ANY ONE KNOW IF THE PIT STOPS,ARE GOING TO BE JUST FOR TYRES,OR IF THERE WILL BE FUEL FILL UPS.
ON A FILM A LONG TIME AGO,I SAW ACTUAL PIT CREWS,ANY ONE KNOW IF THIS IS GOING TO FEATURE ,IN THE FINISHED GAME.

WE DON'T KNOW THAT YET. WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL GT4 IS FINISHED ;)
Ooops...my caps lock.

What he should have said is...
Any one know if the pit stops are going to be just for tyres, or if there will be fuel fill-ups? On a film a long time ago, I saw actual pit crews. Anyone know if this is going to be a feature in the finished game?
Now I heard that there would be pit crews in the game. I also know that fuel will be a factor in the game. My guess is you will have to time your pit stops so that fuel and tires don't run out. They will most likely fill/replace both in a pit stop, but NOTHING IS FOR CEARTAIN.

One possibility, which has been used in NASCAR games, is to set what will occur in the pitstop before the pitstop is actually performed.

in Sierra's NASCAR game, You would adjust tire pressure, downforce, select which tires to replace, and how much fuel to add. You would do this while you are racing (the straights in nascar give you some time to do this :P ). Then, when you went into the pits, the proper changes would be made.

A simplified way to do this would be to have a quick pop-up selection come up as soon as the auto-drive in the pits takes over. Just a small overlay selection menu window, and as the auto-drive takes you to the pits, you have a few seconds to choose from FUEL ONLY, TIRES ONLY, or FUEL & TIRES.

I can not wait to see the pitcrew in motion. We have got a taste of the 3d crowds and drivers, but still, no pitcrew :(

Theres a video of a pitcrew taking care of a r390. Its around ehre somewhere.

watch there be 2D pit crews  J/K I have seen the video as well and it looked amazing I think it was on a GT40.

show me show me show me :drool:

why wasn't this bigger news before? Animated pit crews would be sick...

Image if GT4 made you pay for fuel ;) Would make you think twice about buying the 7 ltr super car heheh

Animated pit crews have be in a gazillion games, lets not get too thrilled about them.

That's a gt40, and it's cg sadly.

Yes I agree Greyout in fact many racing games have had these options for sometime now why not GT? The ability to vary fuel loads, tyre compounds, etc... and then change these options mid-race would be nice in GT4 👍

Amen on both counts, but we haven't had pit crews whatsoever before in GT as you well know, so it's new to us and thus exciting in that respect. Also remember a lot of people here seem to see GT as the only racing game in existence.

I don't care either way, but a car that levitates is damn confusing.

Hate to bring some negative comments but I wouldn't be surpirsed if that vid is in the beginning CG (as would the Cobra with the animated driver shifting...)

This sounds like a great idea.... They could expand it with maybe 1 or 2 more options, and you would still have time to pick between them (I know most of us GT fans, can breeze through the menu's).... Furthermore, it would be a good addition, and add to the realism, if you had to pick through the choices fast, as that would simulate the speed and urgency in a real pit stop.....

;)

There's generally a few seconds on the way into the pits for you to make that kind of call.

Something else that'd be interesting - changing the actual tyre type. You run a light tank with soft tyres for the first stint to get you ahead of the pack, pit early and swap to a heavier load and harder rubber, or do the alternative, start heavy, run long, then go to a lighter car with softer tyres as the race progresses. Make for some interesting strategy choices.

Agreed... That does sound like a good idea..... You would have to think fast, but as I said before, it would add to the realism IMHO....

If you can't change fuel and tyre limits then they may as well do without tyre wear and fuel consumption...

It would suck hard if they didn't implement this properly...

I like the idea of a popup menu for selecting tyres, fuel etc... other method of course would be to pause the game when you got to the pits... but this wouldn't work in Online/Ilink mode so therefore popup menus would be the best way... you never know there might even be a licence test on it so that you can learn it!!

The ability to change some simple settings would be good - front and rear downforce (if applicable) or any of the on-board computer controlled systems - traction control etc. Obviously the more you change the longer your pit-stop would be.

I hope they do have some animated people in pits, at least a jack. The floating car in GT3 was a little spooky.

Theres the fuel gauge in some screen shots and in Prologue, but I'm not looking forward to running out of fuel in a race. I'm not so keen on the idea.

As Eagle says there is the weight factor involved in a full tank/light tank senario. It would affect braking acceleration and some cornering, it would make for great tactical races.
But as with the accelerated tyre wear, there would have to be accelerated fuel consumption, its adding to the realism but there would be people like me complaining that my GT40 can only do 12km on a full tank!

If you are a good driver then you should know what you want to do when you pit. So selecting a menu option would be a breeze.

I would love the ability to change tires in the middle of the race. Like for instance, you put on t6's to get a good head start. Then you pit on lap 4, switch to t2's, and hold the lead. Maybe you could pause it and "radio" it in to the crew, telling them you're going to pit and have the t2's ready. Or maybe they would reccommend it.

Selecting cars will be tougher too, you may be leanient to pick a car with a larger tank.

in regards to animated pit crews:

1) They would have to be modelled well, as each car has a different number of lug nuts, different tire position, different gas cap filler position... To animate the crew properly, you'd have to have them interact with the proper part of a car. Heh, I can just see the fuel guy knocking on your window to tell you to open the fuel door. :P

2) Each car in GT3 took the same amount of time in the pits. If you have to animate the crew that performs the work, you have to actually get them around the car to perform the work on the car before it can leave. Allows for some interesting mods to buy - such as more skilled pit crew to hire / train, single-lug racing hubs & wheels to speed up the process, etc.

Usually in F1 the limiting factor of how quick it is - is the fuel going into the car...

That way the tyres and stuff would be on and off in a matter of seconds and then just loop on the filler guys for x times until full then have them backing away and dropping the car off the jacks...

I wonder if you can run the pit crew over like they do in F1!! Or stall it in the pits... or on the line for that matter?!

given the performance of the auto-drive sometimes, I think you'll have pit crews diving for cover behind the wall.

I really doubt engine stalling will be included, but if it stalls on the grid, you'll only have 15 seconds to get out of the car and into a new one :)

I just hope they make it so that the tires last more than 3 laps.....

...and thats the hard compound ones!

I was on the same wave length, during a lap you could press pause and make your pit strategy settings... then when you pit they're implemented. It would be cool too if they had a little timer or something in the menu so you could see how long your stop was going to take (ie need more fuel, the longer the stop).

My idea for the settings would be something like:
  1. Tires
    • Change Tires (Y/N)
    • Change Tire Type (Y- select compound- with an approximate lap indicator so you know about how many laps you can get with those tires/N)
  2. Fuel
    • Refuel (Y- select amount of fuel- with an approximate lap indicator so you know about how many laps you can get with that amount of fuel/N)
  3. Handling + Aerodynamics
    • Downforce (Increase/Decrease/No Change)
    • Brake Balance (Increase/Decrease/No Change)
    • ASM/TCS (On/Off/Increase/Decrease/No Change)
Of course only the settings you have available (based on car mods) would be accessible (ie if you don't have SuperSoft Racing Tires purchased for the car, you can't select them in the tire option, likewise if you haven't bought the brake balance controller, etc).

I think that would add a nice dimension to racing and a new strategy factor... it also means if your setup isn't working you can change it in the race (like in reality) and not have to exit the race reset the car and start over.

And they really need to get realistic tire wear... i mean F1 cars can do around 30 laps on a set of soft tires... not barely 10 on a harder compound.
