Where's the "I don't want damage at all in GT5 crew" gone.
There being quiet on the subject.
Present!!I didn't care about esthetic damage and I still not care at all!I played Rfactor for years without damage and I was always fine with it!but please give me a good and realistic mechanical damage system!!

i think the damage is actually looking really interesting, would be nice to see some particles such as smoke from the engine perhaps the odd flame here and there. and maybe as the bodywork trails the track the odd spark shooting up here and there.

Hey, Asane, is there some particular setting that needs to be turned on for damage? 'Cause I've seen videos without damage from the same demo.

No, there are not setting except, physics, trans, tires, assists.
Stores have different demos, that's why you're seeing some without damage and some with.

So, basically, someone who dares to criticise GT5 can't drive and is an overall loser at racing games? :banghead:

Yes, didn't you get the memo where it's clearly stated those who can't drive express their frustration in pointing out all the possible flaws in GT5?

Regarding the damage, it's much better than I was expecting on the production cars at least, since I clearly remember a video where someone's trying to damage the 458 Italia and it only appeared to obtain a few scratches and some panels loosening up a bit.
In fact it's all we probably could or should expect to be honest and it surely beats my expectations whether it's fully accurate ( which is never going to happen even when they technically were able to ) considering the limitations or not.
It's a question of perception I guess, if you drool over crashed cars in general the observation it isn't fully accurately modelled might actually be the least of your worries.
Since the damage probably won't be permanent ( but different depending on impact which is significant in my opinion ), whether or not it appears very real is of temporary ( meaning that particular race ) concern, unless you have the ability to crash the cars in PhotoMode....

Alright ASANE, thanks for providing an answer that only makes a little bit of sense. I mean, we've seen a demo from the Portland Best Buy without damage and then someone else posted picture from the same store with of the damage. So it's obviously not because different stores have different demos. That would be incredibly random to have two separate demos with everything the same except one has damage and the other doesn't. I would assume more that it has to do with the difficulty settings.

I answered because we played the same demo at the exact same store, no reason to be an a-hole just cause I was able to answer first. There are no selectable options except the ones I listed, there might be 1 or two more but that's it. I've played the game on all possible levels from beginner to pro with standard and pro physics and I noticed damage on all of them. It would make sense if damage was more pronounced on PRO, however, my last race before leaving the store was on BEGINNER with arcade physics and aids on and the damage after one big hit was noticeable.
It's just as random that there might be different demos as it's random that only a few stores have the demos, PERIOD. Just for you, I'll go back to the store, and try this all out all over again.

What's the latest now: Tires not deflating? Good god, and I thought the "2D trees" discussion was getting a bit silly.

And you sir just described this place and certain members to a "T".

I guess GT5 and the internet bring out the worst in people.👎

Regarding damage carry-over, the reason they can't carry over damage to another race is because its procedural and real-time - your car's shape and specs at the end of a certain race would have to be carried over, and since it's not pre-canned, for each car you would require more memory to do so, which is not possible because:
1. Hardware limitations (PS3 may be a killer machine but it still has limits, especially in RAM)
2. The models are very highly detailed and therefore are obviously very large files.

BTW B-Spec is going to be more thrilling now, imagine you leave the work to Bob and co. for the night in a 24 hour race, and you wake up in the morning to find your car stuck at the end of the Nurb straight on 15th lap only, because your driver was getting mentally tired and braked too late and ended up hitting the wall.

Mouai.... this damage looks like paper bullet. :yuck::grumpy:
I m curious to see more, in realtime and with maybe Slowmotin déformation.
For me a mix with this and Dirt damage will be nice.

Okay so I hate to be the one to repeat quote these big images, but....

Look at the damage on these two cars. It's almost exactly the same around the right headlight. I don't think this is a no-two-crashes-the-same damage model.

Now look here, the right headlight has moved way inward :)

+1
I would rather see a lame damage graphics and have excellent damage physics to the car than vice-versa.

to me this looks like a Work in progress damage and not the finnal build.. Something about the headlights and the way the hood is bent dont look right.

True, but hopefully there's at least some system in place that deducts credits post-race for fixing, then!

It'll be interesting to see if damage has different levels based on race length. Say you have damage set to max, and do a 2 lap sprint and a 2 hour enduro... will damage be exactly the same for both? Won't fixing during the race basically have to be allowed? Or will enduros have the damage turned off?

Interesting interesting. The damage is looking a lot better, I'm impressed, other than the baby blue 458's headlight floating up in the air like that, clipping through all the metal.

Damage looks very near complete in the shots on the news page. Noticed from the cockpit view the damage wasn't visible because the damage was so low on the hood or on the front bumper.

That's how I envisioned it would be. I don't think KY and PD want to totally detract from the cockpit view by allowing the hood to impede our vision (thus making us want to switch views).

Wow, I'm much more impressed with the damage model now, its gotten much closer to Grid which in my opinion still has the best damage of any licensed racing game. I'm also glad to see headlights breaking and moving position because thats something most games dont do because of uptight auto companies who want the car to still be recognisable. Also, if this damage is only for the premium models then what does the standard car damage look like?

For those who havent seen the new damage build its on the GTP News Page,

Then go crash your own car in real life if you are so exited about car damage.

It's a freaking game, and it's 2010. Games will never replace real-life.

At this point Kaz would probably slap you and shout "What do you want from me?!" at you...

OMG i can just mentally picture this, and i agree

This is all pretty mild compared to--say--a World of Warcraft forum. Man, talk about a whiny sense of entitlement from that player-base. They could be out in a desert, dieing of thirst, and you could offer them water--only to get flamed for not providing ice or a fruity flavoring or carbonation.

Also, Anonymity + Internet = Jackhole.

But I digress... the damage shown so far is a step in the right direction, whether it's a bit 'off' or not. I anxiously await the final product.

...

Is it November 2 yet?
