That was extraordinary stuff from Ye Shiwen. Big turnaround to win by miles, smash the WR, and she's only 16 years old. china seem to be starting where they left off in Beijing with these medals being won.


Shame that Miley didn't get anything though.

I know that but its so ignorant ("dance moves by Abraham Lincon") I cant get my head round it!
 
Good showing by us there in the 4X400 relay freestyle, finishing 5th..around 4secs behind 1st place aussies!

That's one of the unpredictables in IM; one may lag in the backstroke then make up time in the freestyle.

Great matches going on now between Czech Rep. and Austria (Women's Beach Volleyball) as well as the indoor US/KOR match - stunning beauties giving it their all.
 
I think that female announcer is 4 feet tall.

I have to update my Discus predictions because I thought Alekna retired. I'll say he comes in 3rd. This is definitely his last games.

Personally, as I have been competing in times past and currently teach and coach swimming, I wasn't too surprised that the Chinese girl surged ahead at the 400 IM event.

400 IM events is always a tricky event to compete well in, even to win in against good swimmers. Its all down to how 8 swimmers swim each different strokes at the pace that they have decided before the race and how they feel on the day.

The Chinese girl strongest stroke seems to be freestyle at that point, however I suspect it was the strokes before it that lead up to her eventually taking the No.1 spot as she may have conserved her energy for the final 100 metres sprint to win the race. For a 16 year old to do that time in the Olympics.... Stunning! But she didn't come from nowhere as she was still in the top 3 swimmers during that race before the final 100 metres.

You do have to remember that when it comes to the last 100 metres or the last 50 metres freestyle of the 400 IM, swimmers often either tense up a lot and waste a lot of energy or just relax and swim out of their skin. She just lucked out at that time and managed to relax and swim out of her skin.

It was awesome to see that at the time.

Really sad about Hannah Miley coming 5th, however I suspect she still swam extremely well for her ability and when it comes to such a difficult event as that, you have to take what you can.
 
Perhaps a little behind here (but so is the coverage, not my fault)... The Opening Ceremony... Much like the City fans when they first saw the Posman in that UEFA Cup Match..

I'm still watching too. 4 hours worth, you know. Isn't it a little faux pas to have flags of sovereign nations displayed at different heights? So much for the spiral tree path thingy.

It's a joke, or more like someone taking their opinion to the extreme on purpose just to get read and for the shock factor.

Hmm it certainly came across as a shock and got the read from me at least.

Hopefully GB will get a medal tomorrow in something or other.
 
Woman's basketball is currently on here and Australia are comfortably beating Team GB 39-26

But this is the Olympics thread, the F1 thread doesn't need spoiler tags in it. And the events aren't as high-profile either, spoilers won't bother people too much. It's only really the 100 metre final you really don't want spoiled, and it would be pretty hard to avoid hearing the result of it anyway.

That Chinese athlete that won the medley, wow, last 100 metre's were out of this world, went about 2.5 seconds faster then the World Record in that section, was 1.5 down, finished 1.0 up IIRC.

Ugh. I think someone needs to go over to London and remind the Australian commentators what the Olympics are all about. Some of them seem to think that you are only representing your country when you are winning medals, and that if you aren't winning medals, you're wasting a spot on the team that could have been taken by someone who would win medals. They pile expectations and pressure on our athletes, and won't hesitate to criticise if they fail to live up to the expected standard.

Is this something that all commentators do, or just ours?
