POLYPHONY DIGITAL are you listening?

Atmosphere really does hit the 'geriatric' zones sometimes, especially some of the in-game music. I wish PD would stop the easy-listening rubbish they put on the menus. Nobody who listens to classical music would ever be caught dead playing a video game like this and I struggle to understand Polyphony's intended market sometimes. Are they targeting hardcore enthusiasts or are they looking to please automotive executives who spend too much time in board-room meetings?

I would dearly love a more 'aggressive' atmosphere to Gran Turismo, not this slide-between-the-sheets thing they've got at the moment. It started with GT2 and has grown progressively more upmarket since then and is now bordering on ridiculous. The gamers of Gran Turismo do not eat with golden forks, they do not have a grand piano in their living room, do not play polo with Prince Charles and are not escorted to and from work in a chauffeured Rolls Royce.

The most atmosphere GT has ever had on the race tracks is a cheering crowd, somewhat ridiculous seeing as you'd never hear them above the roar of your engine anyways. And most serious race events these days have massive screens for public viewing and I have yet to see one screen around a racetrack in GT.

I think PD have a stale development team and they're struggling for fresh ideas at the moment. Could it be a case of living in their own minds?

I agree with most comments here.
This generation PD have proved themselves the best at car modeling and sadly thats about it.

@AERO_HDT: Hmm, a little elitist in your thinking there, I'm sure there are people playing GT who not only listen to classical music, but also have a bit of money themselves...

Having said that, I wholeheartedly agree with your fundamental point, which was that the music in GT retains the SUCK crown once again. I'm also starting to have a problem with the engine sounds (as somebody else already mentioned). All the videos show them recording the exhaust note, and I suspect that's all they do. The problem with that of course is that the exhaust note is just one harmonic of the overall auditory experience from a car engine. The M3 for example sounds pitifully thin and high-pitched.

Vinyls for the cars, like gt2 (i think), and an online showroom so people can sell cars to each other (if there were more of them, sort of like gt4's second hand dealership):sly:

Yes, of course there are people who are well off and play GT, but they surely aren't the type of people that PD is marketing to? I'm not being elitist (anti elitist?), but the game itself seems intended for people who can afford Ferraris and Porsches and Bentleys.

Now before I get chopped up by someone who says "Well there ARE people who play GT and own Porsches and Ferrari's" let me just say that the majority of buyers don't fit that category and most people run around in everyday hacks and have kids and a mortgage and can only dream of owning some of those aforementioned machines.

I wonder what Kazunori is like in real life, because sometimes I think his "vision" is a little at odds with the sort of people who buy the game.

I think the problem is that you don't hear the exhaust unless you're in a convertable and even then - it's pointing away from and behind you so it doesn't sound quite like it does at the back. What you hear in the car is the engine and exhaust resonating through the chassis. They'd have done much better to stick their mics in the cockpit where you'd actually be listening from.

I really do hope that PD listens to their fans and that there's a huge improvement in GT5. That said, I'm always looking for other racing games and here's what I found today.

GTR is still planned for XBOX

Even if the title is not yet determined, the Swedish site IDG confirmed to us the release date of the racing game on X360 this week during an interview with Henrik Ross, president of SimBin.

"This year will be an important year. They launch GTR Evolution this summer and this autumn there will be STCC and the company's premiere on Xbox 360. The name of the game is not decided, all Ross says is "Race something".

All the novelties of SimBin will be available in 2010, a long development partly explained by Henrik Ross; " Yes, at that time we will develop games in parallel for PC, X360 and Playstation 3. It will take time."

This is good news since my PC isn't capable of handling newer games!

Well, maybe they could improve the quality of online races. But I guess that will be fixed every time new online events are released.

It's not classical, it's jazz. I like that the menus are laid back like that. It's a signature GT thing. Save the more intense music for the racing, and of course give us the option for custom soundtracks, spooled off the PS3's stored music.

Quite right! I certainly am not chauffeured in a Rolls Royce...

I always drive it myself! And I would like to know when am I going to have an opportunity to race it in GT5 - I'm sick of slumming it with STIs, Lancers & similar riff-raff!

More simulation
Reduce penalties
Private online race rooms
allow player to choose what cars he is racing against offline - I should be allowed to race against a field of one car type, two car types, 3 car types, etc. (and have a random option)
Better AI pilots (less ramming)
Staggered rolling starts, side-by-side rolling starts, standing starts
Cockpit view without wheel and hands showing.
Player chooses what will be seen in HUD

Improve the fairness of the penalty system as follows:

- Teach the AI how to recognize me on the track. Seriously, this is bad. With the implementation of the penalty system I have come to realize that most penalties are cause by the driving errors of the AI, not myself. If I overtake an AI opponent, they should adjust their driving line accordingly to avoid knocking me around. Penalize the offender, not the victim! Speaking of which, why does the AI not take penalties for bad driving?!?

- improved detection of ramming. Ramming penalties are often improperly given for proper driving when adjacent cars are mistakenly bumped entering or exiting turns. moreover, ramming infractions can still go undetected, provided you oversteer in the direction opposite your contact. remove penalties from being rammed behind.

- improved detection of shortcuts. it's only a shortcut when it makes the length of the track shorter. going off the tarmac because a pass went bad, or because a corner was entered with too much speed should not warrant a shortcut penalty, especially given that the time spent "off-road" (spinouts, slides, and other slowdowns) is usually more than enough of a penalty.

- revamp the implementation of penalties. most infractions occur during turns. By suddenly disabling the accelerator, the car often becomes destabilized causing a spinout, in addition to a time penalty. A small infraction shouldn't cost me the race.

- Penalties are not equally fair - a penalty given in a tight turn right before a long straightaway has far more dire consequences than that given in the middle of a series of slow turns (i.e. suzuka, fuji), where the effects of the penalty may not even be felt by the driver.

- and perhaps most importantly, the length of penalties needs to be improved to match the severity of the offence. a quick slip off the track does not warrant a 4.5 second penalty, which often means losing the race. **the length of the penalty should roughly reflect the time advantage gained by the infraction**

As is, the game is overly harsh and punishing for minor, usually accidental, driving errors. PD please fix this!

I would like a big flashing sign above the racers car Saying.

i am crap at driveing & im not GT worthy (for the rest of the week)

for racers that knock others off lol

no im just kidding just do your best at GT5(at the end of the day its only a prologue)

please all mighty race simulation masters, please explain to me why, when someone bumps me from behind and knocks me off, i get a 5 second ramming penalty?

how exactly does one go about ramming someone that is behind them anyway?

Patrocles
Cockpit view without wheel and hands showing.
Hmm...don't really see the point of that one. But what I would like to see is correct animation of the wheel in cockpit view for people with 900 degree steering wheels. It's somehow off-putting when I'm turning the wheel 90 degrees and my animated driver only turns it about 35 degrees.

But now I'm just getting picky ;)

Strangely enough, I don't find that very disturbing. I do find disturbing, however, is with the F2007 I'm turning the G25 wheel way round & the in-game hands are barely turning...

When I was a kid i thought that in the year 2000 whe would all be driving cars which 'floated'!!

Since the Mmicrowave Oven and the compact Disc nothing really has been invented over the last 10 years or so which has knocked our socks off and we've all gone - bloddy noorah - thats a bit good!!

Am I going off topic here?

Other than the fact that CD's have been with us for about 25 years, and microwave ovens for twice that.... :)

i like the jazzy layed back upscale feel too. i dont think they will change that.

The shortcut thing is utter B.S. so is the ghost and the wall collision.

Just a moment ago I was playing suzuka, I was on the straight away headed for the 130r. I was in 2nd place behind another lotus. He touches the dirt and starts to tank slap like crazy. I see him ghost so I think "AWESOME! HE'S MINE!" and watch as he slams against the wall and bounces off.

But what's this! As he's bouncing off the wall, and spinning, he is NOT a ghost! He slams into me, sends me spinning, I slam into the wall and get a 5 second "barrier penalty" now I'm sitting here watching as the ENTIRE 11 other cars pass me.

Also...how can you get a shortcut penalty, when you just spun off the track, slammed into the wall and are making your way back onto the track. Isn't that the exact opposite of a shortcut?

Good post. Not much fun getting a penalty when someone rams your from behind.

I would like to know that too.

You guys have covered most of it. I hope they read all this..

Amen! Apologies to those who like hip-hop, but I'm so grateful every time I don't hear rap when I'm racing. IMO jazz, funk, and classic rock are the ways to go 👍.

I'm not a big hip-hop fan either, but I have to say it's got its place in GTA4, which, despite a complete lack of realism, is a racing game at it's core. I suppose it's music for the mood.

Hip-hop fits in with the Need For Speed games, because it fits in with the street racing culture of their last few offerings. I feel like the GT series is a bit more upscale, and the music fits in well - even the more rock-oriented parts.

1) Why is there no P750 online PRO race for Fuji Speedway?

2) Why do you get shortcut penalties for going wide on the outside of corners that do not lead into the next one?

3) Every single collision should be a penalty. Repeated collisions should cause a player to be kicked (i.e. like in Counter strike source if you kill too many allies/hostages, totally different, but same principle, kick people for ruining the game for others)

4) This system of 'catch-up' on the intermediate races is annoying... because the best drivers get punished for leading the race. (You see this is mario-kart, the lead players get the worst power-ups. Now It seems to me like its the same principle... Not very simulator like is it...). The other day i crashed off on Fuji Speedway, and won with a 3 minute 54 total time. The race after, i lost with a 3 minute 21 finish time, i was leading the entire race until a renault Clio outrun my 500bhp Ford GT Test model on the final straight.

5) Please stop making us do races from the back of the grid without a choice of qualifying. I preferred GT4 where the race was easy, but you can come back to it later with a slower car for a greater challenge and get more a-spec points. (or at least have standing starts for christ sakes...)

6) If you put any 24 hour races on this game, please don't make the very best cars in the game only winnable from these. Thats just plain annoying.

haven't read through all the post of this thread, but I want the option to re-select my car when inside an online-event. Replay of online events.

Get rid of the Short Cut Penalty, seriously how does running off into Suzuka's 130R become a way to slash distance off a lap...

Add JGTC cars to the line up!!
Whatever happened to the Xanavi NISMO Z that appeared in that trailer??

Many good points in here!

My biggest one is when I am making a nice turn & the driver behind me hits the side of my car and I get a ramming penalty. A slight change to make it so the car in front should not be able to get a ramming penalty would be nice.
