Is anyone else disappointed with GT5?

I have no problem with that as long as it wasn't mandatory. It would take just as long to start a race to see whether it was uncompetitive or not. But I think there are more important aspects of the game that need addressing, and seeing as PD have finite resource of programmers, to got with their finite number of graphic artists, I would put it on the list, but not near the top. ;)

Ah but starting a race would be a waste of time, because in a practise you could do a time, then go into the pits and adjust the car there and then. Your method (the existing way) would require menu loading and then reloading of the track, MUCH more time wasted. PD could EASILY add practise and qualifying options, GT3 had qualifying! But I agree that there ARE indeed more pressing matters for PD to rectify.

I wouldn't trust them to just let you go into the pits and change something though.

I have been playing F1 2010 for a week or two now because GT5 was boring me to tears. Anyway after following this thread for a couple of days I decided to give it another run last night. I sold a few cars and bought an LP670-SV because I figured I might as well drive an exciting car to give the game a chance to impress me again.

I hate to say, but I was so underwhelmed its not funny. I figured a quick lap of the Nordschleife might restore my faith in GT5 but I was so bored I didn't even make it through a whole lap. Yeah the physics still feel pretty good but the experience is just so bland. The sound is so dull and sterile in comparison to F1 2010 and the whole thing just feels sedated.

So sadly, I don't think GT5 will be getting much game time in the future, what with F1 2011 on the horizon and other releases coming up like NASCAR 2011, Shift 2 and Dirt 3 (was never a fan of Dirt 2 or Shift but hey, you never know).

In fact, it might even be time to trade the PS3 for an Xbox with the pending release of Forza 4...

More than qualifying, it's free practice before the race that absolutely needs to be in.
It's necessary to properly tune the car for a specific race.

That's cool and all, however, from what I can tell, one of the reasons for disappointment I think I've read the most around here is the lack of a racing feel, a competitive spirit, so to speak.
Well, maybe it's just me, but I hear complaints about everything and... well, everything. Even that the crawl of the competitors in the loading screens glitches many times in the last few seconds of loading! Talk about whining.

I don't think the "competitive" thing is the biggest complaint, unless you're gravitating to those threads, but I will admit that it's one of the numerous things that PD really could stand to look at. However, I don't think it's as broken as most people are getting carried away about. I like competitive racing, and I'm still having a blast with it. I know it's beneath some of you to take a lesser performer against the bots. Even as some of these very same folk will do that very thing online against living humans, go figure. Hypocrisy? Well, this is the human race we're dealing with...

For others, it's the sound that matters. A big roaring engine automatically makes the racing feel more real. One guy above lied about the Ferraris sounding like vacuum cleaners. I have a Toyota Supra MkIII, and it really does sound a bit like a vacuum cleaner. So does a relative's Sentra and 240SX. And no Ferrari in this game sounds anything like them. But for some folk, off sound = bad completely wrong sound = bad physics. And unfortunately, another human characteristic is perception is reality. You can talk all day long about various factors GT5 does right, and they'll plug their ears at you.

Some people can't stand that the Standard cars even exist, and they get really cranky if anyone dares to like them.

Heck, I could type all night about all the "mortal" flaws in GT5, such as the interlacing flaw in the car line-up crawl before the race. But I have to ask why people will give themselves ulcers playing a game they can't stand, come here to post about it constantly, and even pretend that they're fed up and are leaving GT Planet and Gran Turismo forever. Then sometimes hours later, they're posting about something they hated about their last race. ;) And of course it's not like we haven't heard it... what, a thousand times already?

Basically, it's the bratty, snotty childishness and rudeness that gets old. And the two faced fib posting. Wanting to sway our opinion on some issue is one thing. But being tards day in and out, that really needs to stop. I know this is a bit OT but I think this needs to be repeated, because it's infecting the boards and causing a lot of bad feelings.

To the point though, obviously there's a wide dichotomy between two divergent groups. You really can't say definitively that there's no competitive spirit or good racing to be had in GT5 offline, because many of us are enjoying just that. I am, and I'm turning my nose up at a lot of racing games that aren't that dissimilar. Forxza, previous GTs, games I admire like Live For Speed. Saying that GT isn't very good because a certain group doesn't find it competitive is a false premise. And that's also very different from saying GT5 could use more work.

I know that's how you feel. But you obviously aren't everyone. I know we as humans tend to ascribe our experiences to everyone, but I'm trying to keep from doing that. Keeping the discussion to what is solid and valid would go a long way to getting the boards back on track, and keeping unnecessary arguments from erupting.

This is just a guess, but... I think Kaz just cares about the money. Sorry, I don't see him (or any other company) actually 'caring' about their customers. It's just a way to make money, if you make them feel that way.
This is another point where I disagree. I see this very thing in the spirit of developers like Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, United Front Games, and yes, Polyphony Digital. To be sure, I can say that most companies don't inspire these kinds of feelings, especially those under the umbrella of Microsoft or Electronic Arts, as I can imagine they have managers and accountants breathing down their necks a lot.

I just don't feel much ingenuity coming from GT5, might be the reason why I kinda stopped in believing Kaz was that kind of person. That and the fact that I can't see the touch of a perfectionist like he's always made out to be in the game, either.
Well, then tell me where you see "genius" in any developer. I see it in groups like I listed above. Now admittedly, GT5 is a little schitzo, but you have a number of people remarking routinely about one thing or another which is simply brilliant about GT5. It's the genius which is in GT5 which has me coming back, and not firing up another racer which might have incredible livery painting and extensive modification. And of course, to be brilliant, someone had to make it that way.

I know some of you secretly want the thread title changed to "Why we hate GT5 (and Kaz too!)." But if you would approach this crazy game, and us, as if you want to engage people in a dialog which will fuel positive changes, it would be such a nice change in the weather here. Heck, there's nothing wrong with saying, "Man, I really don't like the XP system."

Or "Jeepers, cars are too expensive. I wish Kaz would fix the economy, not just dump a bucket of credits in our laps once every two weeks in Special Events."

Or "I wish we could win prize cars more than once."

Or "Is it just me, or is a paint shop without any of its own paint kind of messed up?"

Or "I just played the Formula Truck demo, and the racing was so competitive! Kaz, could you tweak the bots a bit more to give us racing like that?"

Or "Could we pleeeeeeaaase have more A-Spec events, and some new tracks in single player?"

Not "What the flock was Kaz thinking when he made this piece of road kill! You people are all hamsters for liking this piece of tar! And the Standards all SOCK!"

Just a thought. ;)

In keeping with the saying "What's old is new again" we're actually looking at RacePro to give us our something "new and different" fix since we're all FM3'ed out, we've played the FM3 so much we damned near burned the label off, lol. We are aware the RacePro is bug ridden but the few of us that actually have it say once the racing starts it's a blast. I didn't check it out, but for 17 bucks now I said what the hell and ordered it. Should be here tomorrow or Monday.
I think that you play FM3 so much maybe part of your problem. There is only so much you can do with a racing game leaning toward a sim. This is why most racing games including F1 2010 (Dirt series) is leaning more toward arcade than simulation.

As far as Race Pro which is like PC Race On, it's a good sim but that's it. It's suffers a lot in presentation. The single player is very dull compared to Gt5 and Forza 3. Hardcore sims just doesn't appeal to most console gamer as Race Pro is clearly evidence of this.

CM even admit this. CM was trying to simulate the actual life of a F1 driver and not the actual F1 car physics.

Have you played the game? With aids off, the physics feel awesome. Yes, Codemasters were trying to simulate the life of an F1 driver. They were also trying to simulate the physics of F1 cars, and they did a pretty good job of it.

Just a thought.

Your "thought" on how closet haters should broach the subject of their disappointment is in essence, saying the exact same thing as the rhetoric you're against. The only difference is, what you suggest has a "pretty please with a cherry on top".

Polyphony is a big, tough company. If people on GTPlanet "call them names", they don't care. You certainly don't need to waltz your sycophantic self into a DISAPPOINTMENT thread to defend them.

machschnel, I think my entire post went completely over your head. I'm sure the folk at PD know how to ignore worthless posters. ;)

I'm talking about those of us who are tired of the rude, thoughtless tards here who we would rather punch in the face in real life than spend ten seconds with.

I don't like putting people on Ignore. My list is empty. I'm hoping that most of the whiners here will grow up and quit acting all gangsta-like. But seeing how the entire world is beginning to catch fire from the actions of easily led useful idiots whipped into a frenzy, I'm beginning to lose hope in that civilization thing.

Lol for peeps who got so much gripe with GT5 you sure play it a lot & have already spent countless hours playing it. Just be real, you love it.

facepalm

MEMO to Sony: Scrap GT6

There I whined. :D Please talk down to me from your high pedestal.

I have to ask why people will give themselves ulcers playing a game they can't stand, come here to post about it constantly, and even pretend that they're fed up and are leaving GT Planet and Gran Turismo forever. Then sometimes hours later, they're posting about something they hated about their last race. ;) And of course it's not like we haven't heard it... what, a thousand times already?

I might have an idea why this is the case. I think GT5 simply hit that unfortunate mid-level of quality which keeps people on playing, but annoys them at the same time. That leads to frustration with many people, and frustration makes them vent on the forums.

I agree that a lot of people exaggerate things. But why is that? What they say is a bit of fact fueled by a lot of disappointment. Calling these people out because of taking their words literally therefore is wrong. They're not all children. They're not all bratty, snotty and rude.

I bet that if you were to sit down with them in person, have a beer and a nice chat about GT5, you would find you understand the position of 90 out of 100 people. What those people post here are just snippets of their experiences. Judging them as a whole by that is hardly fair. Of course there are trolls as well, but they are in the minority.

Well I guys I can now say that my interest in the game has completely fallen off. The group I race with is COMPLETELY turned off with the game. Guys who race in real life (not any Indy guys or anything lol but guys with alot more knowledge and real life track time than I could ever dream about and some guys who work with certain companies in one capacity or another) just feel the game is "wrong". I tried hard to keep the game alive with the group but it's gotten to the point where some have outright hatred for it. This coupled with the fact that I'm just not getting the "umph" feeling from the game has led this to be a dust collector.

We have one NASCAR race left with the game Monday and this game will, in all intent and purposes, be dead. I, and probably a few others, will most likely be checking on the progress of updates but I think it's over now. Furthermore, I just don't have the drive to play it myself. My last hope for it died this Saturday when I participated in a race that was organized here and it was a huge disappointment. I wasn't the only one who felt that I might add. I'm very disappointed now, I was looking for this game to be the one to put the others on the shelf, now it seems to be the first one to the shelf.

In keeping with the saying "What's old is new again" we're actually looking at RacePro to give us our something "new and different" fix since we're all FM3'ed out, we've played the FM3 so much we damned near burned the label off, lol. Well I hope during the months to come GT5 gets patched to where it's supposed to be and we can come back to great racing, but until then I guess it's adios. I'll still come through to check some threads, especially the multiscreen thread. But I don't think it's necessary for me to debate the title with anyone anymore since I'll probably not actively playing it. If I do play then I'll debate ,but if I sell or cease then what's the point.

Good luck to all.

Sadly, I am with you. I don't even bother playing anymore. I will still come here to read threads and the check when the updates/patches/dlc happen that cater to my needs. Til then, I will put my G27 to use in F1 2010. F1 2011 will be out before GT6 so I will still get my money's worth out of a wheel I bought just for GT5.

When GT6 does release, I don't intend on getting it at midnight like I did with GT5. I will wait several months until I see reviews and comments. If its not an upgrade from GT4, I don't want it either. PD, you guys need to pull it together. You lost your spunk.

How could anybody care about somebody wanting GT to change when what's made it so great for all these years is the fact it's stayed true to itself and changed as little as possible.

I have to disagree. They've changed GT5 so much since it's launch all in an attempt to make us play it the way THEY want us to play not the way WE want to play.

Why should I have to grind for days so as to be able to afford 1 expensive car?

Some people like grinding the same track over and over to collect more money. I say some people like it. I don't know anyone who does but some of the posts in here lead me to that conclusion.

I don't. I want to be able to select a car for a race without having to run 50 or 60 times round the same track to "qualify" myself for the honour of doing that particular race.

I spend enough time working in real life. When a game starts becoming work instead of fun then it's time to take the disc out of the console.

When GT6 does release, I don't intend on getting it at midnight like I did with GT5. I will wait several months until I see reviews and comments.

I agree. I've queued up outside Game in a lonely cold shopping centre for each version since GT2 so that I could play the game as soon as possible. That's because I knew that the gaming experience was going to be so much better than the last one. This one has left me feeling let down. I just wish I still had a PS2 so that I could go back to GT4.

useful idiots

You certainly are tenacious, although I'd say you're more accurately described as... banned.

Well, maybe it's just me, but I hear complaints about everything and... well, everything. Even that the crawl of the competitors in the loading screens glitches many times in the last few seconds of loading! Talk about whining.
As far as reasons for stopping playing the game goes, I think this is the one I've heard the most. Maybe not for overall complaints, but then again, I don't keep track of them all. Do you?

I don't think the "competitive" thing is the biggest complaint, unless you're gravitating to those threads, but I will admit that it's one of the numerous things that PD really could stand to look at. However, I don't think it's as broken as most people are getting carried away about. I like competitive racing, and I'm still having a blast with it. I know it's beneath some of you to take a lesser performer against the bots. Even as some of these very same folk will do that very thing online against living humans, go figure. Hypocrisy? Well, this is the human race we're dealing with...
It's not about the compteitiveness. I can drive the most underpowered car and it gets challenging, but I don't get a feeling of actually racing. It's a bit hard to explain, but basically, in a race, you have to incorporate strategy, defend your position, attack others' position and so on.
In GT5, you have to lap fastest to win. That's the difference. The fact that the AI is painfully slow just adds to that.

Yeah, just as a lot of people can talk about what goes wrong with GT5 (the racing, for example) and the GT defenders will plug their ears, as well. Doesn't really change a thing.
I agree that not all cars sound like vacuum cleaners, though. But, overall, I doubt that there's anyone disagreeing that the sound isn't too great for most cars. That's all I'm saying on that matter. Other games get that done a lot better and I'd like to see GT5 catch up in that regard. Not that important to me, though.

Some people can't stand that the Standard cars even exist, and they get really cranky if anyone dares to like them.
And people get cranky because people dislike them just as much. To some of us, cars that lack features they deem important are a waste of time, first and foremost. But I already have been discussing this over and over and over, so I won't go there again.

For the 'heard it a thousand times' bit: That's the same with the GT lovers & defenders and with the guys complaining about complainers. I could've sworn I've read most of your post more than once as well...
You know, if the points the 'complainers' are making are met with the same points by the 'defenders' time and time again (valid or otherwise), what do you expect?

Me, for example, I've put the game aside. There wasn't much palytime to be lost, anyways. I'm primarily spending my time in the off-topic parts of GTPLanet now, in the Shift board and stroll aroudn here a little, mostly because I'm at work and bored. Can't tell you about other people, though. I personally think it's because there's little alternative to GT5 and that it has already been payed, so people might as well play it when bored. I can only guess, though.

Dunno, as far as I can tell, the whole 'bad attitude' stuff isn't realated to liking GT5 or disliking it. I've seen just as many post that seemed to lack a positive attitude in general from the anti-GT-guys as well as the pro-GT-faction.

As stated above, it's not about being competitive. And, as I said, it's great that you some folks get the feeling of an actual race out of it. I don't. And I can't understand what you guys are doing to magically turn it into a racing experience where the AI is actually racing you, not just lapping the same track as you.
Maybe I just have a different understanding of what racing is than you do.

You're really getting a bit hung up on the fact that I dind't add an 'in my opinion' after the post, right? :indiff:

This is another point where I disagree. I see this very thing in the spirit of developers like Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, United Front Games, and yes, Polyphony Digital. To be sure, I can say that most companies don't inspire these kinds of feelings, especially those under the umbrella of Microsoft or Electronic Arts, as I can imagine they have managers and accountants breathing down their necks a lot.
What kind of feelings? I've very, very rarely felt anything special when playing a game. A feeling of the developer not doing it for money, you mean? One of the very, very few games I got that feeling from that was actually good was World of Goo. Because it was basically free.
If someone's makign a game and selling it at 60$, sorry, I hardly believe they're doing it for the sake of bringing cool games to the people. They may have started at that point, but that's hardly the case with any major developer any more.

What I associate with an ingenious game is, for example, developing the formula of a franchise further. Or being revolutionary. You know, advancing a whole genre and stuff like that. Note that a game doesn't need that 'genius' feeling to it for me to consider it good.
But, sticking to the same formula you have used for years, taking steps back here and there, even, that's not genius, in my book. Neither is advancing things like graphics and physics. That's 'scaling with the hardware available'. And aside from said 'scaling', I don't think GT has advanced a lot from GT4 to GT5, if at all.

I know some of you secretly want the thread title changed to "Why we hate GT5 (and Kaz too!)." But if you would approach this crazy game, and us, as if you want to engage people in a dialog which will fuel positive changes, it would be such a nice change in the weather here. Or "I just played the Formula Truck demo, and the racing was so competitive! Kaz, could you tweak the bots a bit more to give us racing like that?"

Not "What the flock was Kaz thinking when he made this piece of road kill! You people are all hamsters for liking this piece of tar! And the Standards all SOCK!"

Just a thought. ;)
You know... As I said, it's not only the complainers that are not palying nice.
"Man, I really don't like the XP system."
"STFU kid, Kaz knows best, he's a genius and never wrong with anything!"
So, yeah, if anything, start preaching to both sides to play nice.

And reading this:

You might want to reconsider that condescending attitude of yours before preaching to others about their general tone.
Reeks of hypocrisy otherwise. You know, like it's just a reason to shut people up if you can't actually argue their points.

For me the single player is nothing more than a means to an end. Trying to get all the cars for multiplayer. I hear the A.I. is supposed to be between FM3 and GT5 so I don't know. But I'm just in it, and for the most part when it comes to all racing games, for the multiplayer.

Isn't it sad that they couldn't even do the scaling right? The premiums got scaled to the peak of Mount Olympus while the standards, track surroundings, spectators and Autumn Ring got promoted from Hades to Medusa's Lair.

Before anyone says I should concentrate on the track, yeah, I like to look at trees when I'm driving in GT5. I don't get to do that in real life.

I wouldn't they they couldn't get it right. There are a few examples that show they could do it, but didn't do it.
Whether that makes matters better or worse, though...

And, yeah, since someone's bound to come up with the argument that they didn't have enough time:
If you can't make the assets look as nice as other companies can (in a third of the time, to boot), you're doing it wrong (in my opinion).

You certainly are tenacious, although I'd say you're more accurately described as... banned.

I don't think that would happen.
I don't like his attitude towards 3rd world country's though.

On topic. I'm disappointed have been for awhile.
Leaderboards put the nail in for me.

Here's a question for you all....

Would you buy a soccer game if it was visually stunning, every blade of grass exquisitely modeled, every player photo realistic, every stadium modeled so well, you couldn't tell if it was a game or a live broadcast...?

Would you buy it if every player's moves were motion captured, and once again, looking at replays, you couldn't tell if you were watching TV or a game...?

BUT...

There were no RULES of soccer in the game? Any player can pick up the ball and run it into the net, AND THE GOAL COUNTS! Any player can tackle any other player with a rugby tackle, and drag him to the ground? Plus maybe get in a good headbutt or two, and the ref simply ignores it all...

This is how I feel racing games have gone. Sure, they LOOK like racing. The driving physics are pretty good. The tracks get exquisite attention and so do the cars (or at least, SOME of them!). But, once placed on a race track, the game developer walks away and says 'I've done MY job... have at it!' and there goes the racing, flushed down the toilet of neglect.

No-one would tolerate a soccer game where the rules of soccer are ignored completely. No-one would play a baseball game, or American football, or golf, if, while it LOOKED like the sport, the rules of the sport got ignored COMPLETELY. No-one would excuse the soccer game by calling it the 'Ultimate ball kicking' simulator so as to bypass the fact that YOU CAN'T PLAY SOCCER with it.

But we do... (or some of us, at least!)

We don't buy this game to 'drive'. There's nowhere to drive TO. There's no open countryside, there's no cities with traffic and all the stuff of REAL driving. Everything takes place on race tracks. With races between cars. It's a racing game, for Pete's sake! Trouble is, they forgot to put in the rules of racing...

So what, exactly, does that 'sim'? In my opinion, NOTHING.

Until that game enforces the rules of soccer, it is still just a lousy game, no matter HOW much it looks like the sport. And so is GT5.

That would be possible. The name would be
FA 5: The Real Bribery Simulator (Martin Atkinson Edition)

👍 Seriously. A big 👍. That sums the whole deal up pretty nicely. It hits one of the biggest reasons for my personal disappointment sqaure on the hat. My own, very personal disappointment with which's reason nobody has to agree, by the way.

I've read or watched an interview regarding sandboxy games. I think it was around the time of GTA 4's release. That guy said (basically):
"A game lifes by its limitations. Allowing the palyer to do whatever he feels like at any given time isn't going to make the game any good."
And I think that that's true. I mean... Would Super Mario have been any good if it gave you the choice to just fly through every level, without ever having to notice the existence of any kind of obstacle?

The main problem GT5 has is the amount of people willing to put up with what is a substandard (by PDs and GTs) standards game. Selfish people who can't see the hypocrisy and irony in complaining about people complaining!! GT5 will never improve enough with these people excusing every broken aspect of GT5s gameplay.
