The PS3 cost 600 USD in the US and even more in Europe

To spend that type of money on anything you must have good reason to do so.

So why did you spend all that money on the PS3?

Personally I bought the PS3 because I wanted to play all the great exclusive franchises like Gran Turismo 5 and Final Fantasy

Sure these games wouldn't be available for about a year after I bought the system but I could entertain myself in the meantime with blu-ray movies and other great games like Heavenly Sword, Lair, LBP, Assains Creed, Call of Duty 4 etc

I voted for exclusive games, but I got it just as much for Blu-Ray movies which I have 50 so far.

I say exclusive games like Moose. I also got it because I do not like Xbox/Xbox360, Blu-Ray player and because I thought it had the best potential in the future, in the next year or two I expect Sony to be leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.

mostly the games, GT5 being the main reason, reliability and the fact that I always have had SONY consoles would be the next reasons

My main reason was for Blu-ray.

But I knew I was going to want the next Gran Turismo game, so obviously that made the decison all the more easier.

Now that I have it, I must admit the games, online service and Media Server functionality has grown on me, but that never came into my mind when deciding to get a PS3.

Knowing that GT5 would come out in the future was an obvious reason for me, but more so, i wanted F1CE really bad!! Plus my parents bought a 47" HDTV and i convinced them to let me get it so that we could watch blue rays (netflix=rad)... so yeah

For GT5, but mostly because of everyone I know with a 360 has sent it away atleast once for repairs. I'd love to own one for games like Bioshock and even Gears of War, but unfortuantly those games aren't good enough to make me want to put up with the constant fear of it breaking...yet again.

Basically GT5.... and Final Fantasy XIII+ unless they'll require sixaxis, then I'm not gonna bother.

Lately it's kinda taken on a different role as a replacement for when my 360 is being repaired... so I'll probably buy any multiplatform titles for the PS3...unless they want to use that moronic sixaxis. If I wanted to wave my arms around like an idiot I'd buy a Wii :P

I needed something to do for the summer.

Now I can stare at my empty bookshelf of games! What a great investment!

It could be worse, you could be staring at the empty space where your 360 was while you wait for it to return from the service center for the 3rd time!
Now that's a great investment!

Everything! Blu ray, internet plus free online play, backwards compatibility, my Sony preference, And I've played the system more than 360 yet I've never had a single game lock up unlike with my 360. Motor Storm had some issues but that was fixed in the first patch.

Things that will reinforce the value: Home, Unreal Tournament 3, GT5, PSN games and much more..

Because the PS3 is sexier than all other consoles put together...

Turned off it looks like a piece of art - and turned on, it's even prettier...

Well I've had all the Playstations sice the beginning and this was a purchase sine the PS1. I voted for games since GT is the only game I absolutely have to have.

edit:

all of what others have said, BTW im going to be a Sony sales rep for the day when my aunt and uncle come round, they were going to buy a stand alone BD player, plus my aunt is addicted to Hot Shots Golf, so its the best bet for them.

Similarly to some of you I was one of the 1st NA adopters of the PS1 and PS2, thank you very little ;) But seriously, both consoles served me quite well. Only the 1st gen PS2 died on me and that was only after about 7 years of pretty regular use. Given the wear and tear on the cd/dvd drive motor I felt the longevity was quite reasonable.

However re: the PS3 I was probably most swayed by the combination of F1:CE and the 16-17 month 0% financing deal I got from Best Buy. As long as I pay it off by Sept 2008, like that's much of a challenge at a paltry $30 per month, it's same as cash. Hell they're just about paying me to own the kit :D

PS BR discs playing on the ole 34xbr960 are nice too.

1. Exclusive games like GT5 - the only game I will never live without.
2. Attractive launch titles: Motorstorm & F1CE
3. Free online play, internet, Blu-Ray etc.

Well firstly because Im a devout Sony fan (all their electronics) and Ive always had Playstation's, never any other consoles other then a gameboy and advance.

Secondly the technology and robustness, blu ray and alot of kit for your money, plus some fans did a stress test and it survived being on in fridges and saunas for hundreds of hours, now thats quality! Sure it may scratch easily but under the delicate exterior lies a battle tank!

Thirdly because I think the Playstation 3 console looks amazing, very grown up, high end AV equipment image. Its nice just to look at! The wii and 360's style dont just cut it for me.

Oh and also the games!

My reason for buying a PS3 isn't one of the pole options. I wasn't going to buy the PS3 untill GT5 releases and read some of the reviews. But a couple off days ago I got an email from GTP with some info about GT5. I was surprised to see that it really looked that good. Hopefully GT5 prologue (PAL) will be released in november as said.

That's the only reason I bought the PS3 a couple of days ago instead of waiting till next year.

I voted the first option because it mentions GT5, lol. But actually, there are three things that I could equally have chosen. I bought it for exclusives, but there are also exclusives on the PS3 and Wii I would like as well. The Wii has less exclusives that i'm interested in than the other two though, and the Xbox 360 has serious hardware issues. So I decided that the PS3 would be the first console I'd buy. But I still plan on getting the other two someday down the road.

Working in a games store, I like to own all the consoles. Though, truthfully, the PS3 was a gift that I didn't expect; or at least not so soon.

Well i bought it for the exclusives - so far i am very dissapointed. My ps3 is never turned on and my 360 is never turned off.

The game release schedule is poor and i have to say the only thing i like about it is Blu Ray!

Well one problem is that you are comparing a console’s game library to one that's been out a full year more and one that basically forced many developers to program for by abandoning the Xbox for the 360.

And yet, funny enough, games (exclusives, multi-platform, & network) are coming out for the PS3 at close to the same rate they came out on the 360 during the same timeline following its launch, even with PS2 sales still going strong and even outselling both the 360 and PS3.

But yes, even if you don't like any of the eighty or so games currently out on the PS3, there is always the Blu-ray player to enjoy, as well as the 1080p upconverting DVD player, SACD player, MP3 player, etc. :)👍

Heck, the PS3 even manages to be a some what decent web browser and video conferencing tool for those that might not be able to, or find it inconvenient to plug their computer into their TV.

That said, at least when looking over PS3 game reviews and sales figures, clearly many people are enjoying quite a few games already on the PS3, but I completely understand and respect that people’s game preferences can for many, be based on purely subjective reasons, and thus why one person will absolutely love a game, but at the same time another person with the same demographic profile might absolutely despise it. Neither is wrong, it’s just a personal choice.

80 games??? - Theres only about 20 different games on the shelves in the UK - and most of the decent ones i've already had on the 360 - the only two that i was interested in was motorstorm and resistance and there has been no other games released i thought were worth the money!

Theres alot of first party and great third party titles coming soon...

I suppose that the problem of owning both consoles, I would personally pick one and stick with it....

Thats the thing, all the good games are coming soon. The PS3 really doesnt have very many good games that are worth the money right now. Warhawk just came out, and it is def. worth the money from what I have seen. But to be honest, some of the games that are supposed to be saving the PS3 this fall have been worrying me because of their terrible reviews. I.E. Heavenly Sword and Lair.

Well not all, but yes, many of the most anticipated games are coming out soon.

Well let's not over exaggerate things, after all, you can find a terrible review for even the very best games, and there are also very good previews and reviews for both those games, including a perfect score of 5 out of 5 for Heavenly Sword.

EDIT: In fact, look how out of place IGN's review of Heavenly Sword is now compared to all the other review currently listed in GameRankings database:
  • 70% IGN 8/24/2007 7 out of 10
  • 88% Game Informer 10/1/2007 8.75 out of 10
  • 83% Electronic Gaming Monthly 10/1/2007 8.33 out of 10
  • 85% Game Revolution 8/30/2007 B+
  • 84% Cheat Code Central 8/30/2007 4.2 out of 5
  • 100% Play Magazine 9/1/2007 10 out of 10
  • 90% GamePro 8/25/2007 4.5 out of 5
Even with IGN's suspiciously lower score, the average score is still 85%, which is quite impressive. As I said, looking at one or even just a couple bad or great reviews without considering the source and without considering the average of many reviews may easily lead you to have a wrong impression.

I find the problem with reviews in general is there just one person’s opinion and you have no idea what kind of biased approach they may have had when they played and wrote about the game. I much prefer to see large collective averages, like you see on IMDB for films, where not only is it next to impossible for enough "biased" reviewers to impact the overall average, but they also let you filter the results to more closely reflect your personal taste, at least in terms of demographic.

I also remember the two suspiciously bad reviews F1:CE got well before it even came out and it turned out they were way off base, and even appeared they may have written the review based only on the demo and what they read about the game. It's all a painful reminder that in this day and age, all it takes to be a "qualified" reviewer is to have a website or find a website willing to post your review.

Yes around 80. The list in that link include them.

motorstorm and resistance and there has been no other games released i thought were worth the money!
Again, that might be a personal choice, and it may also be based on not knowing all the games available to you, and might be based on believing what someone else told you about the quality of a game, or lack there of. Unless I had the ability to read your mind and know what you like I can't list all the games that you would definitely really enjoy.

I will say again though that clearly many have found many of the games, both disc and downloadable, to be extremely appealing based on comments, reviews and sales figures that I have read. I personally am not a hardcore gamer, but considering how cheap most of the PSN games are, I bought all but a handful of them, and most get regularly played, if not by me, by my family and friends.

So yes, you may very well be pleasantly surprised by any number of those 80 games, but other than sharing our personal opinions, there is no way to know how many of them will actually appeal to you specifically.

I will say though, if you like driving games, and I assume you do if you participate on a GT inspired forum, then F1:CE is absolutely marvelous. Don’t make the mistake others have by judging the game by the demo. It’s a very poor reflection of what you get from the actual game. Also, even though it came out for the 360, so maybe you already have it, surprisingly DiRT is a very good game, and Codemasters has noticeably improved and enhanced the PS3 version.

These are just a couple examples though. There are a lot of games I, my family, and friends have enjoyed playing on the PS3, but as there are already threads specifically for discussing opinions about the PS3 games, maybe we should move this topic from this poll thread to keep from getting off-topic?
