I think you get sick and apparently it is not easy to cure. Go to the Arthur menu and it shows a toxicity level.
I don’t have the game yet so it was rhetorical question.

I was curious/joking as to whether you gain an admirer for life & an open invitation to a candle-lit dinner whenever you’re in the neighbourhood. :odd:

👍

It's not related to snake bite guy and I'll put in spoiler tags, just so I'm not ruining anything for others.

Where Arthur meets a one armed homeless confederate veteran. Who just wants a friend because he hasn't one in a long time and then asks Arthur if he can hold him. :boggled:

Not sure if you ever run into him again after that though.

Does anyone think this game deserves its own section?
Its huge and we could have seperate threads for story/hunting/fishing etc.
It sure does.

I can’t wait til it’s time to leave work, so I can get back into it. I’ve spent way too much time playing this game since Friday, but I almost can’t stop

If you suck the venom from the NOC’s thigh, you get a free weapon in Valentine. He will be sitting outside the gun shop. But since the gun I wanted was locked, I just left. Maybe I’ll still have the opportunity later, when I’ve unlocked it, or its a wasted freebie. Only time will tell

You should've taken the freebie. I'm guessing you could've sold it for some cash & put that towards something else you want.

So I was weak and found a glitch on youtube. I now have 30 gold bars (worth 15k) sitting in my inventory :D
Should I sell it or will it ruin my experience? I have not yet decided.

A couple more interesting random encounters, number one is a totally random stranger, number two is tied in with leisure activities you could say:

there was a prospector with a little setup by a stream, searching for gold. All of a sudden, he finds a gold nugget, hops on his horse and rides away. Not so fast, pal. Two shots to the head after he pulled his gun on me and that gold nugget was mine.

Met the "world famous fisherman" forgot his name. Turns out, there's legendary fish in this game, on top of the legendary animals.

Also, a PSA: go to saloons. Sometimes you can get missions (hint hint small one at Valentine). Most other times it's just been strangers talking about past events, or talking about how good/bad the town you're in is.

Another PSA: some towns will have "illicit" businesses running...the only way to get to them is by robbing the store, an option will pop up to rob the illegal business. This is something that took me awhile to realize...didn't know that I had to actually rob them to get to it...unless there's another way to get to them, but I'm not sure.

Some stuff got shifted around this weekend, so I was able to get more time in, sitting at about 23 hours in, some quick thoughts:

-This might be the most immersive game I've ever played. It just sucks you in like a Hickey on prom night :) The world, the visually stunning environment, the encounters, the wildlife and the massive scope of this game all contribute to a very special experience.

-This game feels basically like a hardcore cowboy simulator, the pace is slow and prodding, though very rewarding. Even though the game autosaves, at times you cannot manually save, like during an active mission, this can be somewhat cumbersome if you have to shut it down and go do something for awhile.

-This game, though different in some aspects from RDR1, still retains the look, feel and tone of the last title, it feels like a true successor (even though it's technically a prequel)

-I'm not sure yet, but this might be the greatest game I have ever played.

Has anyone else felt bad about robbing people or places? I feel like in GTA your overall persona isn't carried throughout after robbing someone/something, but here it definitely is. I tried to rob a bank (for some cash) but I don't think they made you able to. Otherwise, the stores are more personal and seem to be too nestled in town. Does everyone have a gun on them? Hah.

Also all over the place I've seen people getting robbed or the aftermath of them being robbed by rival gangs or strangers, and it seems like I don't act quick enough but if I help out the victim, I still end up with a murder charge.. maybe I should hide the bodies better? Overall the game is really fun. I need to explore more and visit other Fences to find better guns because what I have isn't working out well for fire fights with strangers or gang members..

Eventually downloaded and on to my first chapter. I was worried about the graphics/style and game play as I am the first to admit my lack of patience and not being great at Open World games, but my first impressions are very favourable and on the Xbox One X the audio is great.

The graphics are great overall! Textures, draw distances and lighting look fantastic. A few close up textures (faces+hair) are not the best but the snow, mountains, animals, horses and buildings are really good especially on a 4K TV. I will take my time with this over many months slowly wondering around admiring the scenery.

Thanks guys above ^^^ and Mr @BrainsBush for pushing me as I was about to go back to Forza Horizon4 and Pcars2! But yep I am glad I jumped in.

I haven't found the camera settings yet but I have set up a photo thread as I really want to see all your captures as it will give me incentive and inspiration to try out new areas.

You get the Camera after you complete the first chapter, I haven't played with it too much yet. So far I have mainly been using the cinematic setting or turning off the radar and just taking pictures with the screenshot function, been getting some nice shots that way too.

GTA doesnt have the honorsystem. That does give the feeling of a lot more freedom in GTA. That fits the gameplay of GTA much better. Imagine if it had, the game would be unplayable or at least a lot less fun.

Personally I've never seen the appeal of these sorts of glitches as I find they have a way of sapping enjoyment right out of the game.

I have and I think they've worked to achieve just that, it even fits in with the story. Just from the little bit I've played so far the characters in Dutch's gang make it known they consider themselves to be a higher level of gang than the O'Driscoll's. Really the only way to do that is by giving Dutch's gang some sense of morality while portraying the O'Driscoll's as having none. They do this by having O'Driscoll members commit random crimes as well as having Arthur be critical when members of Dutch's gang violate this moral code.

@Northstar

So far I've bought into that mentality, it's working on me. I'm playing this as a virtuous gangster, haven't robbed anyone who wasn't a gang member yet. I did do the first bounty mission though, which was fun. After I returned to collect my bounty, just as I left, a distraught, physically abused Woman appeared in an alleyway saying she needed my help. I ended up taking care of her problem for her. I won't say what that was but it really highlights this game's ability to strafe the line between good, bad and morally gray. I already can't wait to play more tonight, this game is just insane.

Man entering cinematic mode is awesome to transit between locations since it's virtually a auto pilot, but you really need to pay attention because even strangers will ambush you.

I just went back to the store, after being away a few weeks (the aftermath of a mission pushes the story), and I’m no longer able to get a free gun. Oh well, I can still afford anything I want.

When it comes to strangers I usually do not rob them a woman fell from her horse and got stuck so I helped her and took her back to Valentine.

To be honest the game gives you a choice. Im treating Arthur Morgan as a anti hero. I kill the scumbags while helping the innocent.

Why use fast travel when this feature (cinematic mode) looks so mesmerizing. :)

If you suck the venom from the NOC’s thigh, you get a free weapon in Valentine.

I went with giving the guy medicine option, rather then sucking the venom out (not that there's anything wrong with that ) and I got the free weapon reward. Sounds like there might be multiple endings for random encounters?

I've only used cinematic mode once, it resulted in the "riding off a cliff" incident I posted about earlier.

Personally I don't see myself using cinematic mode much simply because I enjoy hunting on my way to places.

If you hold A while in cinematic mode it’s supposed to keep you on the path, don’t know how well it works though, I tested it briefly and it seemed like fine

I’m sure it works fine, the problem was solely between the controller and chair.

I haven’t had any bad horse mishaps yet, I did break a fence around a Sheep pen because I didn’t slow down in time though, the horse and I wound up in the center of of the pen with sheep running around us. I think it was sheep, kind of got out of there fast.

Honestly, I did this too and I kind of wish I didn't.. Maybe 10, but I no longer care about the pennies or few dollars earned for looting or small missions.. or literally anything else because I can buy it. Except for things I've earned. So.. would be great if you could buy or acquire properties and farms and run businesses through them but I'm not sure that will ever happen in single player.

You just have to be galloping on the designated path. If you're off trail or not in a sustained speed it'll just slow down.

Man, I put in A LOT of hours tonight and it was honestly so much more rewarding now. Gun fights were a huge struggle for me early on but either me or my character is getting better. Still haven't nailed down Dead Eye very well but I made it this far without relying on it so I'll try to use it to my benefit later on. Only did a few missions and a little exploring but I still haven't grasped the size of this map.

I don't even know where to begin with all the adventures and side shoots but I will say hunting is so much more fun than I thought it would be. Exploring in the north west I found Elk, and then some something with HUGE antlers. It must have been legendary but I couldn't Study it long enough and it was on the run. Never found it again unfortunately but while stalking a few other Elk I saw a bear. So sneaking around the woods I was finally able to get to a good vantage point and fire a perfect headshot on the first try, took him out, and pleasantly surprised to find it was a Perfect pelt. What a treat haha.

I could probably go on and on about all the encounters but you all are similarly getting them at the same point in our timelines.

If an overly nice fat guy invites you inside his house to have dinner and some drinks with him and his wife, LEAVE after one drink haha. Otherwise they'll steal all your money and you have to go back and kill them to find it. It's so weird and ****ed up I tried to burn the house down with fire bottles

I'm still getting used to the controls and menus:sick: I went to Valentine town to have a slow wonder around and see what is happening and try a mission but I stopped and pressed right trigger instead of left trigger and accidentally killed a man in the high street, he was only saying hi! (felt bad). 5 minutes later I have high bounty and half the town chasing me down Dead. My horse also fell off a cliff but luckily we survived (just) after a few revives. It's all fun learning curve!

Edit: Found out now. I have done some reading of some beginners guides, looks like there is lots to learn!

Jesus, the number of times this has happened to me isn't funny. Train guards, strangers, people in town and shops, passers-by... I keep shootin' them accidentally. Got no idea how to get rid of the bounty on me and the bounty hunters are becoming a real pain in the ass.

____

I'm trying to limit myself to one or two missions and a bit of hunting per day, last night I did the drinking 'mission' with Lenny, which was hilarious... then ultimately found myself in the swamps around Saint-Denis, where an encounter with a stranger took me into the town itself. No doubt Rockstar have really excelled with the map.

You can pay your bounty at the Post Office.

I never shot someone by mistake but a I've pulled and aimed my gun at a few people because the button to bring up the menu to interact with them is the same as aiming.

I'm also finishing the story and never relied on Dead Eye too much either. I couldn't get used to the mechanics until late game. 4 buttons is a lot! ^^

After finishing the story I hope I can go and hunt and craft everything I didn't.

@happycorey wasn't it a Western Bull Moose? I saw one yesterday and shot it down with a clean headshot but the skin was only "good". I think we can't shoot right from the front... Maybe it has to be a clean shot from the side in order for the animal's skin to be in perfect condition. Which if true, is great attention to detail IMO.
