Porsche!!

To stay with Porsche, I mentioned in an old post that if PD wants to make GT4 a game where we can go back in time and trace the history of the automobile, not having Porsche in GT4 as one of the greatest auto makes is like not having Ohio State as one of the best college football teams. It's like not putting Michael Jordan or Wilt Chamberlain in a game about classic basketballers. It's like not mentioning Aryton Senna or Sir Jackie Stewart in an F1 game. But I'd like to say, I don't think it would seriously hurt the franchise to not get one of the best auto makes. I mean, I'd like Ferrari and Lamborghini. We pretty much know McLaren is in the house for GT4, so I'd like to race a 360 Modena down Tokyo R246. I'd like to race a Lamborghini Supertrophy Diablo around (or at least the Murcielago GT car), or anything like that. I'd want to race the Porsche that won Le Mans the year I was born (1983).

But no Porsche? How can PD pull off this history lesson about the automobile? I'm not applying pressure. I'm just recommending Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, as all of which have positively contributed to the automobile's history.

But then it's down that age old problem of licensing, you acn't honestley believe PD don't want Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini amongst others in the GT series. The problem is, they might just not be able to get them in, legally. They tried the Diablo GT car in GT3 but Lamborghini pulled them over it and in an effort to not piss Lamborghini bosses off and ruin any future hope of getting them in, PD didn't arue and removed it from US and PAL versions of the game. If PD can get them, great, if not GT4 will be a great game anyway. But look at things this way, if GT4 has all these top marques that we all want to see, what well established, exotic maques does that leave for GT5 to add to the series. I honestley think PD might be in a situation, or getting into a situation where they will hold some of the great cars or even marques back for GT5 to be sure there is some highley wanted cars and marques left to debut in the PS3's best racing game.

As I said before (might not have been in this thread), I don't think licensing is a problem. The GT series is very profitable and Sony definitley has the money to buy the licenses. If Microsoft could get Ferrari for PGR2, Sony can get Ferrari for GT4.

Licencing is always a problem, if EA still own the Porsche license and don't want to share it PD which are a rival remeber then PD don't get the license simple as that. Microsoft on the other hand arn't so much of a rival to EA and also Microsoft wil be willing to throw more money at someone than anyone else, they've proved that in the past, if EA say yes we will share the licese for so much, and the license isn't worth it, Microsoft would probably still go for it, but Sony wouldn't.

I don't buy into this business of having to delay GT4 for the inclusion of different (sorely missed) cars like Ferrari and the such. I say that if the game is ready, then release the damn thing! I too am sick of GT3 and am ready to play GT4! If getting Ferrari in means another 6 months of waiting then, I'm sorry to say, screw Ferrari! Besides, what about the support of the HDD and downloadable content??? Wouldn't this be a perfect situation for that?

Here is what they should do. Release the game now and when/if they get the license to Ferrari/Porsche/whatever, offer it as a download online (hell, I'd pay an extra $5-10 for that) and make everybody happy. I for one am very sick of waiting.

I'd think actually that Microsoft is a bigger theat to EA than PD is. Microsoft's biggest racing game for X-Box is PGR2, more of an arcade racer than sim, much like EA's Need for Speed Series. GT on the other hand, is purley a sim racer. PD is not in the same category as EA since their games are trying to target different audiences. If EA is willing to give a license to a company that is making a game in the exact same genre as one of their flagship products, PD should be able to get Porsche, Ferrari, etc.

And @ Majin, have some patience. Good things come to those who wait.

Also keep in mind, if they don't get the licensing for Lambo, Porsche, or Ferrari now, they could just get it later and then release the cars as downloads! GT4 uses the PS2 hd, and I would think downloadable content would be an almost definate. And keep in mind, 500 cars is the initial release number! and that is all going to fit onto a 9.5 gb disc at best if they go dual layered so...... I would think individual cars would be rather small and easy to download! So by the time they start GT5 they could have over 1000 cars released for the game total! Yeah that is prolly an exadgeration, but still you get the point.

There is no official number of cars in GT4 yet, all PD have said is more than any previouse GT which means more than 600, 500 is just a number the media jumped on. One thing PD would be looking at though, is that if they release everything in GT4, what does that leave for GT5 in terms of new marques and cars, sure there will be new Impreza and maybe the Nissan GT-R by then but still not the same as finding out Ferrari is in for the first time ect. I think PD will hold onto one or two big licenses that we all want for GT5.

As for Microsoft being a bigger rival than Sony, they arn't, Microsoft only has a couple of series, Sony has several different series of games, including sports which rival the EA games and now Sony has an exclusive F1 license which has been frowned on by EA. PGR2 might be closer to NFS than GT, but all the other games Sony makes far outweigh that. Also you have the point I made about cost, Microsoft will be more willing to pay more than a license is worth, Sony on the otherhand probably won't be, as a company Sony is losing money, whilst Microsoft is making, even if they have to pay this 80million pound fine or however much it is, they will still end the year with profits.

The Belgium courts fined MS 631 million, not 80 million. Yet, like you said, Sony is loosing, but MS is gaining. Sony have to stop make crappy products. They once made the best audio/video electronics, but not anymore.

I never heard anyone from PD say GT4 will have more cars than any other GT title, but I'll take your word for it.

I was always under the impression that PD was shooting for 500+ cars, and not more than any other GT title. How many cars did GT2 have, again?

That what most people think, it's the way the media have jumped on the 500 cars figure. In GT2 there was around 592 cars I think, it was up in the 590's anyway.

With 592 cars in GT2, and Kaz saying GT4 will have more cars than any other GT title, it is weird that the media has lached onto this 500+ cars number. You think it would have been easier to say 600 cars.

Media generally don't 'latch onto figures' in the way that people here seem to imagine they do:

In particular, the number 500+ keeps reappearing, even in magazines that have had direct contact with Polyphony and interviewed programmers, modellers, producers and Kazunori himself . It is not some coincidence that all sources say the same thing.

"500+" IS THE FIGURE SONY/POLYPHONY IS SAYING, AND SO THAT IS WHAT IS PUBLISHED. It's not arbitrary, it's not an estimate, it's not a guess.

When they ask Yamauchi how many cars, he says 500+ (or "More than GT2" but has Sony/Polyphony ever come out and said "There are 592 cars in GT2"???), when they ask SCEJ, SCEE, and SCEA their reps they say 500+. That is what we get told, and this number tells us:

-Polyphony has committed itself to modelling at least 500 cars
-There will be a lot of cars
-The number is not fixed
-They are probably still adding cars

Porsches are stupid, at least the new ones. Tuned Porsches are much cooler. Give me the RUF Porsches, maybe some Gemballa stuff too.

Porsche itself would only be interesting for the older race cars like the 935/936, the 356 Panamericana, the 911 GT1s from the late 1990's, the 962 and the 917. For the rest of it most is overruled by RUF.

No - they use a Porsche shell but everything else is Ruf-built and assembled. Under German law, any company which makes and assembles more than 75% of the components of a car are recognised as the manufacturer of that car. Ruf GMbH are a car manufacturer, not a tuner.

On the car's registration document it says "Ruf", not "Porsche". It's VIN will return a Ruf, not a Porsche.

Everything on this topic is mostly speculation!

It's fun though, wondering if certain cars will be in GT4. I like listening to all the different arguments too. I can only hope that GT4 does surpass GT3 on most levels and that we do get some exotics thrown in. (BTW, the RUF CTR was a monster in GT3, I found it hard to steer though since it had so much power. I'm sure I tuned the beast to over 800bhp!!) My favourite cars from GT3 are the RUF's so I hope they have more of the same in GT4.

I don't think any Ferrari is junk compared to another one!

I'm sure if you were driving around in an F50 and your mate had an F40 you wouldn't be raging in your carbon tub with your normally aspirated V12 producing 513bhp from 4.7 litres saying, "Damn it, this car is a piece of junk compared to my mate's F40 ...!"

As I have never driven an F40 or F50 I can't give a personal opinion ... but I do read evo magazine. In an article entitled "Scarlet Fever" (evo 064= Special Ferrari Issue) the magazine did an amazing group test of four Ferraris: 288 GTO v F40 v F50 v Enzo. I quote;

"These are the greatest supercars that Ferrari has ever made. Our task is simple: to drive them hard for two days on the road and then decide which is the best of all. The result might just surprise you..."

I wouldn't mind being a road tester!! Anyway, to cut a long story short, the F50 won. I was shocked because I had heard rave reviews about the stripped out F40 and I loved it's looks. The F50 (before) just didn't do it for me but I trust the opinions of this magazine. Basically evo thinks that Ferrari perfected the supercar with the F50:

"It's the most engaging physically and emotionally, which is why it's the best supercar Ferrari has made."

Although, my favourite car from the whole test was the 288 GTO:

I would love a 288 GTO to be in GT4 ... Or maybe the 288 GTO EVOLUZIONE ... But that's another story!
