I would say that this statement says alot about yourself...

I know for a fact I did not do that...

Well, I agree with him that it was a big problem that could easily have been fixed. The base engine they started with on Shift allowed weight, grip, aero, laptime and other penalties to be assigned depending on what kind of assist level the player chose. They dropped all of that. The game code supported all kinds of other lobby options, such as forcing people to drive in a certain physics mode, or forcing them to drive from the in-cockpit camera. They dropped all of that.

So while you can join a game and make it as sim-like as you wish, you would always run the risk of some kid running it at "normal" rather than pro grip, an insane "alien" setup that is only workable with damage disabled, and the steering assist on (which would assist peak slip angles rather than assisting grip levels as with TCS/ABS - vastly more powerful), with no penalties of any kind, blowing you away all around the track.

On the PC you could get out of this somewhat by picking VLAN matches with your pals, on the consoles, not so much. It kind of sucked and I hope they really take a hard look at it in the sequel.

I don't think anyone was recommending online lobbies allow different settings for different players... it was about how to handle the single player.

No one wants the (apparent) current setup to work online either... you don't want to find out you are racing with people of other levels who then have associated damage levels.

It mattered for the single player leaderboards too :(

Nothing quite as discouraging as putting in a killer lap in the Zonda R and finding someone has found the exact sequence of input to feed into the steer assist, and the exact places where the cutting-detection will let you get away with cutting a corner, and the exact spot to bounce off a wall with damage turned off, and posted a time a minute shorter than you can ever manage doing it properly.

If anyone is interested. This standard car took one hit to the front-right bumper.

And how does this whole level thing fix that? Corner cutting is still apparently very much in...

Nice! but why in the world does the Suzuki have a mudflap in the middle of the underside?

In the WRC world, most cars run with a few mudflaps in the bottom (of the car) including in the middle of the car. Sorry if this sound offensive but it reminds me of the time one of the marketing guy from NFS:SHIFT accused PD of modding the Subaru WRC race car:

“Actually, when the footage of Gran Turismo 5 came out of GamesCom with the doors flying off, we were all like ‘what the ****? How are they able to do that?,” said Tudor.“But then we looked closer and saw that they had fitted a roll cage to the car, which is fine, but it’s not quite so realistic.”

Yes, he was referring to only race cars (in GT5) have full extensive damage but ignoring the fact that all (sanctioned) race cars come with rollcages.

BTW, here's the Suzuki with the middle mudflap:

is this real or in-game ?

I just got the game yesterday, I have to say I love it. It's a bit overwhelming at first. There is so much to do. Unfortunatly I didn't play as much as I'd like, but I did a few laps with different cars and tracks. This morning I came to Gtplanet and realised, I didn't even thought about damage! Stupid! I was way to busy with diferent things.

I do think the have managed to make GT5 a true drivers RPG. Think about it. A complete leveling systeem. Features and expansions to be unlocked as you go along. I really love it and will play this game to death.

You asked for damage i give you damage :)

Is it actually linked to levels? Has anyone confirmed it yet? Or just premium/standard cars and time spent bashing?

I don't know how leveling fixes it because I never said it would? :)

I got the game yesterday. I took the B and A licenses, and went on a few tracks, and got up to level 6.
I was very disappointed to see the cars bump off like bumpercars made out of admantium / diamonds.
If it's a racing simulator, it should at least simulate the fact that you live in a physical world with Newton's laws + and that metal is not indestructible.

Damage was supposed to be the big new thing in GT5, and was advertised. I feel like I am suckerpunched. NOT GOOD!

And don't get me started on interior views!!!

I've been playing all night and have seen 0 car damage anywhere in the game and have seen no options in any of the menus to enable it. I even crashed front first into a guard rail at 100mph and my car just bounced off good as new.

I am very disappointed.

I also see that cars come with milage, but am unsure if it has any effect at all on the car. Along with maintenance like oil changes at the shop, but don't know what good they do.

I am hearing a rumor that as you level up, more damage is unlocked. Example: Level 40 will see more damage than level 20. Is that true??

Damage is a major dissappointment no doubt, a sim cant be a true sim without real damage, but game is still good, but that is a major knock no doubt. Not even the biggest gt fanboy can deny that,

I noticed this morning, in online on the RX-8, the damage is scripted.
It's already "pre-rendered"

So, not real-time.

I like it more than the real thing of PD, because they need to perfect it. I don't want cars to look like harmonicas.

What do you guys think of a damage model thats very close to reality?!
Think about it, you like it or not? At first i was like "this would ruin fun alot" but the more i think about it the more i like it.
I mean even if i crash your r8 at 50 mph it would like crush your car (depending on where you hit it obv) and cause lots of cr repairing costs. You would need to grind out more cr at lower tiers to get the car repaired or buy a new one.

Wouldnt be that the ultimate thrill not to drive too fast and always take care when you drive?

I know there are limitations on what they can do from the car manufactors side but it would just be my dream feature...

we dont know yet even after all these reviews...

we know this :
damage exists but its system is not transparent, no one knows how it works exactly...

Thanks for the answer, can you confirm the quality of the engine braking ?

Yes, seems to be quite realistic imho.

I haven't noticed any mechanical damage yet. It's easy to get cosmetical damage on a premium car, a standard car need to be crashed a lot harder to get any dents.

Regarding mechanical damage, yesterday I had a big impact on SS7 in a premium Ford Focus. After that the car started to pull very slightly to the right. I had to constantly correct it at high speeds on those straights.

I got my copy 3 hrs ago. Can`t say much about the damage system, but a few minutes ago me and my brother raced against each other in arcade modus and my F40 got some noticible visual damage.
Sorry, english is not my language, but what I want to tell you is that I immediatly noticed the damage on the car after a big crash. The bumper was seriously damaged, the left side of the hood had alot of scratches and was grey/black on some parts.

My brother raced a standard car and he had some damage too, his bumper had some deformations. Plus, talking about graphics, during game play his car looked just a little bit worse then my premium F40, eventhough some textures had bad resulutions.

Can`t say anything about damage in GT Life, need to play it a little bit more.
