It's kind of a throwaway, seen-it-a-million-times shot; same with showing the herds of people in suits and ties walking back and forth to work in New York City for every movie made about the Big Apple.
The movie appears to be so full of clichés that it's an assault on even my most childish of thoughts. But I'm sure the driving stunts are quite good, if I hadn't seen 30 years of them so far, it would probably be worth watching.
Well that is true of course. I also notice that the older you get the more you get bored by the average movie. It's hard/impossible to reinvent everything.
But imo that is more a story problem. I watch a movie and most of the time I have an idea how it will end after the first 20 minutes.
But when a movie takes place in Tokyo, why not showing how Tokyo is ? I've been to Tokyo several times and it is crowded as hell, almost everywhere at any time. It's no cliché. Also the racing/drifting scene is no cliché, they are there every night. The police is not as strict in Japan, you don't get locked up for racing, most of the time you are just advised to leave the place.
And what is the alternative? Do you want a movie taking place in Tokyo and not showing its sightseeing spots? So that everybody realizes that 90% of the movie was shot in the USA? No thanks
Imo it really depends on your personal taste. I love Japan, Tokyo, japanese cars and drifting. So it's a great movie for me, even if the story is average and some rapper is talking BS every 5th scene....
If you prefer for example EU/US cars, are not that keen on drifting and if you woulnd't care if the movie takes place in HK,Malaysia or Brasil, then it's probably not worth watching for you....
Hey slidesquad#1. how was it ? You can't just say : I watched it and then dissapear, you cruel monster
Don't tell us the story though, just why you liked it/ disliked it. How are the drifts, how is the sound, a lot of CGI, is the story at least ok? etc etc
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/fast_and_the_furious_3_tokyo_drift/ doesn't look that bad imo. Most of the negative stuff is about things I already knew that it would be average, like story and acting...
