Cheers. That's a tempting buy, have driven that track since Shift or Grid? You been in the DP this week Spinner?

It's a great track for the DP. I haven't done any Grand Am races this season , but Brands was my first ever race in the DP last season.

(I'm all about the Caddy this season :D )

Brace yourselves. The videos I'm about to upload for you to see will make you attempt suicide.

"So, let's put 17 cars on Sonoma with poor visibility because of the hills and elevation change, and let's make them all drive like... well, iRacers. (And not the good type, either)"

Oh, and a PM I just sent:

You ruined my race by stopping on the track. Please, don't let it happen again. I don't care about circumstances, there's a reason cars don't stop and drive backwards on racetracks; it's because cars get damaged when they crash into each other. That's why you don't stop on track. Don't stop on track. Don't do it. Are we clear?

Sounds like a classic D Class race.. better grab some popcorn for these :-/

Indy = Caution after Caution :grumpy: I lasted over 100 laps until I was caught up in a crash, was in p3 when p2 hit p1 and spun and hit p3 Me 🤬 and I started p9. I will try again:sly:

NTMv5, huge, tread rubber compounds and how they behave, at least on a few cars next season:

DaveK
Sterling, (and everyone else reading)

I am still working hard on the tire model, for sure. We decided after we put out the first couple iterations of it that everyone would be better off if we didn't put out a lot of little updates, but waited until we had big improvements to roll out. That way, you're not having to redo setups as much. And I typically have my head down, figuring stuff out, coding things up, and I don't really get into the forums too often. That makes it seem like I'm off on holiday, but believe me, I'd rather be figuring out how tires work than wasting time on some silly vacation. Just ask my kids about my beach-side reading material.

The latest iteration of the tire model (which is not out yet), represents a huge amount of work on the tread rubber compounds and how they behave. I think you will like it--we hope to have at least a few cars with this new tread model next season.

I wonder when iRacing is going to fix these. BTW I have many of these saved as replays. I'll never forget the first time I saw my Corvette reach an altitude of 34,000 feet :D

Yeah, like three cars. I wasn't so lucky. Well, at least I was luckier than Matty. 👍

That was practice, I made lap 154 in the 500. Bad wreck on restart from 9th. Came 10th 46 laps down.

Well I decided it was time to try a practice session to see if my lap top would hold a good frame rate with other cars on track and I am pleased to say it held a steady 72-78 FPS The problem I had was the other drivers it was like Gran Turismo all over again there were guys going around the track against traffic sitting in the gravel traps doing donuts and so on. I don't get why people would pay good money to drive like knobs. I would imagine that a lot of these drivers got in on the free Caddy deal like my self

Which track was that ? Last week I was in a practice session alone at Mid Ohio. As I was the only person there , I thought Id drive out of pits and back to the grid to practice a standing start. As soon as I was detected driving the wrong way I was booted from the track and disqualified from the session.

Hey guys, does anyone else have on-track experience?

I just had a very awesome track day experience at my local track (Mosport) and it was awesome, but I'm curious if anyone else thinks that the iRacing physics are a bit "overdone." Does anyone else find it more difficult to drive cars in iRacing, than it is to drive the cars in real life? Does anyone else find that iRacing makes cars much twitchier under braking?

Granted, that should give you some idea about how my Subaru was handling; my word, it was beautiful.

Anyways, let the real life vs. iRacing physics talk commence please. :) I really want to hear if anyone else has any similar thoughts.

I do think iracing has it's issues that real life produces a smoother feel. One thing that seems to be easier in real life is actually finding the racing line or seeing where track goes compared to a game in general.

This might be down to the ability to turn one's head. That's one more thing I need to work on when I'm actually in the seat of the car, is where I look, and I think it seems apparent even (or especially) in iRacing.

True, I think it comes from looking at real time vs computer based landscapes which don't always compute in your brain to a true distance sometimes.

It's the only downside to being in a fixed position without ability to be involved in that world. I'm sure triple screens and better pedals all help with the feel.

I had a similar feeling when I did my first track day last year. I'm not really sure, but I'm inclined to write a lot of it off to the huge amount more information you have in a real car. It's so much easier to feel and hear when you're just starting to lock up or lose grip.

I know iRacings physics aren't all correct, so I don't want it to seem like I'm saying that it's all good because it's not. But I think a lot of the confidence I feel when I'm on a track is more to do with the level of information I'm getting about the car. I just feel a lot more connected, and a lot more confident that I'll know about it before the car lets go.

Hell, I did Phillip Island earlier this year and at the start of the day I was wetting myself at the thought of barrelling into some of the corners at the same pace I do in iRacing. But come the end of the day, no worries, because you can feel what the car is doing.

(Only problem is that I've got an NA MX5, and it only manages to go for 5 or 6 minutes flat out before it starts overheating...but that's another story.) ;)

Why don't more people race the spec racer ford? It's hilariously good fun! Raced it in an 18 car field last night at Sonoma IRL 2007, such a blast, came 6th from 14th on the grid. Gonna race these more often.

It was an off week actually, guess people don't like Sonoma that much. I've been racing it since week 1 and the races are usually well populated. This week we're racing at Okayama full so we should see more people joining in.

And I agree it's a very fun series to run, I'm having a great time at it.

A lot of the things that makes a different is already mention. Witch comes down to how the inner gyro gives you information about what happening to the car.
But you also have a different car underneath you in iRacing compared to your real life car.
iRacing try their best to simulate motorsport, that means they give us race cars. Car with roll cage, slick tires and over all built with a purpose to race.
Roll cage does a lot more to a car than safety for the driver, it also stiffen up the chassis a lot. That changes the handling.

And when it comes to tires, even the best available road tires doesn't come close to slick tires. They are made to be able to go a lot faster, and when you challenge them on their limit the speed is higher and it will feel a lot different compared to challenge our road tires.

Also a road car have a brake balance of 70/30 and normally a pretty big amount of "toe in" on the rear tires and this create a lot of balance to the car when braking. Maybe we can call it under steer even, but in the end that feels more stable than anything closer to 50/50 brake balance.

So I don't really feel like the physics are overdone in iRacing, but I would never in my right mind call it similar to real life. But I wouldn't really compare it to real life if my only experience on the track was my private road car ;)

But I like the questions you ask here.

You can generate a better feel for the game with setting it up better. You can tweak the sound so you hear your tires better. With practice this can give you information you lack sitting still racing. Instead of feel your car start to slide, you can hear it. I use a headset to bring the sounds closer and in that way it works as information more than just sound.
Maybe this sounds un natural, because you wont really hear your tires that much in a noisy race car, but it can help you because you lack that inner gyro feel you DO have in a real race car;)

I can confirm that 3 screens helps a lot when it comes to turn in points, and even more on turn out points because you have a more natural view. But distance to the monitor/TV is just as important. If you feel like driving from the back seat you will struggle hitting your turn in points with 1 screen or 5.

Oh and yes I have track experience both in road cars and track cars (you can rent a BMW 3 series on one of the race track in Norway, witch is purpose build for track driving/racing)

(renting that car for a day was super expensive (equal to 5,5 year of iRacing full price), but it included a class to learn about safety and race craft, track walk and a instructor telling you how you should select your driving line etc. Then practice, qualify and a "pretended" race with the other ones. They didn't really allow us to race close.

I think this explains it well:

I’ve been driving a Spec Racer Ford for about 3 years now, so I was very excited to have an iRacing version come out to practice with. When I first tried it, I thought it handled terribly and not at all like the real car. Then after awhile I went back to it and realized that it actually was a very accurate representation. I found that driving a car in real life is much easier than a sim, as you have much higher quality input from the car and your surroundings. All of the things I felt were happening in the game such as the lift throttle oversteer were happening in the real car as well, but I was compensating for it without even realizing it.

To make a long story short, the whole experience has made me a better sim racer and real racer, and hopefully you can benefit from my experiences as well.

Ah I see. I only started looking yesterday after running it in a TT. Glad it has plenty going on then. I reckon brands hatch would be a blast in it.
