Windows... 10?!?

Windows 10 will be a failure. Besides the return of the start menu, Microsoft hasn't learned from their mistakes. Social integration kills everything it touches. The concept of apps does NOT fit a desktop OS, as @Grayfox stated earlier. We are once again forced to sign into a Microsoft account to fully use the damn system. As well, it seems you can only have one window actually showing on the screen; correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't find a way around this. I open another program, and the window that's already showing, minimizes. It's bizarre.

Of course, it's all focused on the annoying "flat" design. They should not hinder user friendliness just to make the system visually appealing.

Your not really forced.

It is just they have a Violet background and in purple text they have "Use Local Account" as well as "Skip Wireless Connection" for the WiFi part.

The fact they don't use high contrasting colors is so most people wont see it, thus my use of the word trick, if the system was suppose to be easy to use and friendly, it would have high contrast setup as in normal black and white

So if I do not wish to create a Microsoft account, can I still get full usage of the machine?

I'm running a local account on 8.1 and I can tell you the only thing you can't use is the One Drive Metro App. All other app's allow you to sign in individually.

Be aware that if your installing from 8.1 fresh they sneakily removed the 'use a local account' at the bottom of the screen if you are connected to the internet at the time. Do not give setup your Wi-Fi details otherwise you can't create a local account.

The concept of a Windows login being linked to a Microsoft Account is beyond crazy from a security point of view IMO. Theoretically with just your email password they could gain access to your whole computer and local files from anywhere in the world.

Signs are not looking to good for Internet Explorer if reports are accurate.

Yeah I read about this, it's probably a good idea to kill off the Internet Explorer name purely because it holds a bad image and it's really not true of the current IE. I think the Metro IE app is actually pretty good and fast.

IE6.x was the worst, every week a half dozen security patches

It is what made me go to firefox, Firefox 1.5.0.2
Man that was about 8 years ago.

I am now using v28, I dont like the newer ones.

IE6 was a train wreck, probably caused 80% of all computer security issues!

I have also been using Firefox since back in the 1.5 days on all my W7 machines. On my W8 tablet I find touch IE is very good. Pity Mozilla canned the development of a Firefox Metro App.

I don't like the new Firefox releases either, the number cycle is crazy, they are getting more and more bloated for some reason, the side menu thing is annoying.... and Flash hates it!

Shame MS force you to have IE on your PC with Windows Vista/7+
In the days of XP you could remove before installation, now if you try to install windows with IE removed it wont work

It's because they stupidly baked Internet Explorer into Windows Explorer and apparently the OS will have issues if IE isn't there! People have been asking for there to be a choice to totally remove it for years! Now with Windows 8 it's even more baked in because the Metro app's use it embedded.

I know the europeans have that Windows N thing which doesnt have it

So some new screen shots of windows 10 have leaked showing the new internet browser codename Spartan. Also the new taskbar has been leaked showing metro style icons and notifications.

Finally desktop Windows has the metro design language, for years it looked stupid with Windows 8 stuff in one place and Windows 7 icons in another.

Bleah. Looks like the browser on my tablet. In fact the whole thing looks more like a tablet than a real computer.

They're not going to get me to switch back from linux this way.

It's just a change to the skin of the taskbar and the edge of the window...

Windows 10 will be free for windows 7 8.1 and phone 8.1 for the first year out. So if you wish to get on the bandwagon for free it's time to do that.

If you dont want to upgrade, too bad. People just have to get used to change from what I'm seeing in this thread.
No, we can complain about stupid changes and get them fixed instead of just waiting for things to get worse.

Thing is microsoft think the desktops will die off in a few years and we will all use tablets like they do in startrek

But in the real world,
Desktops are going to be used for a long time
So going touch crazy is not always a good thing.

Businesses will use manual input which means keyboard and mouse and a UI that works correctly for it(Cairo UI(old windows UI))
The average user should be allowed to choose between the old style and the new, not just be given the new one and told to "live with it" like they did with Office 2007 and its Ribbon UI

Funny thing... with how badly touchscreens deal with actually being... touched... on a daily basis, I'm seeing more and more public touchscreen systems (Bank queueing, biometric work time-in stations, commercial interfaces) with keyboards attached to them because the touchscreen is permanently borked after a year or so of constant use.

The free Windows 10 upgrade is tempting, but I'm going to wait a bit for feedback before going up.

I don't think anything can be as bad as the Windows 8 on my current laptop. Except maybe Millenium.

This is me at this second. I want to try Windows 10 on my laptop, but I want to know for sure how it really is from others first. I can attempt to try it on my older, slower laptop, but that's probably not such a good benchmark compared my current, faster one.

I will definitely upgrade my 8.1 tablet (Win 8 really excelled on tablets), as for my Win 7 laptop it's very likely I would take MS up on the offer but maybe hold back a few months till they sort out all the launch bugs.

Windows 10 Technical Preview is out. Downloading now and going to try it. (Not on an actual machine though) (VM) and see what is going to be like and if the free upgrade would be worth it.

Edit: For PC users of Win 7, 8, or 8.1 will have the upgrade via Windows update, so there really isn't any way of getting out of it unless you turn off automatic updates.

So does that mean my perfectly functional Win7 box will automagically turn into a Win10 box unless I turn off automatic update?!?
