When I saw this topic I just went "What!?". I never saw this coming before, I want to see a Maserati SUV and then say it was built off of a Jeep(I know a lot of people who aren't into cars).

Exactly what I said when I saw it on MotorAuthority.

Oh deary dear, here comes fiat to screw up things...

Albeit from expensive SUVs being an interesting view on the street, I fancy the sporty aura of the Maseratis, so seeing a Maserati branded SUV would be at least weird to begin with.

For the record, I don't like the X5M and X6M super SUVs so it's just a matter of personal preference.

Maserati SUV? I vote for Meh.

Maserati SUV? I never thought those two words would be in the same sentence. The question is, will it actually work offroad? SUV's that don't go offroad are pointless and that's precisely why I don't like the BMW X-cars. As long as this Maserati SUV can go offroad then it should be alright. I read in a car magazine that Alfa-Romeo are doing a Jeep-based SUV as well.

Because Porsche has an SUV based on a Volkswagen.

This x10

The Jeep can get into the 40k price range.... so a $70-80k Maserati with a re-tuned suspension, Italian V8 and a very very well appointed interior isn't too far off the beat.

This will keep Ferrari from making one I hope. Im sure that there are a few Ferrari owners that would like an SUV that wont buy a Porsche.

Besides, how many other Italian SUVs are there?

It makes sense that they would. Everybody else is getting into the luxury CUV game, so why not Chrysler/Fiat? I'm sure they could sell quite a few with a Maserati badge in the US. And with Ferrari power, things could get pretty awesome.

I just hope they don't screw it up and ruin the Maserati badge. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Chrysler found a way to get in on this and built a piece of junk that tarnished the Maserati reputation.

What has me wondering is if its on the extended GC platform (aka durango) or the regular platform. If it uses the extended version then this could be a escalade competitor.

Otherwise, I'm not one to reject it. No one can really dispute the sales success that the Cayenne and X5 have been, and I'm fairly sure that even if Maserati only sell a couple thousand a year, they'll still make money.

I'd be willing to bet it'll share the chassis and the Quadradrive-II system with the Jeep, but that'll be about it. I'd bank on a 5.0L Ferrari/Maserati V8, a RWD bias with the torque split, 20" wheels to start, and a rather large abundance of hand-stitched leather. Not a terrible thing.

Between the Quattroporte, Gran Turismo and this... I'd say its a round portfolio for Fiat's luxury performance marques. No need for a Ferrari or Alfa SUV.

I won't buy one even if I had the money to afford one.
But there's no italian suv, so Alfa Romeo and Maserati have got the brand to sell one.

If anyone could pull off, I think Maserati can as long as the car retains some sportiness and has the looks (& sound) to flow with the rest of their line up which have all been fantastic cars.

any failure won't be on Fiat's part, it'd probably be the Chrysler Curse, instead.

I'm sure it will look awesome, but a Maserati badged Jeep is solely for those people with very deep pockets who want to announce to the world that they're rich bastards. I mean, $200k for the Maserati SUV...or $40k for the Jeep. It's like buying a Porsche Cheyenne instead of the Toureg....Or the Escalade....although, with Jeep behind it, The Maserati will probably be the second most off-road capable luxury SUV second only to Land Rover.

I do wonder if they'll use Maserati's trademark Ferrari V8 in it, though.

First off, Maserati won't sale any SUV for $200K. We're not talking about a Peking-to-Paris type vehicle. Maserati's generally stay in the low $100K's to avoid sales competition with Ferrari, and while a SUV wouldn't be actually competing, it also wouldn't do well against the Quattroporte if it was marked to the same price as a F430.

Second, they would use the V8 by nature. They have been using only V8s since 1998 as the last secondary engine was a V6 Biturbo. Since then, only a V12 has been placed in their cars once, ala the MC12.

Which makes it interesting: Will it be the Chrysler HEMI or the Maser V8 under the bonnet? Because, y'know, if they ARE interchangeable...

Well...Maserati doesn't supply their own engines anymore. I don't think they have since they've been owned by Ferrari/Fiat.

One thing about Fiat, I've noticed, is that they don't use the same engine for mulitple cars. The 458,, 599, 612, Enzo and California use a different engine and none of those engines are used in Maseratis or Fiats or by any other car make they own. That means a Maserati SUV would probably have a unique engine, but it'd probably be an Italian engine in an italian car. The design would be Jeep, but it's front end, lights, engine and interior would be all Maserati.

It's going to be a Maserati V8, most likely the 4.7L V8 if I were to guess.

Maserati's engines are all a joint-development with Ferrari under their Tipo Series division as only they use the 4.2 & 4.7 liter engines.

Maserati have been sellout whores for years anyway. Who cares if they put a fishmouth and a HUGE c-pillar on a Jeep Cherokee? It can't be uglier than a Cayenne...

I don't see a problem here. It makes sense to me, I'd

The Cayenne is Porsche's best seller and generates enough profit to fund the fun cars.

I think if Maserati throws up a 4.7L V8 for the SUV, it's going to need forced induction. Without it, it's week to the X5 and X6, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, etc.

The Maserati SUV would be befitting if the Ferrari built cross-plane crank V8 is under the hood. A HEMI would seem out of place.
