Fuzz, not really....

"See kid's. This is why you need to go out side and play, and get some real friends too" :sly:

Pretty stupid to do it on Christmas Day, would be hard being a parent trying to explain to your kid that they cant use their new console because of some morons.

Update: Xbox Live Is up N Running. My son is playing 2k15 right now. So, it seems only PSN is not working at the moment. Keep in mind.... Sony has been hit the hardest this month alone.

Something to note, a majority of these attacks appear to be coming from outside North America, notably China. Should this actually be the case, then there isn't much our law enforcement can do.
EDIT: Lizard Squad also claimed responsibility for taking out North Korea's entire internet, so I highly doubt North Korea's hired them.

I'm not sure that PSN being down is where parenting difficulties end. Or even start for that matter...

Also you can always play offline. ;)

Personally I despise server hackers, but at least some "Anti-Hacker" groups (like Finest Squad) actually make an effort to slow or stop the bad hackers (like Lizard Squad). Though some claims of the PS3 users on the PSN are back online, hopefully things will return back to normal for everyone by midnight.

We ware watching Netflix all afternoon and early evening, I had the "you have been disconnect from playstation network" message or whatever it reads once when I first went on, no trouble since. Do you need to be logged into psn with Netflix ? I never really paid attention to that.

Yup.

Of all times they had to do this and it was on Christmas.

They'll probably try to take down Steam as well like they did before.

I still haven't gotten my PS4 connected. I wonder if living close to a city accounts for that.

Some people don't seem to understand the way DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks work. A simple analogy is an Highway. In normal cases, its a quick way to get traffic from place A to B. Now it's 7a.m. rush hour and the highway is packed and traffic gets clogged and traffic slows to (near) halt. A DDOS attack is basically some person or group placing thousands of faux cars on the highway, preventing traffic flow (to and from servers). A company can not do anything against this. They have no control over how much data can be sent to and from their servers. If the servers get magnitudes more requests than the servers can process, network operations break down. These network shutdowns can not be circumvented by security systems, so blaming the owning companies is wrong in such cases. Security breaches are a different story and different method of "hacking".

To extend on your analogy, the only action you can do against this is add more lanes to the highway (increase bandwidth). This is time consuming and expensive.

Well given the amount of computers in the world, and the scary statistics on infection rate, botnets can easily overcome the extra lanes with "more cars".

The worst part of it is that Sony actually has HUGE amount of servers, they are maintaining the service for more than 100 million persons according to the sales between PS3 and PS4. Yes, they're not always connected at the same time, and there are plenty of accounts per person in some cases, but still.
What I can not believe at the very end is the purpose of this things... really. What's the point?

They want to eliminate Console gaming, so everyone has to go to either Steam, or Wii. (Since latest reports have Wii services good) Xbox and PSN are both down at this time yet.

I will never go to Steam or Wii !

Apparently Microsoft Xbox servers are affected as well as Sony's. Reportedly, extortion was the point, as it's said the attacks will stop once Sony and Microsoft do certain things.

Did those guys really hosted a DDOS bot on OVH servers located most probably in France ? Hey Lizards, I have something for you !

Goddamnit, wanted to get to level 20 on the crew today but that aint happenin'. I'll just play race 07 til this blows over. All over a bloody movie ffs. The problem with online gaming.

Sony, which was impacted by both the PlayStation hack and the diversion of Smedley's plane, told Game Zone in a statement that the FBI is handling the case.

List of things to jail Lizard Squad for.

1. Hacking.

2. Terrorism.

3. Aiding the enemy (North Korea)

4. DDoS.
They took out North Korea's whole internet system for several hours. They aren't helping them. They also aren't hacking as several people have already explained. They've been stalling out servers with false connections, and DDoS isn't illegal, just immoral and frustrating. The only criminal thing you could charge for was the bomb threat.

I'm not sure why but I was able to complete the rest of the Seasonals during the downtime because Seasonals don't require constant internet connection like online lobbies or Quick Match. I was able to earn back 40mio with 200% login bonus. I think I'll just stick to offline games for the time being. I can wait, we had this issue before.

Incorrect:

The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (the “CFAA”) prohibits a person from “knowingly caus[ing] the transmission of a program, information code, or command, and as a result of such conduct, intentionally causes damages without authorization to a protected computer” (see 18 U.S.C. § 1030(a)(5)(A)). While broadly worded, DDoS can be classified as transmission of a “program, information code, or command”. Damage is defined as “any impairment to the integrity or availability of data, a program, a system, or information” under 18 U.S.C. § 1030(e)(8).

Under the guidelines of the law, those found guilty can face up to 20 years in prison. The law stipulates different sentencing structures, each depending on the severity of the attack as well as the intended target. Attacks against government websites and financial institutions face the harshest penalties, especially where national security is concerned.
