So what exactly is a Touge? I see a few of these online but don't quite get what they are. Are they drift contests? 1 vs 1? Group races? Time trials?

Touge is a mountain road. They can be either drift battles or Initial D-style cat and mouse racing.

It's a shame there aren't proper Touge-like courses in GT5. Course maker tracks with complexity 10 aren't the same thing, especially since they all run in looped configurations. The closest theme which can approach them is Toscana on -5 track width, but the scenery is too much open without not pronounced and constant elevation changes (also, in general, aside the road layout, they look dull and boring).

Touge Racing can also be 1 on 1 in a staggered format. It's really awesome. Body contact is usually prohibited. Using roads similar to the picture above (blind, hilly, narrow) you or your opponent starts in front of the other and you run down the hill (or up). The distance between the two cars (say 1 second) is carried over to the second run. Who started first last run starts second this time, and you do it again. Best time difference wins. For instance, let's say you were 1 second behind in the first run, but you were 2 seconds faster in the second run being in the lead... you'd win. You can pass, but it's more fun to really ride right on their bumper trying to make them make a mistake. Grid had this, and it was an awesome principle (poor put into practice with the AI).

I hate it when people refer to Touge as drifting. Touge literally means 'Pass' in Japanese.

Yes it does, but not pass as in over-take. Pass as in trail or mountain road.

Mountain Pass. Race Driver Grid has a couple good touge series in it's career mode, along with a great explanation video. Night Togue is the hardest with oncoming traffic, no driving line and the only visibility is your head lights.

Tarmac covered Pikes Peak would be very close to an optimal Touge track. :D
It is going to be eventually completely covered in tarmac by the end of next year, as far as I know. I'd like to see that in GT5 along with Stelvio Pass (which is a bit longer and steeper than Pikes Peak, and narrower) and maybe something from Japan .

It might be tempting to get carried away with the romanticism of the "underground" nature of touge, but for me it's all about the fact that individuals are bringing their own creations to "battle" against each other according to a unique set of rules that is well suited to racing on narrow public roads. I.e. making use of what's available.

The possibilities for "giant killing", for instance favouring maneuvrability over power or opportunities for tactical driving, are part of the appeal, too, for me.

Like Mt. Akina! :)

Kaz has to give us some point to point tracks we can create with some more themes. I think we will get some more. 👍

I would like a lot 👍 Actually, I'm sure that I saw some trailer about GT5 that showed P to P tracks... Maybe some tools to put some stuff on the scenarie like trees and rocks...because the scenario is really boring:grumpy:

this is touge, a mountain pass(stelvio on pic)

basically every mountain pass in the alps can be classified as a togue

Pikes also has few guardrails, so if you screw it up, you've done screwed it up proper. I've watched a few vids of Monster Takajima bouncing his car off the side of the mountain, simply because not doing so would've resulted in certain death.

Slam against a mountain, or death?

I'll take cake, please.

Before Kaz puts in more themes, I think he should add a feature to adjust the elevation change, from 0-1000 ft. Therefore we can at least create a downhill/uphill course. Maybe even add a feature to adjust how long the track is. like 0.1 miles to 10 miles.

You probably have seen quite a few online and there's a few which is part of the GTPlanet community.

GTP has 3 Main Touge rooms.

1) GTTC (Gran Turismo Touge Championship) which runs on Saturday 5pm. (GMT-5)
This one is closing down after one last event. Run by scorrp.

2) LotS (Legend of the Streets) which runs almost everyday.
This one is based on Initial D. Different events runs on different weeks. Run by me.

3) TDC (Touge Driver's Club) which is new.
This one has strict rules and regulations hosted by Nightingale.

All three have these in common:
- 1 vs 1
- Cat and Mouse Battle (Example)
- Sports Hard Tyres
- Heavy Damage
- Real Grip
- Road production cars only
- Custom Maps

See Touge One Stop Shop (TOSS) for everything Touge on GTP

If that road was in GT5 I think I would never leave my steering wheel! Thats just amazing!

Don't be too sure about it. I've driven the Stelvio quite a few times in real (mostly on the bike, but some times with cars, as well (Mini, BMW Z1), and I have to say while it's fun to ride, it does get a little bit boring - like most Alp passes, it's basically just a 100-300m straight with a sharp, narrow 180 at the end - and that over and over again.

I'm more a fan of nicely flowing roads with less straights and some 45-120 bends/curves (the best example for me is still the SS62 in Italy, from Parma to Pontremoli).

^ For PD always resisting of bringing one-way/point-to-point tracks, heres a good start:

^ It reminds me another Initial D real life-based mountain pass:
