What series are you runing? Keep in mind that the Mazda Cup is a Fixed setup series meaning that you can't change setup so you won't see it till you run a different series.

Its for the InRacingNews Challenge MC. I have only raced in 16 races (total on iRacing), and most of those happened over 6 months ago. My safety rating is D4.43 though, so I have access to a fair amount of content.. I haven't purchased anything yet, though.
Ya you have to save those shared setups
Noooo. Thank you for the response. I really wished I had saved that setup. I am sure it would have taught me a lot about how setups work in iRacing.
I got a great setup for Indycar at Indy :sly:
Thanks for the offer mate.. Unfortunately I don't have that car. Maybe later on, I will hit you up for that.:)

So, who's planning on running the 2.4hrs of Daytona this Saturday?

Looking forward to this race. It'll be the longest sim race I've ever done so far. Got a new sport seat coming in a day or two and hope its comfy.:)

Hope to see GTP representing on Saturday.👍

I'll definitely be there! Gotta find a good setup for the Riley! Only one I have is the one that guy shared on the hosted session we were a few weeks back...

Then you need to meet your MRP to get promoted to C license, just do 4 races or TTs on the Grand Touring Cup with the MX5 and you'll get promoted! Then the real good stuff in iRacing starts!

I got a setup to share if you want it. I ran a best of 1:39.9xx and in the 41's with full fuel load. A guy by the name David Scott shared it to all the other night in a SRT 2.4 practice. Its pretty stable all around and much better in turn 1 than any setup tried so far. Just wonder if the updated scan is going to change how it feels? Hope not.

Thanks Jav...

Unfortunately it looks like I just missed the series being at Laguna Seca. The next track I have is Okayama. But, the series doesn't go there until April.

Just curious but when you say tougher...tougher in what way?

I'll take a crack at this..

For one most of the cars don't have ABS. This takes a while to get used to. No more mashing the brake to the floor like in GT5 when you want full braking force. It is very, very easy to lock up the brakes in iRacing. In which case you need to be quick with your feet, and stable with your hands.

Secondly. The cars are just more "lively." The cars are very responsive, but if your not careful you will end up backwards.. a lot. It will take a while to keep the car in the right direction. But once you get the feel of keeping it on the track, every little advancement is so rewarding. When I am running fast on this service, I really feel like I am on the edge of spinning out at almost every corner and braking point.

Thirdly. If you crash, there is no getting back on the track and continuing the race. If you are lucky you will have taken slight damage, and can limp back to the pits. Frequently, however, you will have to call for the "tow truck." This will take you to the pits, where you will likely lose multiple laps while the repairs take place.

Fourth.. The safety rating system. To advance to better series and better cars, you must prove that you are a safe driver. In order to accomplish this you will need to keep your loss of control, going slightly off track, and contact with others to a minimum. For some racers this is quite easy and natural. For others this is quite difficult.

There are probably other things that I am forgetting... but this should give you a good idea of how iRacing is different than GT5.

All of the above, though, makes it very rewarding when done right. It will be "tougher" initially, but I am sure you will find your groove.

Thanks for the detailed explanation red much appreciated and very interesting :) So let me ask you this regarding the Skippy....if I can drive the cars in GPL with some form of skill, would I be able to tame the Skippy or even the Star Mazda?

You are very welcome.

As for giving you information about the Skippy.. I am not the man for that job.(I have not purchased that content)

HAHA..improvement.

Day 1 practice, after a few laps I got my time on Watkins down to 1.27 in the Skippy. That is about 2 - 3 seconds off the world record right now. I am 100% sure I can keep 1.27 as my race pace without incidents after a few days and looking at the splits, this is quite a good time and should be top 3. This is only my second track in the Skip, pretty chuffed about this.

But of course, race day will be different as I am sure someone will hit me from the back..argh...need to qualify with a nice pace.

My goals for this week
Qualifying time: 1.26.
Race pace: 1.27.

Question:

I'm an experienced sim racer, mostly from GT, and i consider myself one of the fastest in the game. Starting with zero iracing experience, how many hours of racing time and how many many $ before i can start racing in the more advanced leagues? (F1 etc)

Depends on how GOOD you really are. Being good at GT5 is one thing. Being good on a sim where almost everything is taken account for is a totally different animal. I know plenty of people from GT that thought they could jump in iRacing fairly quickly and be fast. Little did they know, they had to completely alter their driving style.

It all depends on how clean you drive, etc. But why rush to Class A for F1? Not sure how popular that car is now... Traditionally, Star Mazda (Class C), has been more popular along with the Skippy. It has always seemed too me F1 is more for the aliens with the Pro licences.

But the sim does nothing to prevent you from hitting Class A quickly. Your main issue will be other players. Sometimes being super fast will attract a lot more trouble because you'll be overtaking a lot more than the average person and taking lots more risks.

* There is also time trials. But it might be quite dull if that's all you do. Also note SR gain via TTs is much slower. The fastest way to fast track is racing, then qualifying, and lastly, TTs.

My guess would be these cars wouldn't give you very much trouble from what I've read of GPL. But that's just a guess.

I came from GT and consider myself to be pretty decent at that sim, but there is a massive learning curve with iRacing. Most notably the braking (no anti lock), and the only option for an interior driving view as opposed to GT's ground view, is also a big change. You can make the jump pretty easily, but I've found it tough to jump back and forth between the two.

Give iRacing a shot for 3 months, it's worth it.

Good luck!

i have had iracing for lest than a month now and i am almost b class which means i can run the hpd and corvette. about money i spent 75 bucks on a year and 130 bucks on cars and tracks just to get to this point, but i will not have to spend any more money really on tracks or cars for a while unless i go down the oval route.

Just curious but when you say tougher...tougher in what way?

No ABS, no nose-camera, more realistic handling and tire model. Less hand-holding. When you get a corner right, it's all you. GT5 feels terribly forgiving compared to iRacing.

In automative terms, it feels like you can never turn the traction control off in GT5, whereas iRacing never lets you turn traction control on, haha!

Hello iracing
Gt5 is getting worse do to recent update! IMO. Been reading alot about iracing and I'm gonna give it a go!

Yeah it can get a little pricey but it's money well spent! Just try to stick to a series to lower the entry fee. Pick some tracks that's reused in multiple series. If you're a Road guy try to avoid Oval purchases. for instance, Star Mazda is running Iowa this season. Might not be the best buy for a newcomer!

Skippy ran New Hampshire when I joined and never ran it again.

Popular tracks is stuff like Watkins Glen, Spa, Mid Ohio, and Road America. Those are usually staple! I personally love Suzuka and I here Oulton Park is the shiznit. I'm going to buy that even tho my series not running it. Will just try it out in Indy car Fixed I think

this is what i have purchased

1 year + f1 car, silverstone, zandvot

cars, nascar impala, mustang, hpd, corvette (i really want to be in b series to race both cars)

tracks, daytona, spa, road atlanta, watkins, sebring, mosport, suzuka

I WOULD SPEND IT AGAIN in a heart beat.

Yeah.. I would say you are pretty decent. GTAcademy finalist and all. I will look for you on iRacing. I assume it is just your full name, John.

I see. Then say a top iracing driver decided to start from scratch. With him in mind, same question as above.
I can vouch that Tony (SuperSic) is pure alien... and he is not the alien type that just time trials. He is a pure racer. I have been in many leagues with him here on GTPlanet, and he is pretty much "untouchable."

So if he puts his mind to it, I believe he really could get toward the top echelons of iRacing.

So then we are back to the question of what it would take, time wise, and $ wise to get there. Tony, I have only raced 16 races so far.. So very minimal experience to speak from. But, in those 16 races and probably 6 TTs I am at a D 4.43 safety rating. Everytime you get above 3.00 you are eligible for the next class upgrade. So if I purchased the correct content, I would basically be vaulted to class B 2.43. So for me, with probably another 5-6 races I should have enough safety rating to reach class A.

Also, I signed up for a one year plan through the league website, and it was only $49 for the first full year. This is all the exact same content as the $99 yearly plan. Link to the league page.

Hopefully someone here that is more knowledgeable about the costs to get to the top can break it down for you.

Supersic, I am going to disagree from other people a little bit.

1. If you are as alien as other people say, I think skill wouldn't stop you from reaching the time. It might take 2 months or so for you to fast track to Class A to race the F1, but "time" is hard to say because we don't know how much you can play a day etc. You have to remember that races are done at certain times so you cannot just hop in one and hop out. Rookie class runs every hour but as you move up in class, the races are here and there.

I am also not quite sure how many times you can fast track in a season?

2. Money, it will cost you. I ain't going to suger coat it. Other people might tell you its $0 because you can just race the same tracks over and over in the rookie series to boost your Class all the way to F1. But I am realistic, I don't think you will do this because it will be super boooorrrringggg. As a super rough estimate, I have bought most of the road tracks and it costed me $110 including discounts. Cars are about $10 or so with the discount so you can buy all the tracks and buy "certain" cars to boost your class, so say an extra $20 - $30. That'll bring you to about $150 to move up to A on the basis that you don't want to race the rookie ---> A class but you want to be something like rookie ---> d class (fast track) ---> c class (do a few new series) etc and so on.

3. I can see you are quite competitive like me, you aint going to race one race in a series and not touch it until the tracks up. I buy most tracks of a series to get me enough races to count my points to see how I go. You might want to do the same, you get to use the tracks over and over anyway. its NOT a one time use only.

as for price, don't let it put you off. time and time again you see people on these forums asking about price and after they buy it they say "#@$@#$ totally worth it!!!"

Very nice list there 👍

Prototype & GT series is great fun; hope you'll enjoy it

Yep it's John Wilding and you'll find me in the Mustang series this season. I'm giving a full season a shot since I've never done a season of racing anywhere. I also like the MX-5 Grand Touring series....go figure. :)

See you out there!

I just led the skippy race for 14 laps, built up a nice 3 second lead... and then spun in T1. Crap. That sucked. I could have had a nice, juicy 116 points to launch me up the div 3 leader board. Oh well.

This weeks configuration of Watkins is sooooo boring. I can't bring myself to repeat the race tonight.
