Not really, because as you just said, the difference is the auto-tune.

Bad singers in the past faded away because they couldn't sing. Any live performances were instant death.

There have been tons of artists that don't exactly have a great voice that have had careers that have lasted decades.

Today, you can be a terrible singer & still be considered a pop hit because of the magic that is auto-tune. And unlike the past, people aren't forgetting b/c you can continue to release albums as long as the mighty auto-tune is there to make your voice sound good.

I don't think autotune has been widely used long enough for any albums using it to be forgotten.

Besides, look at groups like N Sync, Backstreet Boys, Limp Bizkit, New Kids on the Block etc... They were huge at one point but now frankly are a mere memory.

Kanye is a perfect example. Considered a "singer", yet he's shown that once he doesn't have auto-tune, he can't actually hit the notes he did with it on certain songs. He's been booed off stage for it. T-Pain is another. Can't sing worth a 🤬 but b/c of auto-tune, he remains a hit with folks.

They are still making hits because of the same reasons the groups listed above were famous, they made some catchy music. Eventually though people will get bored and move on to the next craze.

Some of them had one or two good songs, the rest were the same "MWHAHAHA, I'm that terrible but catchy song and will stay in your head forever until you get the disc and hear me until I become boring" kind of stuff.

It has. Several hip hop/pop artists have tried to use it. They end up falling into oblivion because the music itself usually wasn't very good.

Anyway, I think we're moving away from my point. In the past, if you couldn't sing, you couldn't sing (I'm referring to Rebecca Black bad, not some semi-decent guy) & no amount of money helped propel you to stardom.

Now that auto-tune is around, even the worst singer can become a pop hit w/ a decent amount of money. So much to the point where you hear the obvious use of auto-tune & the singing is still terrible. It doesn't help that the majority of these auto-tune abusers are young adults with developing voices.

The only artist that I've listed above that they have outlasted is N Sync, all the other bands started in the 90's or 80's and are still at it, albeit at a lesser popularity level.

Now-a-days, it doesn't seem to be no longer a case of an artist dropping off the fads. It's the specific songs. Older rock groups dropped off the mainstream media but their songs continue to be highly popular. Current artists remain in the spotlight, but hardly anyone seems to remember Kanye's "Stronger" or "Gold Digger" b/c he keeps busting out new hits.

I'm guessing it's just the change in the industry, but again, it's just simply too easy now-a-days for someone to become an "artist", i.e. Rebecca & Cody posted before. Thankfully, even with auto-tune & the web, it seems most people still know when something is awful.

I agree with the majority of the what you guys are saying, regarding auto tune and the music industry, but in the case of Rebecca Black, I like her song, simply because it's just so laughably bad. Besides, raging and hating on it just makes her more popular, and I'd rather just laugh with it!

I notice that this is now the Autotune '10's' era which will probably be as easy to point out as stuff from the 80's in years to come. Most mainstream artists are using it even if they have a good singing ability because it fits in with the dance / R&B theme which has taken over pop. I have to say when used correctly it adds a good edge. Black's song didn't need it on the whole damn time!

It beats virtually every other genre of music in terms of sophistication, technical demand and emotional depth. More to the point is that it has been around for the past 500 years and is still going strong.

Eventually people will get bored with hearing it, how long it will last is unfortunately unknown. Look at the late 90's when about a million boy bands popped up out of nowhere all consisting of about the same setup, eventually people moved on to the next music fad and the boy bands have basically vanished.

Most seemed to last about 5, Kanye is a sort of an exception, the only artist that has fewer listens on Last.fm than T-Pain is New Kids on the Block(Yes, even N Sync has more than him) so he isn't as popular as you make him seem.

Like I said earlier, the internet has really made it easier for people like Rebecca Black to reach an audience, all they have to do is hop on to Youtube instead of going down to the record store or to a concert. It's not really the music industry changing, they always have and always will just try and pick up the newest fad to get as big of a piece of the pie they can before the fad gives way for the next one.
