I might have to pick this up if it is on two discs. I loved the atmosphere of the first RDR so this one will be epic.

Currently, I am playing Far Cry Primal and Forza 6 on the XOne and on the old 360- Assassin Creed 3. Imagine playing AC3 and RDR 2 at the same time- damn that is a bit of the old US of A there!

You can’t fly. Neither can your horse. You will both die

Wait, so naming the horse "Pegasus" won't make it fly? :odd: :dopey:

The riding physics are something else. Really have to pay attention to where you're riding. I've sent Arthur flying over the reins that many times now.

Nope. No Red Bull back then either

There may not have been Red Bull, but Cocaine was both common and legal in 1899.
There was Marijuana back then too & that reminds me of a saying when I was growing up:
"Don't drink and drive, smoke dope & fly." :boggled:

That first mission where you find the horse in the barn and you pat and lead it out - the 'pat' command was not working for me whatsoever...i spent nearly 2 hours trying to get it to work - i restarted the checkpoint & even started a new game. Then suddenly out of the blue it worked!

And even now i cant 'pat' a horse - he just seems to skip the animation?! Is this a weird glitch or am i missing something really obvious haha.

Anyway, great game - the world is astounding...espeically when you come down from the snow and into the first camp.
Are you tapping the button or holding it down? There is a circular bar that fills up around the button prompt when you hold it, which has caught me out a few times.

Flicking through the Metacritic reviews (97 Critic) + (7.8 User/1200 reviews) this game has to be outstanding and I was going to give it a try. I tried GTAV but deleted it twice as I struggle with huge open world games after a few weeks I end up finding there is 'too much' to do and end up just wandering around or doing the odd mission.

I guess from watching movies when I was younger it would be interesting to see the history and the detail of the Wild West of US on the xbox but I never got round to playing RDR1 back in the day.

I’m enjoying the game so far, I’ve played about 4 hours.Arthurs cool, he’s no John Marston though, but that’s to be expected.

I really wish they would of left out all this eating, feeding your horse, stamina and health core silliness, that’s my only complaint really. It’s not terrible, but it’s one of those things that I think keep thinking that the game would a lot more enjoyable for me. without having to deal with any of that nonsense.

I have read the odd review like this ^^^ saying some parts can seem to take a while and become a little chore (like a to do list) i.e baths, feeding, stamina etc I have enough to do lists at work and home before I switch the console on and this has put me off jumping back into quite a few games ! On the other hand it has fantastic graphics, vistas and real details down to hunting, fishing etc .

p.s Has anyone found the selfie or free camera. Does it have aperture/FOV/DOF and more or just an old fashioned 'snap shot 1800's style'. I can't seem to find much info on all the settings available as this would be awesome if it was a full photo mode.

Enjoy the game all, I am watching this thread. I am close to ordering but it just does not have that 'must have' game factor for me (just yet). We shall see

If people have a GTA V mentality they will not enjoy RDR2.

RDR 2 feels so raw i sometimes forget the gun I have is not a machine gun plus I use free aim the shooting reminds me more of Max Payne 3 rather than GTA V.

When im on horseback I use aim assist.

The circular bar never starts filling up when i hold it down....i cant pat a dog either haha.

Sometimes i miss the 'comedy' Rockstar inject into GTA - they were very good at it. RDR is a very authentic, serious game compared.

I agree. At times it seems to be more of a RPG.

One thing that is extremely annoying. I just did the legendary bear mission. And was on my way back, when I stopped for a sidemission. I was then accidently kicked to death by a horse(I was trying to rob it). When I was revived the legendary bear pelt was gone, I couldnt return to an autosave, because it apparatly returned to after I was revived?!? Then I tried to return to the location of the bear and it wasnt there anymore. Obviously because I killed it.

So I tried to redo the mission from the options menu and as a result I would loose the money I saved till then? So I just went to my bearpeltless savegame and just took my loss.

Is this a bug? Or do you loose all your stuff when you accidently die.

After spending about 3-4 hours on this game yesterday I am definitely starting to feel the scope of this game. It is huge. Like way too big almost. I have a more GTA mentality since I have never played RDR1 and played a good amount of GTAV, so searching other peoples horse pouches almost got me into a bit of trouble. I like collecting items and looting bodies, since that's all I ever seemed to do in Fallout 4, but it is pretty great otherwise. I thought the feeding/horse/whatever chores would become excessive but they are very slow to drain if at all that I've noticed (but maybe on purpose since I haven't made it passed Chapter 2.) Time progression happens throughout the day and honestly the graphics aren't what I expected, but with the scope of the game it's acceptable. Also, I don't know how much goes into your honorable demeanor because I want to rob a bank but I'm not sure how it will pan out haha. I'll check the camera for you though.

My wife bought this RDR2 as a present and today she went shopping. So predictable . Like giving her flowers and then asking to buy new simgear. Some of us will recognize that.

I spent about 3-4 hours in the game so far. Slow starter and indeed special graphics. Is 'painted pastel-esque smudge' the right desription? Cinematic mode and the landscapes are phenomenal. That foggy winter atmosphere is special. Despite the excellent reviews I am not sure (yet) if this is a game I will play often? Maybe I need to get used to the relaxed play style vs the usual stressfull racesims?

This is exactly my problem with open worlds. I wander about for 10 minutes then turn it off. GTAv I actually played a decent amount, this looks great from what I've seen and something I may enjoy.

Exactly how I felt. GTA and racing games are much more fastpaced. In my experience with Zelda botw it took about 10-20 hours to actually start enjoying it. The first 10-20 hours were quite boring. 100+ hours later I think Zelda is one of the best gaming experiences I ever had. So I recommend giving it a good chance.

@BrainsBush It is nice to hear there is a nice relaxed pace to it all.

^^^ Re graphics above can you expand on what you were expecting? Are they outstanding and much better or a different style?

It is interesting to hear different views and that there is not too much pressure on doing too many chores regular

The pace is unbelievably slow at the beginning. I've never played a game with an intro that takes as long as that one did, barring Assassin's Creed III.

Graphics in my opinion is up there with Uncharted 4 and God of War. Blows away the graphics of every other open world game. Blows away GTA 5 for sure.

And its weird because it doesn't really feel like a Rockstar game. It feels more like Assassin's Creed.

Something I don't understand so far: I hopped on a train, shot a guard, and somehow the law found out and came after me? There aren't phones, and the train was in the middle of nowhere. So, how did they know I shot the guy? Also, you can actually climb to the front and pilot the train.

Also the "chores" aren't really cumbersome. I've played for 7 or so hours and I've fed and brushed my horse maybe twice or three times. What's more important is sleeping/eating every once in a while and managing how much you're sprinting full speed with your horse. Bathing and shaving is pretty much optional. But clothing is actually important.

These graphics ARE amazing. You could sometimes see the 'frame' of the landscape in GTAV...here, you can't.

Also, if I read my upper left corner correctly, if you rob a train in city limits, the law will be on you. Maybe that was it?

I like how lifelike they've made the animals, they even modeled them relieving themselves.

Progress wise I've made it to the second chapter, but much like the first I'm having a hard time actually focusing on it due to all the distractions.

Also, how do you brush the horse? It says I need to do it quite badly but the option is always grayed out. Do I have to buy a horse brush or something?

I guess I was just expecting more detail. A lot of details don't seem rendered well or the textures seem iffy but I'm not blown away. The views in the distance are of course fantastic just was personally unimpressed. And about 200yds in the distance at times wagons will just appear and load out of thin air.

I don't remember who I went to see at the camp but it's not until you follow them to the stable to sell another horse that the guy gives you a brush. I was looking everywhere to buy one but yeah, you're given it.

This is the most awe-inspiring open world I've ever explored in a game. It's just stunning at every turn. I've probably explored 1/5th of it so far. I want to go fishing, but I don't see a fishing rod anywhere for sale. Is it a mission unlock or something?

Poker in first person view is sublime.

Have you done "Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego"? The stable owner in Valentine gives the brush after you purchase a horse from him, when you go into town with Hosea at the start of the mission.

I did the mission right after I posted.

Yes.

You take John Marston's son fishing

Thanks @happycorey The same impressions I got watching the 4K broadcasts and trailers. It does sound excellent as an all round open world game and I may pick it up in the future if on sale or have more spare time over the winter. 👍

I turned off my PS4 now to get some sleep. Just finished Chapter III and I'm adoring this game.

I'll just write about a couple points that stand out to me:

1) Writing. Nothing in these 3 chapters and lots of side quests I did felt repetitive. The stories and tasks you have to do flow remarkably well and the pace is pretty good IMO. I haven't used fast travel except once to see how it works. Usually, when I have to go somewhere far away, I set the cinematic camera and just look at the screen. It gives space to breath, take in the quests you just finished or are about to start and looks amazing. The references to the USA's History are very well integrated in dialogs (both related to quests and also random, optional ones).

2) Graphics. The best I've ever seen. And I've played all uncharted games, god of war, horizon zero dawn, etc. The lighting engine is probably the best in the market (on par with Uncharted 4 and GTSport even if that sounds weird as hell) and the types of weather, atmospheric moods, times of day, etc is done to a level I haven't seen before. All dynamic and in a giant open world! No words can describe it... And I'm only playing it on a standard, original, PS4 with a 24" 1080p monitor. I can't imagine how good it must look on a 50" 4K TV with the PS4 Pro. Bonkers.

3) Sound. So good you barely notice it's there, basically... But when you do listen to it, is pretty amazing.

4) Gameplay. Very Rockstar, with the wheel selection menu, character control, animations, etc. It's a bit unresponsive at times, but nothing very intrusive. Even Uncharted games had similar issues. It's a matter of getting used of it. I was playing Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 recently and those games have a much more responsive character control system. All in all, I like how it plays.

5) Detail. Can be overwhelming for some people who prefer a streamlined experience, but it does give a special touch to the game. You feel 'you're there".

6) Voice acting. Perfect, IMO. Everything sounds real and believable.

I'm loving the game so far. I don't know yet if it's game of the year though. God of War was as close to perfection as a game can be. But GoW and RDR2 are completely different games. Will be fun to see how they battle at the game awards. :)

The only gripe I have so far with the game is the controls feel a bit clumsy, which I basically expected. The inventory management is going to take some getting used to, but I don't think its impossible (like Mass Effect 1, for instance). I also can't find a damn horse brush anywhere.

Aside from that minor quibble, RDR 2 is a god damn masterpiece.

This afternoon I took a train to Saint Denis and I literally just walked around, slowly, for 30 minutes. It was a truly remarkable experience, immediately bringing me back to my own memories of New Orleans. The amount of detail and care that has been put into this game is mind blowing.

I HIGHLY recommend a 4K HDR TV for this game. The foliage/vegetation is just...incredible. It's difficult to even convey how beautiful this game is. I always thought Forza Horizon 3 was stunning...but this is on an entirely different level.

I'm truly blown away.

I'm just barely into chapter 2, for reference. Taking her easy.

You’ll get the horsebrush shortly, as part of a quest. I was looking all over for one too.

I’m with you on the television. Xbox one X, on a LG 4K HDR OLED, the game is absolutely beautiful.

My mate all the way from the other side of the world streamed his gameplay for me to watch yesterday. I watched for two hours straight! Was like was like watching a film or something. The environment looks amazing, beautiful lighting, tones, atmosphere etc.

The detail that went into this game just amazes me.

I just realised some of the guys you shoot get wounded to the point where they bleed to death in pain.

Such a neat feature really.
