It was a freak injury. I'm sure a lot of pitchers do what he does and even if they don't, he's done this for so many years before every game. If he just started doing this last week you'd have a point but since he started this years ago there's no argument.

Sorry i've never heard of them doing that before, so it suprised me that's all. however it was a freak injury and it couldn't have happend to a better closer than Rivera.
 
Mo has been shagging balls during BP for about 20 years as his form of conditioning. A freak accident.
 
Okay all i'm saying is i've never heard of pitchers shagging fly balls before a game. so i'm saying it shocked me thats all.

I Saw that. Why the best closer in baseball, trying to catch fly balls?? this is going to be a huge blow to the yankees bullpen. their bullpen isn't as potent as it was in the past and now with Rivera gone and his career most likely finished. this is going to be a longer season for the Yankees.

He was drafted as a CF,crazy weird,freak accident. Plenty of pitchers shag flys in the outfield to warm up. I used to watch mariano do it in BP when he was in the minors. Im depressed about it,he is such a good person (way more righteous than tebow). His post interview about it was heartbreaking.
Its been a rough week for NY. Amare goes down,Mariano goes down,Adam Yauch from beastie boys passed away today WTF

Giants couldn't catch a damn break during the Marlins series.. Terrible call in the 9th screwed Theriot of a double. And now we lose our best hitter for a month and a half.
 
Probably going to get wasted by the Mets today. We've got a serious problem right now with hitting balls directly to a fielder for an easy out. Making contact = good, but in the wrong damn places. :yuck:

We were rocking the Astros' shooting star throwback uniforms tonight as part of our Throwback Friday home games this year. Winless in the Colt .45 uniforms (those beautiful uniforms)... how did we do tonight? José Altuve let an infield ball bounce to set up a double play in the 9th Inning as Brett Myers was closing. We won 5-4! Nine hits for HOU and eight for STL. Two errors on St. Louis and just one for Houston. Lucas Harrell won for Houston with a Brett Myers Save. Kyle Lohse picked up the loss for St. Louis.


Elsewhere from games completed as of this post...

* It was 5-4 as Arizona took down the Mets on the road. Ziegler (ARI) won with a Putz Save, and Rauch (PHI) lost. Smile, R1600Turbo. Your boys won!

* The Los Angeles Dodgers failed 5-4 at the Chicago Cubs.

* Cleveland won at home 6-3 against Texas. Gomez won for CLE along with a Perez Save. Lewis was the loser for Texas.

* Another 5-4. This time- Detroit winning at home over the Chicago White Sox. Former Astros, José Valverde picked up the win for DET as Thornton lost for CHW.

* Tampa Bay is tough to beat at their dull indoor ballpark. Ask the Oakland Athletics how it feels to lose 7-2 at "The Trop."

* The Kansas City Royals FINALLY won at home on Thursday night. Could they get a winning streak going? No. The New York Yankees won 6-2 and made KC experience that losing feeling yet again. Coming into tonight, the Royals have the second-worst record in the AL Central. Only the Minnesota Twins have a worse record with only a 6-18 record heading into their (MIN) matchup at Seattle.


And for you Sunday Night Baseball watchers... how about some National League love for once? It's Philadelphia at Washington on Sunday Night.

My brother's team is the Cardinals so I was looking forward to this set especially :) . Over here they only show 1 random game during the weekdays (when I'm at work) and none on the weekend, so we're a bit detached in Australia, but I'll be able to watch the last Astros vs Cardinals game early Monday morning (before work :D) as it's the free game of the day on the MLB phone app (It also lets me listen to any game via internet radio).
I can't get/buy baseball access any other realistic way as it's a U.S & Canada licensing lockdown apart from the MLB app and the random games here.

Woot Woot! no luck for the angels while the Blue Jays have sort of found the clicking point. and yes Bautista hit his 5th over the fence.
 
The Phils just can't seem to get over .500 this season, dropping their fourth extra inning game (of four played) of the season last night to the Expos Nationals. Some poor officiating from the three-man umpire crew didn't help any.


Meh.
 
We set a team record for most 1-run losses this year and it looks like we're going to add another one to this list. :rolleyes:
 
I'm shocked. Regardless of the outcome in the Colorado-Atlanta game only 5 teams are above .500 in the NL. Washington, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York. A shocking 5 teams (not counting Colorado) are within 1 game of .500 (either at or 1 under).
 
For Cinco de Mayo, we decided to put a hurtin' on the redbirds. It was 8-2 on Saturday night. I found out that Chris Johnson got himself a Grand Slam to put the Astros ahead 5-1 at that point. I saw most of the second half of the game at a restaurant. St. Louis could do no more than put up one more run the rest of the game after they've led 1-0 in the Top of the 1st. The final game of this home stand for the Astros is today (since it's Sunday as of this post).


And that's how my team did for Cinco de Mayo. How about yours?
 
The A.L. Central .... the worst division in MLB. While the Tribe is in 1st place somehow, we are only 3 games above .500 (weak, very weak).
 
Giants need a win here... And were asking the beast... the horse.. Matt Cain to carry the torch. Safe to say I'm confident in him.

Also would like to say... Happy Birthday to the greatest CF to have ever lived, #24.. The one and only.. The Say Hey Kid! (Get a new nickname Jason Heyward)
 
As of the top of the 8th (which just ended) we're getting our ass handed to us yet again and being shut out.

Edit 2: ...and down we go. I guess I can look on the bright side, as posted above pretty much every team is hovering around .500 this year so far. I believe we're coming home now, but playing the Cardinals and the Giants so I expect our losing ways to continue.

Runners have an expression of "hitting the wall." Well, not only did we hit the wall, we crashed and burned. A Cardinals' exorcism of my Astros resulted in us losing 8-1 and not leading at any moment of the game. I stopped watching once the Cards led about 6-0. Good news about this series is that we've won some NL Central matches for a change. We failed. BAD. This is like one of those times where you are seemingly on top of the world and everything is going well... until (since NASCAR was at Talladega this weekend) The Big One happens. Well, the big one happened to us, and it was bad. Cards get 11 hits while the Astros could only manage 8. Today was José Altuve's birthday, and I'm sure he'd want an Astros WIN. Jordan Schafer's base-reaching streak to start a season was snapped at 25 games as he failed to reach base today.

Up next- some fish come to H-Town for a three-game set: Marlins at Astros starting tomorrow night.

Ya that's his first of the whole season. To be honest, I saw that coming today while i was listening to the game. I thought Albert is going to go deep this time. I was right.

This is the only homer of the season for him so far. so far this experiment and purchase is not working well. He has 7 RBI in 27 games. For a Super slugger... That is awful. if this continues This will be the biggest upset in a very long time, AND the Angels have to pay this guy a 1/4 of 1 BILLION dollars over 10 years. This will be the biggest mistake for a while. i might be wrong, however his numbers over the last 3 years have been on the decline. There is a reason St. Louis didn't go after him again. they saw this coming.

NOTE: Bautista almost got number 6. he missed the top of the wall by 3 feet. Yes bautista is struggling, however when you being booed off of the feild until today, there is something wrong for Albert.
 
Chris Davis moves to 1-0 on the year despite going 0-8 with 5 Ks today as the Orioles win 9-6 in 17 innings. Darnell McDonald (to me he's a mini-Manny) loses the game. Last time something like this happened was 1925 between George Sisler and Ty Cobb (whoever THEY are). Davis pitched 2 scoreless frames.


Bryce Harper stole Home tonight. First teenager since 1964 to do that.
 
Except beat the Marlins.
 
Hamels admitted he threw at Harper lol. The article I read about that mentioned he could get fined and/or suspended for doing so. Guess he wanted to bring back the days of old in baseball lol. Harper is doing good. Stole home as someone already mentioned. Heads up play on his part. I find myself watching the Nats whenever I'm on MLBTV. Too bad about Werth breaking his wrist. Looked nasty.
 
This should be a fun GTPlanet grudge match... guess what series starts tonight? Right- Giants at Dodgers. You know who you Giants and Dodgers fans are, so have at it.


Meanwhile, my Astros will host the Miami Marlins for three games here in H-Town. There's also Mets at Phillies tonight on ESPN Monday Night Baseball. Good luck to all of your team(s).
