While this is not what I am eating immediately, but rather was from a couple of weeks ago, I still feel compelled to write about it, so here goes.
Based purely on Solid Lifter's
recommendation all the way back from April, and the fact that I happened to be at the Fontana racetrack, I went down to that dusty street corner to Acevado's Deli and Liquor to sample this allegedly awesome burrito.
and walked out with this:
I had ordered a carnitas burrito.
At first, I was a little skeptical, maybe even slightly nervous about how good this could really be. I had walked into this dinky, dark and kinda dirty convenience store ran by an old Asian couple in literally the middle of dusty industrial Fontana. Wait, I came here for
Mexican food? There were a few people waiting in line to order and a few more waiting to get their food, so alright, I thought to myself, it can't be THAT bad.
Walking to the back, I finally see the kitchen area where food is ordered and made. Behind the high counter/wall, you can hear Spanish coming from the workers. Standing in front was a small Asian lady, who barely spoke English, taking orders. I looked at the menu; there were few meat choices, and I was debating between carnitas and red beef. The problem is though, I don't know what
red beef is, so I decided to play it safe, and just get the carnitas burrito. I ordered my food, and waited for about 15 minutes before it was ready. Finally, I have my burrito, it's the moment of truth.
I got in the car, unwrapped the burrito and took a large bite into it, and what I had, was by far,
the most flavorful, tender burrito I have ever had. That burrito was absolutely awesome. The tortilla is not the hard, flat, one dimensional stuff that you get at fast food places, but it's not been tried to soften and "fluffed" up to the point that it becomes a soggy mess. It's just got a tiny bit of lightness to it. The meat was perfectly flavored, juicy, tender and packed a savory punch in every bite. Mixed with the meat was just a tiny bit of jalapeno peppers, enough so that it adds another flavor, heat and dimension to it, but not so much that it overwhelms you. It was by far the best burrito I've ever had.
The burritos are actually pretty big. That entire burrito was just filled with carnitas meat. It didn't cost anymore than eating at Chipotle, and for the amount of food they give you, it's actually a pretty darn good deal. I highly recommend anyone who ever goes down to that area to try their burritos; they have some just fantastically awesome burritos.
