Pit Stops

I wasn't trying to make a point with it, I was honestly asking because I appreciate they don't bother with fuel gauges in F1 cars but a lot of cars in the game are simply going to be stock road cars which should have one. So perhaps two different types will be in the offing.

Very few or perhaps none have tyre wear indicators either - so its largely irrelevant whether a road car should, and a race car shouldn't have a fuel gauge.

Another fair point!!

Ok-dokey then... Tyre indicators and Fuel gauges all round?!

Why does everyone want tyre wear indicators?

This is meant to be a driving simulator, not a arcade racer. I've never heard of any race cars ever having tyre wear indicators. I want to have to leave it to my own judgement as to when I have to pit, when the car starts loosing grip on the bends and my lap times start dropping I know it's time to pit.

What you would need before you race is a car set up screen that lets you set your starting fuel level and which tyres you want to start with and roughly how many miles they would last. This would give you a rough idea of how long you have before the tyres start going off and when you need to pit.

I think the tire wear indicator is grounded in the it is a game and b/c you don't have the noticable G forces giving you and indication of wear it needs to be there. As for fuel, it should probably take the same route... F1 cars do have a fuel gauge, but it's on a computer in the pits and they can radio the driver as to whether or not to conserve fuel, have enough to go full out and when to bring them into the pits, how much needs to be added for their next stint, etc. Since we wouldn't have that ability/interaction in GT they need to have more "arcadey" style elements to allow those features to be integral parts of the game but make them understandable and able to be dealt with by the common gamer and not just hardcore race fans.

By the sounds of it I am hoping for a little too much from GT4. I was under the impression that tyre wear and it's affects on how the car woudl be successfully modelled in the game. If they are not, they maybe some kind of tyre wear indicator is the way to go. If PD do give us a indicator, I hope it's one for each corner, as tyres do wear at different rates.

Cheers

j8mie... the wear does effect the car, what i was trying to get across was that there's much less physical indication then if you were in the car IRL as to how well the tires are performing... the DFP with force feedback set high should improve this, but you don't have the real life g forces to reinforce the deterioration of the traction earlier on. With the ds2 i find it's only really evident when your tires are "red" and need changing. that you notice a signifcant drop off.

as for the indicator... if you're seriously asking all the previous gt's had 4 corner wear that went at different rates, i don't see why they would change it.

if you want the perfect driving machine then you will want good tires so a wear tire indicator is aperfect idea

tire indicator is a must!!!.....one question:
will all pit stop be as it is in LIFE (witht problems: for example a man couldn´t get one tire from the car and had to pull very hard so that u lost time because of this incident)????
or
will every pit stop be the same (everything´s perfect -->tire-change; fuel filling)???
would be nice if there would be some IRREGULARIES!!!

Ooops, miss-placed post ignore.

the first pic is real right?

Code Key and cobra...you two need to stop fighting each other over consoles and graphics. You always seem to be at each others throats about one or the other.

GT One Lover - If PD put into the mix failed pit stops then they would only end up getting on your nerves. Sure they happen in real life, and real life races are won and lost on the time a car is in the pits. But imagine if you lost a whole 45 mintue race, because the computer decided it was your turn to have a sticky fuel nossle.

Cheers

Jamie

Yea, that would suck to lose a race based on a mistake created by a computer.

Random pit stop problems? No thanks. Unless I can hire the Ferrari guys as a "Pit team" upgrade so they never stuff up.

I think you'l find it was over the "human element" bucko

code_key?

I had another thought about the pit stops sparked by a question about the pit crew being 3D and fully animated:

Formula 1 cars (for example) have a fuel nozzle on either side of the car. In France on the weekend for example the left side was being used, but come Silverstone on Sunday, it'll be the right instead. That's all very well and good but what about road cars? Are PD going to be sufficiently perfectionist that individual cars will have the fuel nozzle on specific sides like in real life? What if you're on a track where the pits wind up with the fuel rig on the opposite side to the nozzle of your car then?

Good point Eagle, I've thought abit about this myself. It just goes to show how something that might seem really easy, can be so much more work than you first thought. Add onto that, that some cars (namely Porsche's) have their fuel cap on the front wing. So now you need to think about whether it's front, back and which side.

If you think about that, you need to think about wheel alignment as well. Each cars different, so the pit crew animations need to take that into account as well.

I've done far too much thinking this afternoon, so I'm going 2 sit down now. But you get the general idea :)

A lot of the 'LM' & JPTC cars have twin fillers on the back of the car as well!

- since a stop takes only 5 seconds or so, i'd be happy with a 'generic' pit crew animation.

Is it NASCAR where they refuel using shoulder mounted fuel tanks rather than fuel hoses?
Perhaps this could be a technique used in GT4 for the road cars.

The two ports on the back of some production-based race cars are not BOTH fuel ports. One is a fuel port, and the other is a vent to allow the displaced air to escape as the fuel is rushing in.

its safe to assume that you won't be adjusting the alignment in the pits

i think the Vette C5-R also has fuel access on both sides of the car.

i'd be happy with a generic thing too... just add some life to it.. at least have the jacks and the lollipop guy holding the breaks on/first gear sign.

..but how will be the color of the pit crew???..i saw in the VIDEO OF THE FORD GT LM CONCEPT that the men have red/blue overoals! so is the color dependent from the car ur driving (for example: GT-One red/white, R390 GT1 blue, Mc laren white/red/blue)???..or is it always the same???

I didn't explain myself very well here. Sorry. I was talking about the pit crew changing the wheels, and the position of the wheels on each car is very different (as in the distance between front and back), so the pit crew would need to move to a different spot to take the wheel off/on.

Cheers

I understood what you meant ;)

GT-ONE Lover, from what we learned at E3, you will be able to select the colour of your team's clothing.

That would be great!! Would you also be able to change the colour of YOUR clothing (for convertables and such)

That we don't know about yet but we've heard rumours from time to time about helmets and other such personalisation features so it may be.

KY has said he would like to give you the choice of clothing, helmet and gloves.

:) That would be nice to customize helmets and gloves. Man, when GT4 comes out, I'm not going to get any sleep from staying up all night playing it. :sly:

'Twould be great! Nice to match your car. Although I know I'm just going put on Blue and white clothes in a red cand black car:lol:. With a purple and green pitcrew!:D
