What do you think will happen to car racing whenever the gas runs out?

(envisions the future. electric cars racing at the breakneck speed of 70 mph!)

When gasoline-powered engines go by the wayside (probably within the next 40-50 years), auto racing will take whatever form the rest of us do in our street cars. At first, they will be limited somewhat by the new form of power, but with time, racing will be right back to where we are today. Never underestimate the ingenuity of racing engineers. We will permanently lose the engine notes, however :(

They already run on Methanol in some US race series.
Methanol or Ethanol actually yields a bit more horse power, - at the expense of mileage.
So no fossile fuels needed for racing.

Audi and now Peugeot have proven that diesel is a viable fuel for racing cars.
Diesel can be produced from several food source plants.
So as long as we take care of the soil, (by rotating crops and such) we should have a capability to produce fuel for internal combustion engines.
And as the nature of men is, what ever we are "rolling" we'll be racing.

This year the Indy Racing League is running 100% Ethanol.
Good ol' moonshine.

Any way you can find to propel a vehicle forward, someone will want to race it. Some just won't be as exciting as others, like those solar car races.
