Tesla Model S- P100D confirmed

I'm just feeling sorry for those who sit in the back of a Model S taxi at the airport and have to sit in a very uncomfortable position all the way to the hotel due to the lack of any real headroom. What a way to start a holiday.

Sounds pretty fine to me versus figuring out public transit (my case in Amsterdam) or, you know, the brush with death experience in a tiny car-thing in a developing country.

First world problems to the max.

Also, the price you Brits pay for our cars is crazy absurd...

Hacker finds info on P100D on firmware 7.1.

One computer wiz claims to have have hacked into Tesla’s firmware and discovered a reference to a juicier battery.

Self-proclaimed white hat hacker (the “good” kind of hacker who tests and improve security systems) says he discovered a secret in Tesla’s firmware 7.1, but he didn’t want to tell the world outright what he discovered, so he made Tesla Motors Club forum-members work for it by obfuscating the secret with a hash.

TheSHA256 hash, a one-way function, would either require forum members to guess and check to decrypt the code (this is called the “brute force” method), or to look it up in a hash dictionary. We don’t know how he did it, but forum member LuckyLuke decrypted Hughes’ hash and discovered its meaning: P100D.

In response to a fellow forum-member decrypting his secret code, Hughes responded on Twitter

On the forum, Hughes implicates that he didn’t just find reference to P100D, but he also found the graphic for the P100D badge, saying:

There have been references to the P100D in firmwares as early as 2 months ago. They finally added the badges to 2.13.77. I mucked it up a bit by adding a crappy background (it’s a PNG with transparency in the firmware)...

Are there more secrets to be found in the firmware? Hughes implies that there are, writing on the forum:
There are quite a few things that are in the firmware that I’m not prepared to share publicly. Just like the P100D has been in there for months with my lips mostly sealed. I don’t want to spoil all of Tesla’s surprises.

What’s Elon Musk’s response to all this? Well, when Hughes suspected that Tesla was onto him, he sent Musk a tweet. He responded in typical Elon Musk fashion:

Finally got some time behind the wheel of my Brother-in Laws P90D over the weekend. If it felt silly from the passenger seat, it feels even more so when you're driving it... I've driven nothing like it.

In a 'normal' car, when you plant the throttle as you roll along the rate of acceleration builds as the revs increase and the noise of the revs increasing adds to the sensation. In the Tesla, the acceleration is instantaneous. Initially, it feels very strange, but you soon get used to it. I did several 'insane' mode launches, and it really does feel quite uncomfortable

After the silly stuff, I was most interested in how the car drove 'normally' - and it's surprisingly good. Good driving position, decent ride quality, steering (in Sport mode) has good weighting and it's easy to place the car, reasonably stiff in roll, good turn in, perfect traction whatever the conditions... I liked it. A lot. I thought the oddest sensation would be the lack of noise, but it turned out to be the regenerative braking... as long as your anticipation of other traffic is good, you hardly need to brake when driving normally... just a lift and the motors slow you enough in most situations :)

Very impressive.

Few pictures from when we picked it up Christmas Eve...

I've seen a few model Xs now in the bay area. I think the proportions are pretty odd, but the detailing is much better than the model S. The gullwing doors are immensely stupid.

The X isn't out in the UK yet, and I'm reserving judgment until I see one.

I read the gullwing doors are there for practicality reasons - getting kids in and out of big, wide cars in car parks is a pain in the proverbial with regular doors.

I haven't found it myself, but a couple of people have mentioned a YT video of an X with a trailer and Alfa 4c on it out dragging a 4c over 1/4 mile

Different angle with less perspective distortion.

I'm more interested to see if they've done some substantial revisions to the interior.

That's...okish.

My thoughts exactly. At least they haven't gone down the Model 3 route and completely erased the faux grille. As things stand, I prefer the current model but I'm intrigued to see what else has changed (full LED headlights it seems).

I would bet due to complaints they give the 3 the same small upper grille.

Aside from the smoothed front bumper, it doesn't look too different from the outside. If rumours of a price hike are to be believed, I'm expecting the interior to be radically overhauled.

This... and the addition of a 100kwh battery pack.

The interior is the same other then two new interior décor choices-Figured Ash Wood and Dark Ash Wood .

There is no news on the 100kwh battery.

The price is only increased by $1,500

Looks great, hopefully this front will be on the production 3.

I hope not, the Model S interior is the best thing stylstically about Tesla IMO.
