Democrat wins 79% of the vote in a safe seat, GOP opponent refuses to concede and acknowledge they lost.

I truly wish that I didn't think this was going to end badly for the US as a country, but with every day and every new story that wish seems to get less and less likely.

This is going to be the new normal which Americans will have to accept. GOP candidates in a Trump era cannot concede gracefully if they lost, and will always allege voter fraud and other so-called election irregularities. Their anti-socialist, culture-warrior agenda is so self-evidently supported by their constituents, that there is no legitimate way in which a GOP candidate can lose in a high-profile race. And the Democrats' agendas are so socialist, communist, and un-American that the only way in which they can win is if the election is rigged in their favor. This trend is most troubling in that GOP politicians, who are instantly branded as RINOs and risk being excommunicated from the party if they deny the voter fraud narrative, will craft, and attempt to pass legislation which will actually rig elections in Republican's favor, most notably by restricting non-white Americans ability to vote. How ironic that the party that complains about widespread voter fraud and "rigged elections" is the one that actually wants to do this.

Respectfully, I wonder if this thread is the appropriate place for this news. I posted on it in the America thread (which is by no means to claim ownership) because it was regarding a special election held in 2022 to fill a seat vacated in 2021 when the previous representative passed away.

I do think this thread is relevant, but perhaps at this point only for developments related to January 6th and the odd 2020 election legal challenge.

Whatever you decide, I respect your discretion.

It's a fair point and in all honesty it was 50/50 as to which I posted it in.

Rats. Hundreds of ****ing rats writhing and squirming in a human suit, trying to get out.

I watched some of that last night. Trump’s ability to give off a speech that gets his crowd going has fallen off hard. Plenty of times they were so disengaged, he might as well have just said, “Let’s go Brandon, amirite? No one knows how to tell them to go more than me, they say”.

Man spent 5 minutes talking about his crowd and even that has dwindled. “Twuenty fuives miles of cars, never heard of before. Crowds as far as the eye can see.”

There's a crowd in the back beyond the flood lights, but it isn't any bigger than the initial crowd in front of him.

New batch of January 6th Select Committee subpoenas includes rat****ers Boris Epshteyn, Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani.

Also on the list is Rudy's fart sponge, Jenna Ellis.

Application for injunctive relief on the issue of White House records subpoena (Trump v. Thompson) has failed 8-1 in the Supreme Court based on claimant's arguments alone and the question regarding executive privilege remains unanswered. Justice Kavanaugh concurred with the decision but disagrees with the lower court's ruling on executive privilege and suggests it must apply. Justice Thomas as lone dissenter would have granted the application.

Thomas is smoking crack yet again. I don't hate Thomas, he can be very thoughtful and well-reasoned. But executive privilege isn't even drawn directly from the constitution, and the tests for executive privilege don't seem to remotely cover this particular circumstance. Thomas can be very hard-lined about what's in the constitution and what isn't (e.g. abortion rights). But then he abandons that hard line completely with executive privilege, which is similar to abortion in its derivation from the constitution. Suddenly that hard line about what's explicitly called out in the constitution is abandoned, and for what? For a circumstance where there is no dangerous precedent - a circumstance in which we're investigating the president's role in nothing short of overthrowing the US government. How on earth does executive privilege need to apply in that case? Especially after the president has left office and the next one has said it's not going to damage the function of the US government to release that information? The executive branch is essentially releasing this information voluntarily, and he'd hold it up based on a non-sitting president?!?

It's pretty crackpot to be a dissenter on this.

Word on the web is Thomas' wife is a huge supporter of what happened on Jan 6th, & therefore, Judge Thomas has some conflicting interest in his vote.

Judge Thomas has some conflicting interest in his vote.
I'd have loved to see him recuse himself on that one.
The Court at present, bare minimum starting with Gorsuch and the circumstances of his appointment, is kind of built on conflict of interest and I really don't think recusal is in the cards--either self- or by congressional mandate. I just don't think there's a mechanism for the latter (Marbury?) short of impeachment and conviction, which is unlikely to happen (indeed it never has, as Samuel Chase was the only impeached Justice and he was acquitted) with current legislative demographics.

Breyer desperately wants the public to have faith in the Court's legitimacy and I'm pretty sure Roberts is right there with him, but it's looking more and more like it's a political pawn--just consider Cruz's posturing on Fox News over the prospect of the Court not overturning Roe v. Wade "after all the money that has been raised, the Federalist Society and all these fat-cat dinners."

A Texas man was arrested today in Travis County, Texas, for allegedly sending threatening election-related communications to government officials on Jan. 5, 2021.

Chad Stark, 54, of Leander, was arrested this morning in a law enforcement operation carried out by the FBI. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance this afternoon at the federal courthouse in Austin, Texas.

This is the first criminal case brought by the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force. Announced by Attorney General Merrick B. Garland and launched by Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco in late June 2021, the task force is leading the department’s efforts to address threats of violence against election workers, and to ensure that all election workers — whether elected, appointed or volunteer — are able to do their jobs free from threats and intimidation. The task force engages with the election community and state and local law enforcement to assess allegations and reports of threats against election workers, and investigates and prosecutes these matters where appropriate, in partnership with FBI field offices and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices throughout the country as warranted.

“The Justice Department has a responsibility not only to protect the right to vote, but also to protect those who administer our voting systems from violence and illegal threats of violence,” said Attorney General Garland. “The department’s Election Threats Task Force, working with partners across the country, will hold accountable those who violate federal law by using violence or threatening violence to target election workers fulfilling their public duties.”

“Today’s arrest confirms the FBI’s commitment in our pursuit of justice against those who choose to threaten violence against anyone participating in our elections,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray. “Election workers striving to protect our right to a fair and democratic process deserve nothing less than the utmost safety and assurance they can accomplish their roles without interference. The FBI will continue to focus on our mission of protecting these individuals and the important work they do, as well as every American’s right to vote.”

“The intimidation of those in charge of carrying out free and fair elections in this country is against the law and cannot go unchecked,” said U.S. Attorney Kurt R. Erskine for the Northern District of Georgia. “When someone threatens an election official working at any level of the voting process – whether that be an elected office holder or a volunteer poll worker – our democracy is put in jeopardy. We are grateful to all of those who endeavor to secure our elections and our democracy. We must protect them all.”According to the indictment, on Jan. 5, 2021, Stark allegedly posted a message to Craigslist entitled, “Georgia Patriots it’s time to kill [Official A] the Chinese agent - $10,000.” The message stated:
Georgia Patriots it’s time for us to take back our state from these Lawless treasonous traitors. It’s time to invoke our Second Amendment right it’s time to put a bullet in the treasonous Chinese [Official A]. Then we work our way down to [Official B] the local and federal corrupt judges. It’s our duty as American Patriots to put an end to the lives of these traitors and take back our country by force we can no longer wait on the corrupt law enforcement in the corrupt courts. If we want our country back we have to exterminate these people. One good loyal Patriot deer hunter in camo and a rifle can send a very clear message to these corrupt governors.. milita up Georgia it’s time to spill blood…. we need to pay a visit to [Official C] and her family as well and put a bullet her behind the ears. Let’s be very clear to our local law enforcement who have stood down and watch BLM antifa destroy our country and kill our citizens yet you’ll step up to stop Patriot supporters you’ll enforce face mask and you’ll close American businesses??? Remember one thing local law enforcement the key word being local….. we will find you oathbreakers and we’re going to pay your family to visit your mom your dad your brothers and sisters your children your wife… we’re going to make examples of traitors to our country… death to you and all you communist friends.
Normal people behaving normally.

I feel like realistically all Trump has to do is keep this tied up for another 5 or 10 years and it doesn't matter what the verdict is. He'll be dead or so old and senile that the result will be largely moot. I put the chances of him ever facing any sort of real consequences for this at somewhere below **** all.

There isn't a whole lot more tying up of these materials that can happen because if he keeps fighting this, which he can reasonably be expected to do, it's headed to the Supreme Court next where they can either grant or deny executive privilege or delay a ruling themselves eitherprocedurally or just as an outright delay, the latter of which has the potential to harm the Court.

In the short term, there's basically no chance the committee's investigation is resolved before the mid-terms, so Republicans are getting something they've wanted from the outset. Something big happening to Trump himself was never a realistic goal, but findings do still have the potential to be damning and those around him aren't similarly immune.
I'm happy to see that only a month and a half later the committee is in possession of the documents.

Crazy fast given that Trump would surely have liked it to get dragged out as long as possible. ~45 days start to finish is astonishing.

The sad part is, even though they have all this evidence, nothing is going to happen to Trump. Even if he somehow manages to be indicted, there's no way the US would allow a former leader to end up in prison since that would look really bad to the rest of the world. China and Russia would have a field day with that while North Korea claimed that Kim Jong-un personally arrested Trump. My guess is that there will be some backdoor dealings where Trump just goes away along with amnesty for his family in exchange for shutting the hell up. Either that, or he gets Epsteined by people who want the US to save face.

Also, while I think Trump is guilty based on what we currently know, I'm guessing if you investigated more politicians like this you'd come up with some substantial dirt. I don't believe for an instant that any of the presidents in my lifetime (Reagan onwards) are even remotely clean. Granted, they didn't publically try to overthrow the government, but I'd wager they all have their fair share of serious crimes.

I'm kind of over "Trump must be made to pay." That's not what this is about for me. I want to more fully understand events that transpired surrounding the 2020 election. I know I'm not alone in that.

The thing is...the GOP explicitly does not want these things to be understood. The crooked mother****ers have railroaded this from the very beginning. They want people to know as little as possible about their efforts to marginalize and subvert the will of more than 81 million Americans.

Unfortunately, the people who need to hear it the most, won't. Even if the January 6th Committee releases all the documents and comes out and says "Trump planned and bankrolled the whole thing and here's the proof, including phone calls, photographs, etc." there will still be an alarming number of people who will think it's all part of the conspiracy...you know the people who eat red pills like they're Mike and Ikes.

It doesn't matter that they won't hear it. They're ****ing garbage, sure, but they're also a minority.
