(I'll reply to this post even though it's not directed at me, I realise it isn't, and am not trying to speak for the OP or argue his or her case against this poster, I just think they're interesting points to reply to.)
I'm pretty sick of these types of threads, and while you do have good points it does frustrate me having to see this on a forum I primarily come to, to find out more things about a game I love playing.
It's a discussion forum related to GT. So people discussing what they think about GT isn't really a big surprise I'd say. If there are a lot of threads about the same issues that a lot of people have with this game, maybe it's because these issues are, at least to part of the playerbase, valid concerns?
Also keep in mind that people that take the time to vent here probably love, if not the game, then at least the series, enough to care about it. People that simply don't like it won't play it and won't post about it. There are however a lot of people that really like parts of this game but are disappointed about other parts.
For starters, you are level 21, so by now you have played this game for quite a while and have just unlocked the first set of higher tier events. It's quite possible you are just a bit bored of the game now and need a break, I did when I reached that level, because I'd be playing GT and nothing else.
Can't speak for the OP, but I'm level 27 or so now (Aspec), I'm not bored with the game, it's just very limited in what it allows me to do. I can see so many ways this game could be far more enjoyable, all easily achievable with only small changes, yet it is what it is, a great driving engine packaged in a sub-par racing game.
To say this game was the biggest dissapointment you've had in 5 years is a little un-fair. You must of been really riding the hype and taking every bit of information as full features. I just always think that there is no other game which can offer all or ever half of what GT can offer in terms of features, so why should I be dissapointed?
If that's how you feel, you shouldn't. It's not how the OP feels though, if to him this is the biggest disappointment in 5 years, that's just what it is. Not up to you to tell him how to feel about anything, really. I wouldn't say it's my biggest disappointment in 5 years, but I'd be lying if I said I am not disappointed in what they made of this game. And that was me already expecting a game with the well-known GT-series flukes and crazy stuff.
Racing- You only need tune your cars if you want, it took me a second playthrough to realise I can buy a car from UCD and after an oil change it's more than capable to run stock against other cars AND provide a close, fun and challenging race.
Tuning cars is a big part of the game. Also, while some cars will have a race they are exactly matched for, a lot (and I do mean
a lot) don't. And even if there is a well-matched race, it could be in any of the difficulty-levels. And is always limited to between 1 to 5 tracks. And most don't have tire wear or fuel use. And are in the dry during the day. And are only a few laps, without qualifying, so you have to have a car that can overtake 6 others in 3 laps... maybe to you this is reallistic racing, and enough options for each car... to me (and I think to many) it just isn't. Not even close. So far from it, I simply don't get how someone who runs 24 hour races in real life and calls himself a perfectionist can have signed off on this...
Saying you are not motivated, again you should just take a break. I doubt you'd play any other game if you didn't want to? So don't blame the game, just stop playing it...
While I agree to some extent with the "don't like it? don't play it!" mentality, it's not really what this is about. If people simply don't like the game, you're right.
However, if people, like me, really like
some of the game. And have liked the series for a long time now. Doesn't it make sense for them to be disappointed?
I love racing cars in this game, but every session I play I'm thinking "I wish I could just..." "If only they'd..." "Why haven't they..." "Why would they do that..."
Maybe you're right and my expectations where far too high. However, as I explained in a previous post, there are issues I can understand, they are the result of time-constraints mostly. Some issues though, simply aren't. They could've been easily prevented. Now of course, liking a game is an opinion, so maybe while I don't like the way Aspec was handled, everybody else does. Maybe I'm just weird. There seem to be quite a few weird people then, though. It might be we're actually on to something.
What you said about Rain and Night racing are fair really. I don't really see them as a problem though. Rain is Wet, Night is Dark - It's what you expect really.
Still, having played through everything bar the endurances and the FGT championship, I've raced in the rain maybe twice? And at night once or twice? Just seems odd to me.
As for the sound, whats wrong with it? It's much better than other GT games. The sound detail is up there with some of the other best console games to be honest.
Won't argue here, I think the sound's fine
The options to tailor races to certain times of day and starting grid positions and such have never been available in most racing games, I don't see why you should get so upset over it when you have the choice to have time change on anyway, which is more than most games give.
It is once again, to me at least, an issue of great potential not being used. The fact that all these options aren't in other games (which I can't say for sure, but I'll believe you) doesn't mean they don't have to be in GT5. They could, very easily, give us all these great options to use the engine they made in so many fantastic ways. Yet, they haven't.
Personally, and I understand the point you made, the paint system is fine. If you are not bothered to collect certain colours fast and you are patient it'll work straight into you hands as a nice extra feature that could of been left out. I like the fact I can paint my cars. It's like all Japanees game design, it's there in such a way that it doesn't give you everything for free, like most western players have come to expect from western games. A colour wheel would destroy the idea of rare colours, just like rare used cars - so both you and whoever see you online won't be able to appreciate how rare or unique your ride is.
This is very much design philosophy. I don't care much either way. While I do enjoy repainting some cars, it's hardly an important part of the game to me. However, if it was, I could see myself not being to happy about how this was handled. Still, I wouldn't say they've made a mistake here, they just did it differently to how I would've done it. There's something to be said for the choice they made, as you point out.
What you wrote after those points was just out of anger, and I think after reflection and letting the game sit outside of your console for a few days/weeks will fix that. You are not going to forget playing this game either way, like the game or not. Also the production value is VERY high, think about how polished the game is and the features and physics included. Where other games have 70 cars and around 20 tracks you get a whole lot more in Granturismo, even excluding the standard cars.
Again, can't speak for the OP, but to me, this game does indeed have some very strong points. It also has some very noticable flaws though. I agree that the features and physics and carlist are fantastic. But
because of that, I'm very disappointed about what they let me do whith those features and physics and cars. It's
because of the high quality of parts of this game that the lack of quality in other areas is both so obvious and so frustrating.
The facts are:
They advertise the game with 1000 cars - and it does.
They advertise the game with weather change and night- and it does.
The dirt accumulation is strange and only seems to work whilst racing.
"and much more?" Sony didn't advertise any features that didn't make it into the game.
True. Doesn't change a thing about what I think of the game though. I'm not angry at PD for lying to me or anything, I'm disappointed that this game, which I do still like, isn't even half as good as it could have very easily been...
To say this game is a cash cow is COMPLETELY UNFAIR. Don't be silly when other games like COD:Blackops have less new features than you have fingers. Things like the Paint Tickets, Standard car compatability, online profile and other small details were added when their percieved value is nothing. PD could of released a cash cow, physics/graphics updated GT4.
I agree with you here, I don't think it's a cash cow. I think they did intend it to be a great game. For some reason though, they seem to miss some obvious flaws in every GT, and in this one more then ever.
Another Point to add is that the game feels amazing when you are playing with a wheel. I have a friend who recently started playing with a wheel and said it's a completely different game.
This is both completely true and completely false. While driving with a wheel is indeed amazing, it doesn't change a thing about any of my issues with the game. My issues aren't with driving. Actually, even with a DS3 I find driving all the cars very enjoyable (though less than with a wheel). I still want to be able to drive the cars in meaningful races though...
You played prologue so long because you wanted to play GT5, and now you've played GT5 you are sad it's comming or seems to be getting to the end and you've not had the experience you'd imagined.
Can't really reply to this one as it very much relates to the OP's post only.
So to review if you don't want to read this all:
You've been playing too long, without what makes GT great: A FFB Wheel.
You tuned your cars too much so the early races were too easy.
You are incredibly picky and don't care so much for physics (which you didn't mention) as you do for graphics.
The online experience is good, friends or not some of the public lobbies have some great racing in it.
Don't know if the OP plays without a wheel... I've played with a wheel, but like I said, it doesn't change much about my issues with the game.
It could be that the OP doesn't care much for physics, though it could also be that, like me, he thinks they're amazing and
because of that he's disappointed in the rest of the game. Personally, I don't even care for graphics that much... I mean, yes, the game looks amazing. Yes, standard cars look less good. No, I don't really care about that, it all looks good enough to serve it's purpose to me. What I care about most of all is gameplay. That's where the game lacks most in my opinion. Of course, blocky shadows shouldn't be in this game, but I can live with them if the rest of the game is great.
Online is ok-ish, though the interface is unwieldy and, for me and my schedule, it often takes to long to find a race I want to be in and actually have it start... Besides that, while I enjoy the occasional online bout, I think offline racing is at least as important. At least to me it is. Maybe that's unrealistic in this day and age, I realise that.
I really want the mods to make a review area in this forum. So I don't have to see this negativity when I'm here to have a good time whilst enjoying the game.
Sorry - I'm just angry with all these negative reviews, it's hard to enjoy the forums if there are so many threads constantly picking up the short comings of the game.
A review area could be a good idea. However, most of these threads are easily recognisable, and thus skippable, by their title. You don't have to read them.
And while you are angry with all these negative reviews, and they stop you from enjoying these forums, some people are "angry" (well, more disappointed really, at least in my case) with the negative points in this game, which to some extent stop us from enjoying it.
