Most hated mission?

I strugled with #12 at laguna sega, but after figuring out the handling of the gt40 and the flow of the track, i found out that the fastest way is to turn in very very late, and get the fastest speed coming out of corners. this actually made it a breeze. and for ppl having a hard time with the subie mission at tskuba, I won it easily on the 3rd try after experimenting with driving style, and found that you can brake right b4 the apex, this allows the car to tuck in, and just accelerate out. and as a guidline, if you are not passing the 2nd place car b4 half way down the straight, then your chances are very slim at winning unless you are a mirical worker at the long right hander.

i saw daan's video on m34 and i'm not impressed not trying to offend his driving and all but i mean i use a controller and i follow a better line maybe its because its pal but his run was not that great.

I've passed all the missions except 34 (I haven't even tried it yet). My least favorite was the Nissan race car at Le Mans. That mission took me FOREVER to beat. I just couldn't seem to get 3 clean laps in concurrently. 11 was tough, but a little practice to learn the car and it wasn't that bad. The one with the Subaru's at Tsukuba I actually passed on my first try. Perhaps I was lucky. All the others weren't that much of a problem.

I really haven't found any of them to be too increadibly difficult. You just need to have patience and you can do it. Each one is just a process of learning the car and course and perfecting your laps. Of course, I haven't tried 34 yet.......

Missions I hate:

Draft the Skyline around the test oval
Draft the Nissan Cube around test oval
Toyota 2000GT(?) around New York(?)
One Lap magic w/Merc-Benz SLR around Nurburgring.
Dodge Charger around Seattle

As for the rest...they were actualy quite bearable to say the least...!

Try to look up "Mission 34 notes" from Write Up thread. There it tells you each split times, so you know where you are losing time. I passed mission 34 because I was able to find out where I was doin slower by compare my times with his times. I think you should give a try, it really helped me.

i got it down to a 9:16 clean i just mess up always in the last turns after the long staright.

Yeah, because sometimes we get all excited with such a good run, and then just lost at the end of the long straight road.

EvilToast
actually when i do m 34 more than 3 times i get worst at so i do it 3 times a day lol and usuallly get pretty close.

Here are my times, you can compare them with yours. Hopefully this will helps you buddy.

1. 1.49.xxx
2. 1.40.xxx
3. 1.32.xxx
4. 1.18.xxx
5. 1.06.xxx
6. 0.55.xxx
7. 0.41.xxx
8. 0.32.xxx
9. 0.26.xxx
10. 0.14.xxx
11. 0.05.xxx

I beat that old sucker by 0.7 second. My total time was 9:12.6xx and SL300's time was 9:13.3xx

from what i see you're faster the first half of the track but i'm faster in the 2nd half which still makes no sense why i can only get a 9:16 when i'm only on average .5 seconds slower than you on the first part. from # 5 on i'm about 1.5 seconds faster than you.

9:16 is because you hit the wall at end of the long road and got 5 sec. penality? I remember you said you lost control at end. :dopey:

yeah but i didnt crash just slide sideways a bit then regained control.

hmm... if you slided against the wall, then it means you were on the grass for a while right. It's very possible that grass slowed you down couple of seconds. That's all I can think of.

thats what i mean but sheesh 9:16 how cruel

Mission 14 complete.

Some will be surpirsed how.

When I first got into this mission I had no probs passing the first 4 cars but made no progress on the Buick and always lost by about 5-6 secs. This was with auto on a DS2.

I then got to the stage where I passed those 4 cars where Daan passed them. I had switched to manual - but still made little progress on the Buick. I used different gears than Daan on a few corners and this made me a little faster.

Some said the pit chicane can be taken flatout - I have not yet managed that but a slight tap on the brakes and a small coasting section gets me through there without losing a lot of speed.

Skant said the section from the top of the hill to the start of the main straight can be taken fast if you use the width of the track. I thought I was doing this. I studied my laps over and over but could not see what I was doing wrong. But eventually it came to me. I was turning in too late on one corner (surprise, surprise - the first corner of this section). After the hill there is a slight right bend and then a sharp right hander. Here I was braking in the shadow, changing down a gear and turning in. I concluded I was turning in too late and therefore running wide or losing speed in order to not run wide.

I tried to turn in early but for some reason my thumbs and fingers could not coordinate properly (DS2 remember combined with my lack of skill).

So I thought I would run a mission on auto so I could concentrate on the racing line. This was a test session to learn something.

I also thought I would check where auto selected gears different than what I thought was ideal. I knew at the hairpin it will want 1st gear. I held it in second as that is what I use around there. For the left hander to start the uphill climb it dropped down to second (I use third) but I left it. I still passed my first victim going up the hill. For the right hander it dropped down to second which is the same as me.

I can not remember what gear it selected for the hard right but I got the line right and flew through this section allowing me to pass my next victim before the start of the main straight (at this stage I was up with Daan's progress).

On the main straight I did not hold any gears (not on this lap). I passed my third victim before the end of the straight and nailed the two chicanes leading to the start of pit straight. I past the Charger during the right hand turn (almost identical move to Daan's).

I then nailed the chicane as well as I can and was 4.8 secs down. I then made a huge mistake at the hairpin. I think I pulsed the brakes for some unknown reason (maybe I was thinking too hard about keeping it in 2nd). I ran wide and got a 5 sec penalty. Just as the penalty ended the Charger rammed me up the rear giving me a little boost. The left hander and the hill were good but I made a small mistake going around the right hander (going too fast). I thought I was done but kept going as this was a test session anyway.

The rest of the lap was ok. I started the 3rd lap 3.3 secs down. Nailed the hairpin, lefty, hill and right hander at the top of the hill. I then nailed the next right hander like never before. I nearly hit the Buick turning onto the main straight. Unfortunately I stuffed the end of the straight but then nailed the 2 chicanes (if I had bulky hub caps they would have hit the apex and the wall). Since this car is so nimble and maneuverable I dove inside the Buick at the right hander to start pit lane and got to the chicane first. I then looked in my mirror to make sure the Buick did not overtake - he did not really try although I did move left a little as I thought I saw him go that way. I won by 0.192 secs.

So there you go ordinary driver, DS2 and auto. This mission is possible. Still hated though.

This was after a weekend that started on Friday night when I felt I had lost my mission nerve. I failed this mission badly and then M34. Strangely with M34 I got my best completed time of 13 secs down (included 2x5 sec penalties when overtaking) even though I felt it was my worst complete run (previous best time was 17secs which I thought was a blinder which also included 2x5 secs and a 180 degree spin trying to straight line the final chicane). I just felt crap at mission and was ready to spend a few weeks away from them but Sunday night at 9pm I thought I would have a crack and M14 came up as described above.

I just won the Zonda. Already have the DeLorean and the Tank Car, which leaves like....8 missions or so to go... Good luck with the rest of 'em! I know I'm not looking forward to 34!

Well done Gumpy 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 .

When you pass 34 there will be 34 👍

Thanks dude.

I may do M11 next as I think that pace suits me at the moment.

For me M34 has two faces. Until I had driven the SLR there for about 2 hours (not continously) it seemed impossible. Now it seems possible - just needs very few mistakes.

Everyone is different but my experience has been gained as follows:

1. Early in the quest I did 3 runs of M34 - no expectations other than learning something.

2. By accident I had some license tests I needed to gold and they just came arouns (in my random order) at a similar time. I would gold a test or 2 and then put that knowledge into action - some free laps, some in M34 itself.

3. Get a map - write what you feel you need to on it. - I have one showing where the dirty tricks are useful (as time goes on I am finding they are less useful - grass is not a fast surface). I have another map showing hard vs soft braking points. I had to learn where to take flat out and where to brake especially from Bergwerk to Karrussell.

4. Do a lap or 2 free run. Some people may do 10 free laps for each M34 run. I have not yet gone that far but I think it is necessary to do a few stress free laps to find the limits of the car through various sections. You can try a few things out.

5. My car is setup with no ASM, TCS 2 and medium sports tires. Others (presumably NTSC) have said they get too much grip with this setup. Others have said the cars handle differently - maybe try hard tires if you have NTSC.

I did not know the Nurb before getting this game. It is a long lap to remember but when you know the track it gives you confidence if nothing else. Confidence is needed for M34 because without it you may give up. Also when doing M34 runs do not quit all of them when you stuff up as this results in you knowing half the track well and it is the second half of the track where all the action happens so you need to know it well.

Yeah, I live in Tx, so I think it's safe to say that I have the NTSC version. I'd heard that was the setup for practicing, I just have yet to buy another SLR. I've already got one, but I have weight reduction and chassis stiffening and engine mods done to it that can't be undone. So I hafta go buy another one. Prolly gonna take a few laps on my home track to get used to the way the car feels, then start free running on the Nurburgring. Thanks for the advice, though, it is appreciated. 👍

I think you need to do your practice in the actual mission and just learn to wait the 2 minutes at the start.
Make the wait work in your favour by relaxing and focusing your mind on the job at hand, visualise the brake points etc.
One of the hard parts of the mission is safely passing the AI on some very high speed sections of track. You cannout practice this on a free run.

every mission from 9 onwards....

i dont like em at all, i think PD should bin them along with the licence's!

Found something mildly challenging did we ?

I reckon they should bin all missions and licenses and add a continuous B-Spec mode where you set your PS2 for a month and come back with everything completed for you. 👎

no i find it annoying and un - enjoyable sitting there hours on end doing the same track etc
i would rather PD spent more time working on the AI and just generaly improving the game.
why do i want to do the licence's every time they relese a new version?

you can replicate most of the missions by letting the car's in front go for 30 - 90 sec's and play catch up..

and whats with the B-spec ****? you telling me you did every single race in A spec?
i honestly value my time a little more than that.

No I have not A specced every race but some have. All I was saying is remove all challenge by B-Speccing the lot.

There are not many games out there where you do not need to retry a certain part of the game to get it right.

Even take sports games - do people win the trophy first time out ?

I am thankful for the challenge and although I have struggled with some missions I have really enjoyed them.

Removing them and licenses would suck. But that is my opinion and your opinion is yours.

Maybe do a Yamauchi (is that right ?). Gran Turismo 1 was made for him the way he wanted it. He did not necessarily make it for the masses but just took a gamble that the ideal game for him would appeal to the masses. That is why the AI is a little slacker in my opinion - to appeal to the masses. I have mates that still struggle to beat it.
