high school as me weren't even my friends back then. It's all a part of growing up.

The best advice is to just make the most of your time and do you best to get good grades. Figure out what you want to do for a career as soon as possible and set goals for yourself in that regard. That will help you infinitely once you are out of high school.

Right now I should be reading 146 pages of a book for english that will will discuss tomorrow, so I just decided to use SparkNotes. Still do not feel like reading. I got about halfway, but I'm done for the night. Anyway, high school is killing me right now. I'm having trouble with what's happening to a lot of my friends. One is still just a pothead, and hasn't played with pills like he said he wouldn't. The pothead part annoys me, but at least there's nothing worse involved. That can't be said for a few of my other friends. Good friends, they were. Now, one takes painkillers every morning and got kicked out of his house at 16 and is living with another old friend of mine who loves pills, and the other just flipped out, having depression and problems like that his whole life which were just brought out more by drinking and taking pills, ended up cutting his hand open purposely with a razor, and going to the hospital to sign himself into a mental hospital for 4 days. He's out now, and I was talking with him about it. He said he's really done, at least he'll try. I just can't accept it. I either hate all the other kids or just don't share any interests, so I can't make many other friends. I have a couple friends who are still normal, and a girlfriend. The problem is the girlfriend has depression and it kills me to see it, and my friends are going through what I am, due to our mutual friends. High school just changes people way too much. I can't stand this.

rb26x - Honestly dude, you should just remove yourself from those guys if you can. You need to objectively look at who you are spending time with and ask yourself what you truly gain from those associations. It is not your burden to "rescue" anyone and you aren't even qualified to do so if you ever tried. If I were you, I'd try to make friends with people who are able to enrich your life in one way or another.

Damn I'm sick of school. I would honestly love to just drop out and work with my dad for the rest of my life. I can't stand sitting for 1 hour 40 minutes 'learning' about crap I'll never really use while I could e at work making money and doing something I actually like doing. I'd rather push a broom for 12 hours at my dads for $60 a day than go in to school for 6 hours every day. Half the crap we need to take anyways isn't even important, please is there anybody on this site who could say they ever use algebra at all? That's a completely useless thing to learn in my eyes.

Algebra is really just a numbered version of critical thinking and logic. I use those skills all the time.

I graduated back in 2000.I just thought i would share the only thing that kept me going to school.I guess you could say it was the best part of being there.

I was part of the High School band.Played the Snare Drum all 4 years and during concert season i played everything else percussion related. You could ask me something that happened in class or something that happened in the hallway, but i wouldn't remember it that well. You could ask me something about the High School Band and i can tell you pretty much what happened each day to great detail.Being in the band was the best experience i've had in my life so far(and i'm nearly 30).I made a lot of friends, annoyed the band director(that's what the percussion is for) and had blast going to different schools to play the half time shows at football games.

Now that i'm older and look back at it,I'm glad that I was a part of it.I do miss it quite a bit though.

When do you use it? I can understand if it's for a job but I know for sure I'm not taking a job that has anything to do with math. I think that they should be teaching more important things in school that you'll definitely need to know. High school is a bit better with this yet it's still very restricted. For a job related to working on cars all I can do is go to Tech yet I'm not to keen on the whole idea of going there.

You're missing the point. Your algebra class is not really about knowing 1+1. It's about knowing how to get there by using logic and critical thinking.

I think that they should be teaching more important things in school that you'll definitely need to know.

Like what? What do you think you need to know?

It's good thing I know a bit of Math for where I work.

I know I just work for a Grocery Store(13 years now) and I'm a Stocker,Reset Manager,and a Scanning Coordinator.

With Stocking you know it's a no brainer, but then you get to the bills.I use a lot of Math to figure out losses(damaged goods) and items i've been shorted.Even though you write down the item number for the product you still have to figure in the amount of money from losses and shortages and write it on the bills. If you don't do this the warehouse won't give you the correct amount of credit due to them being lazy.I know this from experience.

Resets aren't to big on this, but occasionally you get some in that look like they just threw some numbers at it and said "yeah this will work".These are the ones you have to go in dissect the the set and shelves and then go on to write down the right numbers for allocating the items.

Scanning Coordnating is always using math.A lot of times they don't send down the correct deals on items.(Items that go on sale)So you go in the computer figure out the correct amount that is meant to be saved, then go through a big long sheet of codes and then put it in the computer.

This also happens with Vendor items as well, but it's a bit different. There could be a price difference. If it's one item then it's no problem, you go in figure out the difference, then look at the Vendor book then change it to the correct price. If it's a bunch of items wrong then it gets a bit hectic.Since our prices have to match we have to make sure each price is correct and we also need the correct amount of items. It can be a bit mind numbing at times.

Even though this is just your basic kind of math I use it everyday being in the Grocery business.

Ahhh. The discussion of the decade. Our school system. What to teach and how to teach it.

Ima go grab some popcorn real quick.

This is some ****. My 3rd period teacher Denies me for going off Campus during School hours for MOCK TRIAL, an ACADEMIC Club. Because I am missing a SINGLE homework assignment worth 10 points. The best part? I dont need to leave Campus till 5th period. But yet she can still decline it? Garbage.

Also- Was sent to the Office today.
Admin: "Mr. West, take your hood off"
Me: "Why?"

(The no hoods or hats rule at my school is quite frankly really stupid)

A:"Because it's a rule"
M:"Because it's a Rule?"
A:"Yes. It denotes Gang affiliation"

(Gang Affiliation? You handed me an Academic award last month. And a citizenship one the month before)

M:"And it's attached to a Stanford University Sweatshirt? Those guys are quite the thugs."
A:"Take it off"
M:"No. It's cold in the hallway"

Bam. Office.
"Ryan? Up here? Why?"
"I'm a gang member, apparently."
"...Just go back to class. I don't want to have this discussion today"

I got kicked out of class for opening a snickers bar. Put it away. I proceeded to take a giant bite and chew obnoxiously loud. At this point the class was rolling. She said do you want to leave? Kinda but if you want me out so bad call for an escort. She got on the phone and I lol'd. Igot up, mumbled a few naughty words just loud enough so everyone could hear. WHAT DID YOU SAY??? Oh, you heard me. Walked out.I got down there and got snobby with the principle and then got kicked out the offices. All for opening a candy bar.

My second year of high school (grade 9)

Grade 8 was very hard, and very boring. Lots of homework, all of it boring. Grade 9? Way easier. I get no homework, just the occasional project every month or so. I don't understand why grade 8 is so much harder then grade 9.

I'm also getting better marks this year. Mainly B's last year, now I'm getting all A's, I think. Not getting report cards due to teacher strike means I don't know my marks for sure.

Yeah, the BC system is messed up. You get your confidence up in grade 9 then bam! You're all the way into grade 11 with crap marks.

Oh, and what school do you go to that starts in grade 8?

Last year of high school fer me, looks like i wont be walking the stage at graduation though because someone borrowed a library book in my name and never returned it ><

At least you get to wear some clothing of personal preference. We have a uniform with a tie. We have to tuck it in and you have to wear another shirt under it because in the rain they just go see through. So in the summer when it gets very humid we just burn and can't concentrate. Sort of silly really. I got disrespectfully told to tuck in by a teacher in the morning. The way they treated the situation helped me conclude this.

Almost all Principals, deputy principals or teachers with suits only got the job because A) They couldn't get into Politics, and this is the next best thing, and B will tell you why. B) They love to feel as if they have power over people, so they work in a school where they can try and boss children around and punish if they don't agree with them.

So in the end, they are only in the job to feel as if they have control of people. Now that's pathetic!

Pssh, my school's literally a 7 minute walk from the city prison. Best that :sly:

The funny thing is that I am about the same distance from the Prison.

Thankfully my principles pretty cool. He stole gum (which we aren't supposed to have) out of my friends backpack at lunch and put it right next to him. Then (He likes the Texas Longhorns) he was taunting my friend about his OU hoody.

My band teachers a 🤬 though. He made my girlfriend cry once because she played one note wrong. Him, and many other teachers, think he's the supreme ruler here. They give us no room to argue, and if you do, your straight to the office. The other day me and my friends were getting our bikes to leave, and a teacher comes over and gives us all a lunch detention. She said we were throwing stuff and all that and we were just talking. Thankfully she didn't see me though! The one time being un-noticed works!

I could be wrong, maybe I would need to know it but or what I want to get into it's pretty useless. I don't think it should be a necessity to take it. As for what I think we should be taught that's a good question. I'd say basic things we'll be doing for the rest of our lives that we'll definitely need to know. More courses with things to do wit managing money and the like. I have no idea what balancing a checkbook even means, I think things like that should be at least explained.

It may seem it to you, but I'm looking to get into mechanical engineering. This certainly requires math courses. The thing is they teach a broad curriculum to fit different people as a whole so that courses don't need to be super-specific to each person and their career choice, if they chose already. I don't ever want anything to do with English, Spanish, History, and a lot of other classes I'm taking. But the thing is you must take them because the education in high school is to prepare you for any branch of careers, and it will be narrowed down when you decide what you do after high school, whether it be college, a technical school, or straight to work. In my school, one needs a technology credit to graduate, and for some reason I never got one, even though I scheduled for one last year and this year. I signed up for CAD, which is essential for engineering, and I can't get it because it's given to all seniors. That means I must take another elective that counts as a technology credit, all of which I care nothing about. But I found one that you would like as I saw your argument farther down the thread: Personal Finance. Look at different electives, there are probably very few that fit what you're looking for, but there will most likely be something. I found a class about rock n' roll, baking (only because I get to eat what I make), and Latin which is great for SATs, as Latin teaches you prefix, suffix, and roots and their meanings.

I talk to them less, and rarely ever hang out. I'm pulling away, but I still miss them for who they were. Were is the keyword, but it still bothers me a little. My friend who went into the mental hospital for a few days wants to hang out with a good friend of his (and mine) and I to keep him from doing stupid things again, so that will be good. I can't really make friends to hang out with outside of school, though. I like BMX and longboarding, which nobody likes except a few of my friends who turned into losers. The only other thing I like is cars, which I have one friend to talk about with similar tastes, and he lives 20 minutes away, and my parents don't even want to drive me to my girlfriend's, let alone his house. I also like playing guitar, but with school work and nobody to play with anymore, I lost interest, and only play once every two or three weeks. I have an old elementary friend that I have been talking to more lately, and he wants to play some UFO and Rush with me, which I love, but he's always grounded and we can't ever get together. Things will work out eventually I guess.

You sound like a joy to teach. It's not "just for opening a candy bar", that you got in trouble. It's because you acted like a spoiled little 🤬 The teacher asked you to put the candy bar away, I don't see how that's such a ridiculous request.

There isn't any reason to really bother with balancing check books these days. I write 15 checks a year on average, and it is for rent and some government related expenses.

What do you want to get into, because basic Algebra is pretty useful in just about anything anything, including artistic fields. Also typically recommended for going to college and getting a degree if you plan on that. Not to mention solving stuff like 2x - 32 = 7.25 is incredibly simple and all that basic algebra is.

If you think that really has anything to do with the candy bar, I feel sorry for you. Gonna have a hell of a time in the real world.
