Canadian women now 3 nil against South Africa.

And quite an upset in the women's beach volleyball.

Yeah I'm watching the beach volleyball right now on PS3, good match. Archery is also pretty good, South Korea insanely great at it and about to face USA.

USA Men's Archery advances to gold medal match, and US Women just kicked off.

I know I set up a thread on Olympic Basketball, but... oh, boy. Now Croatia ahead of the USA in Women's Basketball. 23-21 in favor of Croatia with 3:45 left in the first half. Wow! Sloppy start leading to both teams just lighting it up offensively.

Team GB's women in action in the football now against Cameroon.

US Women up 1-nil at halftime thanks to a beautiful strike from Megan Rapinoe, 25 yards out. Colombia are playing quite a dirty game, Abby Wambach has been elbowed in the mouth intentionally (much to Brandi Chastain's chagrin) and right before the half a Colombian player held the ball between her feet on the ground while a teammates shoved American players.

Just some of my thoughts about the opening ceremony.

Gee I don't know, there was some great moments and ideas, but it felt like a jumbled mixture. Lost track of any theme.

The first 1/2 hour - 40 minutes perhaps, was the best. The story that started with the 'hobbits of the shire' version of England and then the transformation to the industrial revolution through to the making of the ring and joining with the others was the best worked out part. Set the bar high (too high perhaps). That's the sort of grand spectacle I want to have WOW me every 4 years at an opening ceremony. The whole arena being transformed from the shire into bleak landscape was very well done. The chimneys rising and the factory equipment coming out of the ground all really good. Oddly showing the bad side of society's transformation as much as any improvement, good to have a social comment to make, but is this the place?

But then on, odd things. Like really, a featured segment of the NHS with some sick kids in hospital beds?? The Australian commentators dropped their normal sycophantic 'reading off the notes' by actually questioning what they were seeing.

I mean the idea that was in there of a little kid reading a book that then starts to show some of the creations of UK writers makes sense, but then it went back to the NHS storyline which ended with a big baby in bed, sort of a large doll head and a rippling bed-sheet. That just looked odd.

The Mr Bean segment was great, the first time that there's been a genuinely funny comedy moment in an opening ceremony.

The James Bond with the Queen segment started strong, but then became a helicopter flight and a poorly carried out gag where she was supposed to jump out and parachute before James Bond. The real life parachuters never headed into the stadium so then there was a poor tie-in to the Queen's arrival where she and prince Phillip walked to their seats with no acknowledgment of the footage we'd just seen There was never going to be a 'pay off' to the joke, so it wasn't really worth doing in the first place = my opinion.

There was another segment, 2 young people out on the town, through the decades with the different songs of the times. But it revolved around him trying to return her mobile phone?? There was status updates from the group of friends as they travelled through the 60's and 70's ??? It was poorly thought out and felt like an ad for a mobile phone company. Then the house lifts up and inside is the guy who invented the internet. HEy wHat???

So lots of different stuff, fireworks were good.

Also another point: At the end I found it odd that there was no final person of note being the one to lite the cauldron.

This. I enjoyed the music and the spectacle of some of the sections but it was very dis-jointed and didn't follow a 'story' despite starting with a brilliant one. I think Boyle should have stuck to the timeline idea myself. But that's what you get with him, he's never been afraid to do something a bit....mad.

US Men's archery currently competing for the gold against Italy after upsetting the favorite, South Korea. Much talk about the Colombian player who punched Wambach getting a retrospective red card from FIFA.

....XsnipX.... but you'd expect better from a doc.

Yes. No bedside manners at all.

And here you go...

I'll do some pictures first...

All in all, a great day out, and for a tenner each, a bargain!

Nice job. 👍

You don't want to miss the Brazil/Mauritius match then. :)

In womens footie the US/Columbia match is turning into a bit of a brawl.

And Serena Williams is trouncing Jankovic.

Cochrane is out of the 400 m Free.

Women's basketball is hectic!

Also - China guns down the first Gold Medal.

Team GB womens football team are doing very well! 2 nil up v Cameroon! :)

Italy beat USA in the Archery. They needed a 10 with the last arrow and got it.

I'm liking this sport. It's intense.

Wambach! 2-nil, on to the quarterfinals for the Americans :). That must have been rewarding for Abby, making that bad sport who hit her look stupid.

Abby sizzles one off the bar, they're just asserting their dominance now.

Carli! 3-nil, perfect run and strike.

'wambach'!!??...what does that mean??

So many exciting events going on . . . Ulcermania!

Press conference now on about Cochrane; team accepts decision, and decides to go on stronger with the 1500. Shame about Cochrane, bit of a disappointment for Canada.
IMO - it was a good appeal. I used to be a swim judge when younger (though mostly into syncro-swim c'ships) and with whatever limited experience I have I viewed it as a good start, and not a false one. The guy just went a lot further on that take-off; it only looked like a false start.

MUSC4EVER
'wambach'!!??...what does that mean??

It's a last name/surname...it doesn't have to mean anything.

Oh ok..its an athletes surname!!

Yeah, Abby Wambach is our best (arguably) women's soccer/football player.

I watched this aswell, very exciting game to watch.

I missed the Archery Gold Medal match :(

Because I was watching Fencing. I have to say that the stage they set up makes for an exciting and extremely intensifying atmosphere; turning off all the lights except for the stage and big colours lighting up the stage when someone scores. The extended play in semi-finals was very nice to watch. Italy made a 3-point comeback and took the extended round.

Phelps is on in a few minutes.

Did anyone else find it funny that the industrial revolution piece had basically hundreds of people looting the stadium?

Just want to give a mention to Hannah Miley..she is in the 400m individual medley swimming final and she is our only hope of a medal on opening day after the cycling dissapointment earlier...she is a genuine medal contender and thats on at about 8pm..

Pretty miffed about the cycling, GB had already said they couldn't assume any help from any other nation and yet that's what they appeared to do.

Murray/Murray lost in the doubles, that was rather poor too.

When does Murray play Wawrinka in the singles?..i assume its tomorrow..Federer is through to the next round, he beat Falla 2 two sets to one earlier..

Phelps 4th, Lochte wins the gold.

Whats happened to Phelps in the last four years? has he been injured??

Too much Subway. Glad Lochte won. Was pulling for him. I'll watch the swimming later on.

Watching the March of Nations now. Did you see that Albanian chick? Dem thighs.

On now.

And a new World Record.

He's just past his prime. I'm just hoping he can win one or two golds and get the three medals, because he is definitely deserving of the title "Greatest Olympian Ever."

She finished 5th! :indiff:..new world record though!
