yes, thats very strange...

10 or so years ago a trawler in my home town accidently reeled in a WW2 mine off the coast of N Ireland...it exploded and ripped a hole on the £10 million boat which promptly sank....my brother in law was a fisherman on board at the time but they all managed to be rescued safely...the mine was estimated to be 20 meters away from the boat when it exploded in its nets...

with that in mind i would say that hitting one with an axe is very strange indeed...
 
One of the reasons I think they were so wreckless with it was because they knew that it probably took some force to set off one of those depth charges...
