Mine is 3.49 Class A.... But to be honest I don't worry about Safety Rating at all. For me iRating is everything, not SR. If you drive to improve your SR, you will always drive worse. Drive to win, in the end it is a race. I'm not saying drive the car stupidly deep into corners and take people out or just send a huge dive bomb down the inside. Just drive at your limit and because you're that bit more concentrated you'll make fewer mistakes.

My limit and safe point are fairly close, which is quite good because I just found out sunday that a win with no incidents @ south boston rookie legends is + .54 SR (SR is in the same block as your class right?) vs a + .07 or such which boosted me straight to a 3.47.

Anyway is there some sort of trick to the MX-5, it just feels kinda dull and boring but not necessarily easily mastered if you know what I mean

A win doesn't give you an SR bonus. Any time you go above or below a whole number, you get a ~0.50 boost (or loss).

So if you lose .02 from a 3.01 you'll actually end up with a 2.49 for a total loss of -0.52.

The MX-5 is a momentum car, it's all about maintaining as much speed as possible, getting the proper lines through, and keeping everything in check. If you drop too much speed from early/aggressive braking you will lose significantly more time than you would in something like the HPD or any other "fast" car.

Mad, we're not as good as you. You can drive to win, we mere mortals try to drive and just stay on the black stuff. hahaha

I never "drive to win" I simply drive to pass the guy ahead of me without causing an accident. If I manage that, I will then think about passing the next guy ahead. But I never push it to the limit anyways, I'd rather finish 2nd or 3rd going at 90% than risking spinning or crashing out because I was going at 99%.

My point with the "drive to win" philosophy is just that I don't hold back and deliberately try and get SR and have a "safe" race. I know for me, whenever I hold back and try and get SR I always bugger up and crash just due to lack of concentration.

So drive within your limits at 90-95% but don't just cruise around a long way from your peak.

That's just my opinion though, each driver has a different style and different strategies work for different people. 👍

Yeah, it's the same reason I never made it very far in real-life open-wheel racing. I was always more concerned with crashing the car and pissing off my dad and/or other drivers who got involved than I was with winning. So I always finished mid-pack, but I still loved every second of it. We weren't exactly poor, but I couldn't write off a $35k track car either and just get another one for the next race. I guess this driving style has stuck with me, even into the sim racing world.

Mad94d: How close are you to making the pro series in iRacing? Even thought about it? With your iRating you've got the potential for it.

Go to iRacing's skippy forum board. There are several threads sticked to the top describing how to drive the car. It will answer every question.

Most people left foot brake in the skip. However, this is not realistic because the steering column is in the way (or something like that). Again, see the iRacing forum. It will tell you all the different shifting techniques.

I do left foot brake and rarely use the clutch. The only time you have to use the clutch is on the starting (if you want to get a good start that is).

you dont need the clutch in the skippy if you plan to shift on the limiter. You can also use clutch if you want. Depends on how you want to drive.

I don't use clutch in the skip. I shift on the limiter and blip on the downshift

Thanks for the advices. I did read the post on the iracing forums and it is definitely very useful in answering my question about the transmissions, guess I should fit on the sequential shifter to get a more realistic experience on iracing!

anytime Tuck, good luck.

superbike, whats your iracing name? the one in the other thread doesn't work unless your account is inactive?

I was going for it at the start of this season but I decided that the V8 Supercars series is more up my alley anyway. The racing is really competitive so i'm happy enough in that.

For example, this is the latest round video done for the series incorporating some of the live broadcast commentary as well. I finished 2nd in this race, but the racing is absolutely top class.

only 2nd? ;)

Watched the vid, one thing I love about it is how slight contact results in no big damage and allowxs you to still keep racing. Slight touch in Skip = DNF :(

Yeah, that's the reason I love V8 Supercars. However, all of those slight touches you see are 4x's.... It's pretty stupid but ah well, nothing you can do. No-one cares about SR anyway in the series so we all just end up with 20 incidents plus.

anytime Tuck, good luck.

Guess I should update it. Got tired of having a number 2 after my name so changed it.

It's now "Jason M Garrett"

I have Road Atlana down to 1.06 in my Skip, 1s from WR. Good enough for me! Going to try to nail that down for 15 laps.

As a class A driver, I can tell you that you pretty much have to let go all your inhibitions about protecting your SR. Otherwise it will eat you up inside. The SR system is MUCH harder to A class drivers than they are to B, C and especially D. I was at 3.60 when I made it to A a couple days ago. But that took a serious tumble in the last couple of days due to some very bad luck on the track, and I was down to 1.20 in just TWO DAYS! :nervous:

Thankfully I had a couple of Inc-free races in the Skip so I'm now back up to 1.96. :dopey:

It's crazy how much they drain from you at this license level. Honestly though, I just wanted to get my A class license just to say that I got it. I really don't plan on driving the FW31 since hardly anybody participates in that series anyway. It's pretty dead. So if I get demoted to B, oh well, no big deal. Long as I can maintain a B license so I can race B-class cars I'm good to go :)

Careful though...That philosophy could soon tank your SR, trust me. If you are at D License and don't care if your SR falls to 1.00 or below, then by all means drive to your very limit! But if you're at B or above, you have to find the perfect balancing act between being cautious and being aggressive and going in for the kill. :D

No iRacing for me this week I think, don't have Daytona nor Road Atlanta and the HPD and Skippy are the only two cars I'm using right now.

Maybe if I get some spare time I'll try the SM at Spa.

Well I want to rank up out of rookie so im trying to get to 4.00 for fast track. I love doing legends but im just not good at it. And of course that means I just need to practice but right now i love those miatas!

Update:

Got my new computer built. Switched out the motherboard, CPU, ram, & upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit from Windows Vista 32-bit. I am now running that new Core i5 Sandybridge quad core CPU, 8gb ram, and reusing my 560ti video card. Frame rates are all kinds of awesome now. Way over 100+ when I care to check. My old system was an intel quad core 2 btw (only 2.4 ghz vs the 3.3 ghz I get now)

Only had time to do 1 race in the Star Mazda at Suzuka. Had lots of fun and enjoyed myself. But this week Star Mazda series is running SPA and I don't want to spend the ramp up time to learn how to drive the Star on this demanding track. So I am thinking to take a break and go do some Ovals this week. Having a great time rolling around in this SK Modified. I want to take my time and get to Class C Ovals. No rush, but eventually I want to drive the Indy car.

Purchased another road course (Zandavoot) and a short Oval course (Bristol).

I'm not really a huge NASCAR fan. I do casually watch it...

Life is good. I feel so blessed to have such a great computer to run this quality sim. Feels so great to come back.

Listen to this guy, he's a champion for a reason 👍

I'll definitely be doing some SM at Spa!

Well, maybe I'll try to come out a little if I have time haha.

Nice setup! I am planning to get a job so I can get a computer for college/gaming purposes :D Hoping it will have a i5-2500k with atleast a gtx 550 graphics card.

Isamu, that's why I was confused as to why you fast tracked to a class. If you just plan on racing the Skip then getting a class isn't worth it unless you got there naturally. If it got there by grinding then, good luck.

Have you given other cars a try? HPD is a pretty cool car.

I am almost c class and I will purposely not get it an stick to d class to get the free tow. No other series looks interesting at this stage but the Skip.

You don't need to give Mad advice. His probably the best driver here.

Swift you bring up a good point and trust me dude, I would easily have stuck with Class D or C, *IF* the Skip and the Star Mazda raced every hour. But they don't, so I need to upgrade my license because I like racing every hour or as much as possible, plus, I want to keep at least B-class, because I intend to race the Dallara car.

Swift....you must understand that there is a HUUUGE gap of boredom inbetween races. iRacing is like a hot drug for me right now, and every time a race end I feel like what a druggie would feel like if he came down from his "high". I want races to be every hour instead of two, because I need to get my fix asap after a race.

That is why I'm hoping all you iRacing fans in this thread will fight for our cause and vote for races every hour, particularly for the 30-45 minute popular races like the Skippy, the Star Mazda, the Mustang, etc. Please all vote and let iRacing know we want to be able to hop in and race these popular cars every hour so that we aren't forced to upgrade our Licenses to A just to be able to drive more cars while we wait for the next Skippy or whatever popular race to begin.

Haha. Yea I get you. That makes
More snese Maybe find something in between races. A breather work well sometimes :)

I normally take a break. Watch the replay. Watch what the best driver did etc. time goes by quick.

Had a nice race on okayama, got a podium finish. It was quite difficult because I was in 3rd place, there were 2 guys behind me and one guy infront of me. We managed to stay in a tight pack until lap 21 when the 5th place guy missed his braking point and slammed into 4th place guy on the last corner.

2nd place guy was impossible to pass, he was slower then me and I had so many chances to overtake him, but It was too unsafe so I just stuck with 3rd place for the entire race :)

Promotion is at the end of this week for rookie. So just make sure you are over 3.00 at the end of the week and you are set. Unless of course you get above 4.0 before then

I happen to have an ipod touch, I want to see if I can get the iracedash for it. I'm still trying to figure out how I will mount the ipod to my g27, a block of wood or something? (with velcro).
