WOW...It just keeps getting better for Broncos Country.

Denver Broncos Brandstater may start in place of Orton Week 1 at Cincinnati

In a continuance of peculiar events in the first months of the Josh McDaniels’ era in Denver, the Broncos may need to rally the troops behind a sixth-round draft pick at quarterback to start the season.

After Sunday night’s showdown between bartered quarterback Jay Cutler and the coach that ran him out of town, Kyle Orton is the story after the game.

Once the boos have settled in the Mile High city, true suffering may have hit the Denver faithful harder than a bullet from a mopped haired quarterback. Orton suffered what has been reported as an “open dislocation” to his index finger on his throwing hand.

The injury came in first half of the Broncos-Bears match-up that possessed the storylines suited for a meaningful game in December but was being played out in the third week of the preseason. The reports during the game were that of a gashed finger after Adewale Ogunleye of the Bears had swiped at Orton’s hand in the second quarter.

Ogunleye was wearing a glove and it was interesting to say the least that Orton had suffered a cut. Following Ogunleye’s swipe, it was revealed by the Denver Post that Orton’s own bone did the cutting. Orton’s finger was sufficiently dislocated enough that it sliced through the flesh from the inside-out.

The damage is considered a major injury for a quarterback, especially on the throwing hand, and will require extensive stitching to heal. The finger had to be popped back into place by the Broncos training staff immediately following the injury and is much more severe than just a laceration.

Orton will be shelved for the final pre-season game and with backup quarterback Chris Simms scheduled to miss at least three more weeks with a high ankle sprain, sixth-round draft pick Tom Brandstater from Fresno State will get the starting nod in the final preseason game and possibly beyond.

Brandstater might possibly join Mark Sanchez and Matthew Stafford as rookie starting quarterbacks Week 1 of the regular season as Orton’s injury just might linger into the regular season.

Brandstater saw plenty of action after the Orton injury Sunday night and showed some signs that he may be capable of leading a Broncos offense that is led by one of the league's great young offensive minds in McDaniels. He went 8-for-12 with 110 yards and one interception for a rating of 61.1 in extensive second half action versus the Bears.

Brandstater proved to be a very efficient quarterback in college and at 6’5”, 222 lbs, he certainly has the measureables of a quality NFL quarterback. New England currently has a sixth-round draft pick that has thrived under the same New England offense that now is in Denver.

The biggest issue with Brandstater starting Week 1 at Cincinnati is that he has not been prepped for the role. With Orton and Simms ahead of him on the depth charts, his rookie season was mainly to consist of taking a backseat, learning the offense and how to be a successful quarterback at the NFL level. Now thrust into a starting role, Brandstater now will experience a baptism by fire.

One benefit for the young quarterback would be that the pressure would be minimal at best as Brandstater would be able to get out on the field with zero expectations. Unlike Sanchez and Stafford, not much would be expected of him and he would have a tremendous opportunity to gain valuable game experience and possibly surprise some folks.

The Broncos may have an interest in acquiring recently release quarterback Kevin O’Connell. The Patriots released the quarterback on Monday that had been projected as Tom Brady’s backup. O’Connell knows the offense and could add some stability for Week 1 and possibly further into the season depending on the recovery of Orton and Simms.

I think my Texans lost 17-10 last night. They need to defend better than what they shown, including that 75-yard TD scamper from Adrian Peterson. I respect Mike Tirico and Ron Jaworski(?) more as they talk kindly about Houston and my Texans. And they're right- more people just don't really know the Texans. Jaws even mentioned that we can be a playoff team. Most other people, in the tradition of "always hate Houston," usually think we're a mediocre team that won't amount much to anything in life. So I'm glad SOMEBODY, especially on ESPN, is giving my Texans a chance. The Rockets aren't the only good Houston pro sports team...

I hope that they have a good season as I said before they are my favorite AFC team.

Now my take on Favre after his first actual appearance that was longer than a series. He did pretty good for only being here for a couple weeks. I have no idea what they are thinking putting him as a WR though, he has no business being in that position. I understand the whole wildcat thing but when you have a guy that has like 2 career rushing TD's it's just not going to work.

That Orton story is nasty. I hope Brandstater is up to the job. Ogunleye is such a beast though that he'll cut you with your own bones.

John, the Texans really are a good team. It's just that you guys don't usually get the job done. This is just preseason though.

I've been seeing that play Favre came along with, and man... that was dumb of Favre! Why would you install Favre on a play like that against one of my Texans boys? I'll be interested to see who the Texans keep and who gets released. It's good to know there are Texans fans on GTP and that Houstonians aren't the only Texans fans. I think the Texans' defense needs to improve greatly. You can't allow so many gaps on defense, because they've made a number of nonchalant tackles. If they keep up this kind of tackling, it's going to be a long season for the Texans. The funny thing is that the Texans' offensive line was ridiculous, not to mention overpaid (according to a FOX sports poll, which can be just as bad as ESPN sometimes). The O-Line is getting better, but now it's the defense that needs to step up.

Final preseason game for my Texans is at Tampa Bay. I'll also have to cover some college football in this same forum. Good luck to your teams!

Sean Smith is... THE TRUTH!

Should never have taken the extensive NFL coverage we've had these past few years for granted in the UK, now it looks like we won't have red button games anymore and MNF hasn't even been announced by a channel yet.

So Richard Seymour is off to Oakland. Looks like the Fins now have an even better shot at winning the AFC East again. 2011 is going to be a bitch though. The Pats now have 2 1st round picks and 3 2nd round picks lined up. It's going to be insane.

I'm pumped! I'm gonna have to keep reminding myself that this game actually matters.

Also, go Tenn for obvious reasons.
<<<

Man Troy Polamalu is a freak. This guy is a straight up baller. And vicious. His first quarter has been instant pro-bowl material.

edit: Also, LMAO. Tennessee intercepts the ball right back. Looks like Ben thinks he's still playing against Shaq.

I think you spoke too soon about the Pro-Bowl thing. That hit looked bad, I don't think knees are supposed to bend that way.

Yep. Too bad he went out, but he was making every play while he was in.

Harvin just got his first TD. My Vikes are also finally pulling away like they are supposed to.

The ending to the Broncos at Bengals game is insane.

Good thing the Falcons caught the Dolphins napping today,as sluggish as the Falcons offense was would have been in trouble otherwise. On a good note mayby the Falcons D is a little better than at first given credit for.

The only thing that fears Pennington is the clock. Ugh.

Hopefully we'll start winning by week 3 like last year. Shame Pat White didn't make that sure-TD throw to Ginn. We have the most expensive O-line in the league and they just looked awful. If it wasn't for fumbles, we probably would've won.

What the hell happened to the Texans? Some people are thinking we're going to miss the playoffs in only middle September. I even stopped listening to the post-game show on the radio. I mean, the defense was damn near deplorable. All those 3rd Downs the Jets converted were just demoralizing. Almost like (yes, I'm going to say this) they bitchslapped us for sixty minutes.

It's not going to get any better next week at the Titans. Texans better pick up the slack before we have another pathetic season.

Well at least the AFC East is exciting again. Looks like the Bills could be in the mix this time too.

Then again, they were 6-0 to start last year.

edit: OMG SPECIAL TEAMS FAIL! LOL!

The Texans are soft. The Jets came in w/o their two best passrushers and still shut them down. How do you not get a sack on a rookie quarterback and allow him to go 12-16 on third downs? Dude It maybe a loooong season in Houston if things don't change.

You're right about that. We don't have an identity, like with Pittsburgh or New England. I still say that the worst, yet fitting, word is mediocre. We're a team with unrealized potential. We're soft, but we can play hard if the Texans actually play like they are. Take another sports team. My Houston Rockets of the NBA sometimes lose to some of the sorry teams simply because they play down to their opposition. I still remember how my Rockets lost at the Knicks this past season, playing poorly.

And again, this is why I don't believe in expectations. I want teams to surprise me (in a good way, of course). The Texans need to get it together and quickly to have any chance in the AFC South or even for the AFC Wild Card (which I think is most likely what they're playing for).

How nuts is this game?! The Raider's defense is absolutely dominating. Russell needs to step up and complement it.

Russell has a rail gun of an arm. Too bad he throws like Shaq shoots free throws.
