Well, not all hopes are gone, you can try sliding on dirt. Also econoboxes are very good learning cars. It's life-threatening to start drifting without any driving experience firsthand... such as dumbass civic/integ drivers died cause of understeering and slide straight into a tree. There are skills where it doesn't matter if you mod it or leave it stock. Take corner exit speed for example... if you get it second nature, know exactly where the end of the apex is, in a togue you can beat a lot of cars with that stock econobox... after driving like that for a while then it's the right time to consider modding it such as upgrading the suspension... like shocks and struts for faster cornering. I drive a stock CG6 accord... I want a TommyKaira or a JZX100 but obviously I can't deserve one right now.

Agreed.
It's always good to have a complete heap of a first car, so you can experiment around and learn things like weight shifting/distribution, turning apexes and the like, without dinging a really good car. I mean, if you make a mistake in an absolute trash-on-wheels, you're not going to be all down over it, as if you just scratched off the paint of an RX-7 or the like.

You said it better than I could. He is absolutely right. My first car isn't the best thing ever made (I still have it...). It was the infamous AE85 "Hachi-Go." Powered by the incredible 4A-C... a nice little 80ps SOHC heap of **** that shouldn't of even been built. But, it was a 5MT, RWD, and light. My dad put a rear end from an AE86 so that I can at least have both rear wheels spinning. But it's sole purpose was so I practice with the basic techniques needed for racing. Shifting techniques, weight distribution, etc. I crashed twice in it, yet I didn't care... they weren't serious crashes. But as soon as I showed my dad that I could do the "heel-toe" downshift, and successfully change the balance of the car on the downhill, he bought me... the AE86... and that's when all hell broke loose. I bet you could find a Corolla SR5 for a couple hundred dollars in the U.S. That's a good car to learn basics in, and you can at least have a car that looks like an AE86. From what I heard, the SR5 uses the AE86 chassis, but doesn't use the 4A-GE and it doens't have a LSD. So if you keep the SR5, and you get money later on, just buy a 4A-GE and it'll bolt right in nice and tight. There's my

OK, this has to be the best week of my life. My dad is starting his first GT-R project. He found a 1991 BNR32... it was stolen, so it has no title, but it's not a bad deal for 900,000¥ ($7,700USD). He told me he wasn't sure of getting it, but it's 6:45A.M right now, and he's already ordering parts from NISMO via the telephone... So it's NOT obvious. It's white with black interior, 90,000Kms on the RB26, and will become my dad's fastest track car hopefully. I'm going to take a drive with him in about 2 hours to pick up the car... I'm so happy... I never thought of my dad as being a GT-R type person. Incase everyone is wondering. The average amount of cars my dad and I build every year is 10-12 cars/year. We usually sell them though, but this one is a keeper for sure, which is why I'm so happy. So if you see the GT-R on my signature... I got it. Well I'm going to take a ride around the city... bored. Bye.

-Tom

Damn! You lucky son of a...

I've only even SEEN a Skyline once on the streets here. Costs more to federalize them than your dad paid for the whole car. Anyway, congrats on the purchase, I envy you man!

I hate my dad... He's yelling at me saying "Don't touch my car!" and telling everyone he got a GT-R... He's basically acting like a 14 year old would that just got a new video game or something... He went to NISMO like 2 hours ago, and he's still there... From what I saw on his credit card report, he spent about 500,000¥ on parts so far, and we've only had the car for a couple hours. He called me and he wants me to take the rest of this week off... I'm guessing to help build his car up. I hate him...

-Tom

I hope that that is a good kind of hating! My dad would a) never buy a car like that; b) never work with me on a car; and c) never let me work on even my own car. You lucky Tom! Now you better get a digital camera, maybe one of those cheap 1.3 mega pixel for $50 or so, and take photos, we are all anxious!

alex

Well right now isn't the best time to ask him. He wants the car done by Friday so we can take it out on Saturday night. After that, I'll attempt to get him buy me a camera because I want everyone to see our cars. He doesn't want me to take any pictures of his car... still don't know why. But if I get one, I'll take them anyways.

-Tom

A skyline project... that sounds like it could be a very ambitious, rewarding thing to build up. Pictures or no, I'll be always checking here out of interest. You're right, I don't get the "feeling" that you or your father would drive one. However, since I don't know either of you personally, there's always that little...

... I'm wandering off-topic. In any case, best of luck with that. I've seen a total of three Skylines in this town, and one RX-7 FC3S, which is a surprise. No idea what types they are though, they're always in passing. Always good to hear from you, Tom. It's really intriguing to hear what it's like in Japan, as opposed to what most people think it's like. Our (Australia's) next-door neighbour country.

I never thought as my dad being a GT-R person. He doesn't really like 4WD cars, but since he purchased the car at such a great price, he had to do it. It took him 30 seconds to decide whether or not he wanted it. Three Skylines and an FC? That's all you've seen? I went to Sydney for 2 days, and I was there for 10 minutes, and I see a BNCR33 parked on the side of the road.

The project is going really, really fast. Which is why I'm up at 4AM... my dad pulled the engine out and all that's left is the bare block which is ready to recieve it's share of parts. I ripped the interior, brakes & tyres, suspension, and rear end out... and that's what I'll be replacing today. My schedule is to install the new seats, install the brakes, and just get the suspension ready for a track setup. My dad is very particular to his cars... Basically what that means is that he only likes one tuner company for one car, which is why 99% of the parts he ordered are from Nissan Motorsports (NISMO). The same goes for our AE86's, all the parts are from TRD. Oh yeah, I was expecting this to be a 800+ps beast, but he "only" wants to push out 500-600ps. I asked why and he said, "Remember... power isn't everything, balance is." Which is true... I'm going to begin working on it in about an hour...

-Tom

Heh, yep. 3 Skylines, FC. That's all I've seen around town... Townsville is nowhere near the population mecca that Sydney or Brisbane are, though, so I remain surprised :P

"Power isn't everything, balance is."
Your dad take after Tsuchiya? He says the exact same thing. Of course, he's also dead right, too. Having snagged the Best Motoring clip that was posted in another thread here... ah, that was a good watch.

If he had no skill... he would still leave me in the dust. I race against him all the time at Sugo and Fuji, he will pass me, when he's in first. He has a super skill when it comes to track racing. He battled a guy from Top End who just started to race on the downhill instead of the highways. My dad doesn't like him, so he challenged him, beat him, and we haven't seen him back. I wouldn't want to race against my dad... he's a very scary person behind the wheel.

OH yeah, in the interior of the GT-R, I put the new NISMO gauges... The NISMO tachometer... 11,000RPM's. Even though the engine will never even get past 9,000RPM's, that's still pretty cool. The interior was easy, it's already done. I'm taking a huge break right now, I'm so tired... and it's only 8:30AM...

hmm... Talk about Bunta Fujiwara rolleyes:

What's rolleyes? Anyways, the BNR32 is completed. We stood up all night and finally finished the car. All it needs is a good paintjob, new badges, and that's it. We don't have the power because it needs a trip to the dynometer, but I'm guessing over 400ps. It's so damn fast. Anyways, we're taking it to the paint shop now, so see ya later.

This is the Trueno (pop-up headlights) only, Levins (fixed headlights) were not sold in the states.
Not all of them come with an LSD so be sure to check.

You can probably find some at the Club4AG classifieds:

ummm, you can suck my ****, i wasn't looking for a smart response ARK, why does everyone have to give a smart ass response when someone asks a question...

where do u get all this money to build these awsome cars
It's my dad's money. He has a lot, yet he doesn't spend it on anything but the house, and the cars. I don't know how he got it, but he's cheap. He won't buy me anything.

That's my money. It's not enough to be happy, but I love my job.

In Japan, the AE86 was released in 1983, in the U.S. it was released in 1985 due to it being a very popular car in Japan. But the U.S. took the car for granted, and it's impossible to find one that's in decent shape.

Yeah those are all the cars I have in my garages. I sold the Starion today, I'm waiting for the kid to pick it up though, so I'll get rid of that on my sig. Yeah, most girls drive Hondas over here. None can really afford the NSX. But there is a brother-sister team that races on the highways that both drive Type S Zeros. They are very, very fast.

Anyways, the BNR32 is probably the coolest car we have (other than my dad's AE86). It's so fast for a heavy car. My dad is using 110% of the RB26's potential. The car was raced uphill at Iroha-zaka yesterday. Today, we took it to Sugo and my dad ran great times. But I kept up with him in my Trueno. Then he put his emergency lights on (which was weird) and blew me away. We dynoed the car today also. It's making 479ps @ 7300 or 7600r/min. I forgot the r/min because I don't know where the dyno slips are... It's really fast. I also raced this Saturday. A young kid in a Sil-80 thought he could keep up with me (which would make him the victor). I said sure I'll race. He was good until the nonstop continuous hairpins began. It's funny, because he tried passing me on the short straightaways, and he looked so mad/nervious at the same time. I'm very relaxed when I race. But anyways, he had to slam on his brakes because at the speed he was going, it was impossible for him to overtake me on those hairpins. About midway though, I left him in the dust. Then after the race, he asked what I did to me Trueno. And after I explained, he said it isn't fair because I'm not using the original engine... which I found very funny. He lost, yet refused to admit it. My dad showed off the stupid GT-R, and everyone was going crazy over it. I guess they respect my dad or something... Well it's been a good week. Now we only have 3 spots left in the garage, so I wonder what's going to be next...

Hey Tom, how do the passes work? Do you guys just race on the local public roads running in the mountains or are these tracks? And if they are public, how do u deal with regular traveling cars and cops? You mentioned that cops enjoy the passes, but aren’t they concerned for the safety of others? Hell, if I tried to race like that in the mountains I’d be chased down, jailed, and my licenses suspended (it wouldn’t help that I already have a bad driving record with the cops).

I'll answer all those questions. All are public roads, we deal with traffic on the blind hairpins by assigning people to flash their headlights at us when a car is coming. It's really easy to see where cars are coming from since it's 100% black on the touge. The only road we don't worry about traffic is Iroha-zaka. It's a one way road that goes downhill, and another road that goes uphill. The police enjoy it, but they will only bust a racer if he's doing something unethical. If we race, and that's it... the police do not care. Most of the times, the police will arrange everything from top the bottom due to them having hand radios. Basically, it's just like Initial D. Most of the racers aren't stupid and therefore the cops aren't very concerned. But lately, they haven't been around. What I think they do, is it's our discretion if we want to race. If we endanger the public, I'd understand the cops stopping the race.

Okay seriously, my dad is offering to get my next car... I need ideas. I was thinking of S13, RPS13, or a Sil-80. But I'd rather have an N/A. I'm confused...

-Tom

As crazy as it may sound, I say a Chevrolet Silverado for something totally new, but it'd be TOO expensive just to get one. Otherwise, Sil-80 or 300ZX should do just as good...
