The Weather Thread

[AnthonyD1993]

Today is probably the most active weather day in the Lower Peninsula in years. Currently under a tornado watch and multiple severe thunderstorm warning, multiple flood warnings, and of course multiple tornado warnings have been issued for the state.

EDIT: Now under a Tornado Warning for my location.

[TB]

Well that's just not right.

[TB]

Come on!

[TB]

It's about time we get some rain.

[AnthonyD1993]

Almost the entire Lower Peninsula is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. I'm currently under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

Ya it was nuts, I couldn't believe how hard it was raining, and the wind was pretty crazy too:

Looks like Lansing really got it bad as well, even had some plane flip over at the airport:

Three small planes flip over at Lansing airport during severe weather, officials say

Officials say two planes flipped on their sides while parked at the time, and another flipped upside down while being towed.

Yeah, when it hit here it hard. Dundee and Monroe had an 81 mph gust confirmed. Lenawee county really didn't have too much except for the heavy rain.

[Spacegoat]

45mm of rain here last night and a good amount of rain so far today(not checked the gauge yet).

Haven't had more than 2mm since around last October.

[TB]

Well, that's not awesome.

[AnthonyD1993]

Not a good sign to see a Mesoscale Discussion with this wording this close to my location. I'm just slightly to the east of the line for that MD. Going to be a fun night. By fun, I mean rough.

So, the latest European heatwave... yesterday in the UK we've had a new June record temp both for max and minimum temperature (36.1*C and 23.5*C respectively), earlier forecasts at the start of the week were suggesting 39 or even 40 which is borderline terrifying for this time of year...

That somewhat pales in comparison to continental Europe, especially France (widely 40*C+ and a new all-time temp record of 44.3*C) over the past couple of days, this isn't even taking into account how especially humid it is due to the air being drawn from the mid-Atlantic instead of the Sahara:

All in all this year is shaping up to be the eye-opener regarding AC for these NW areas of Europe, the "it's only a few days of the year" mentality is in tatters... and we're not even into the business end of summer yet.

[Scaff]

Yep the humidity is the killer, it's been peaking in the high 70% where I am, and that's no fun at all.

It has been like this since 14.00. Like walking into a thick soup. Ridiculous.

Yeah, but that one time it was 40 degrees in Italy and even though 18,000 people died it was no big deal so it shouldn't be a problem anywhere else...

And so on.

(if you don't get the reference, good; it means you don't spend an unhealthy amount of time on here)

Quite literally. 37 degrees (which we got in Suffolk today) at 77% humidity (which we've had in Wales, Scotland, and the south coast today) will kill you in a couple of hours' exposure.

Yup.

Forecast for the foreseeable future: high/low/humidity

91/69/66 (today)
91/74/65
93/73/64
94/74/63
89/75/70 - 50% of rain
91/72/68 - 40% of rain
91/73/65 - 40% of rain
93/74/62 - 35% of rain
95/76/58 - 35% of rain
95/76/55 - 40% of rain

The bad thing is late July and early August are usually the worst for hot weather and high humidity. So we have that to look forward to. And I'm also glad it hasn't rained in a few days with another few with no rain forecast. FOr about 3 weeks prior, it rained almost every day, with maybe 1 day in there that it didn't rain.

[TB]

Can't wait.

[Joey D]

We're going to get something similar. I'm glad I bought that window ac unit because it would be terrible.

I just keep telling myself in 120 days I could have snow.

[Barra333]

Yeah, forecast 'feels like' temps of 45-46C (113-114f) on Tuesday - Wednesday for me too. Air temps will be 34-35C, which is enough without putting swamp conditions on top.

[Joey D]

It's storming out, which is no big deal, but all of a sudden it sounded like someone was dropping a load of rocks on my roof (we have a metal roof). Guess we got hail:

[Cowboy]

Dodged a bullet from this yesterday morning. The storm made a right turn to go east of where I am but the sky going really dark (on top of being foggy) was interesting.

Just be glad it wasn't snow, imagine shoveling snow in this heat.

We are into our second 'heatwave' of the year - it's hitting around 28 deg C, which is high for Scotland.

As a result, I am not playing GT7 because my big old Sony Bravia is like a radiator and it's just too hot in my office for the TV 😅

We travelled to Bath on the 24th June, arriving at our accommodation at the peak of the day when it hit 36°C. It was a converted shipping container without air conditioning and with big glass windows along one side. We stepped in, realised it was much hotter than outside, then immediately left and found a hotel with air conditioning only to find it couldn't keep up with the temperature. The room was 30° until late at night when it was able to recover and begin cooling the space normally.

The next day we explored the city, and almost every air conditioned space we came across was unable to keep up with the temperature. I've never seen anything like it before (admittedly I stayed home during the time we hit about 40°C in 2022). M&S Food was the only place that had ice cold A/C throughout the day.

[Barra333]

If you have nothing better to do, cinemas often have good AC.

[Dennisch]

Currently in the Department of the Lot. And it's hot. Tomorrow is even worse, and Tuesday might even become terrible.

Feels like 116. Yep. Staying inside!
