Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Running Abarth

A fan-favorite event returns in the latest new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, available from this morning, along with a special GT World Series tie-in race with boosted rewards.

Race A brings back a special one-make series which features custom-tuned cars decked out in custom liveries for a door-banging hot-hatch race that highlights the breadth of possibilities available in the game.

It’s not possible to use a garage car for the event, so you’ll need to make a choice of your preferred color scheme from the ten modified Autobianchi A112 Abarth models available. There’s actually four basic livery designs here, with a range of colors and sponsors — and given that it’s a 12-car field, perhaps a little disappointing that there’s not more of them to reduce duplication. Also no purple option; boo.

The custom tune more than doubles the power of these dinky 80s’ hatches, with 197hp available, so it’s a good job that they’re all wearing Racing Hard tires even if that can make them a bit twitchy. You’ll certainly spot the controller users in this race.

Other than that, it’s a basic four-lap race of the full Suzuka Circuit with just one twist: the False Start Check. You’ll need to hold the car on the brakes (or handbrake) from the moment the final start light comes on and until they go off to start the race. If you move at all, you’ll be hit with an instant torque-cut penalty that lasts as long after the start as the amount by which you jumped it.

As an additional point of note, Driver Rating (DR) updates revert to their normal “off” position for this race, after a few weeks of experimentation. Your Sportsmanship Rating (SR) will still be affected though, so perhaps avoid too much door-banging and off-track excursions.

Race B brings the GT World Series Los Angeles tie-in event as previewed a few days back in a separate announcement. You should, therefore, know what to expect already so let’s move on…

For those not keeping up with GT announcements, or anyone who needs a refresher, the race is a replica of the Manufacturers Cup final in shorter, sprint form. You’ll only be able to use Gr.3 cars from the 12 finalist brands for the race, which is a six-lap run around Road Atlanta on Racing Medium tires.

Under the current public Balance of Performance (BOP), the needle is very much in favor of the power cars. The top 100 leaderboard for practice (effectively qualifying) times is dominated by the BMW M6, the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT, and the 2018 Nissan GT-R Nismo, but all 12 should be able to put up a decent fight. Don’t take it as representative of the real thing though, as GTWS events use a custom BOP.

This week’s Race C is a bit of an unusual one, featuring no strategy of any kind — making it one long sprint race for the Gr.4 cars.

The race takes place over 12 laps of the full Red Bull Ring circuit (the Short Track would have been an interesting one if no other strategy was required), with free choice of Gr.4 cars on Racing Hard tires.

As usual, the nature of Gr.4 BOP means that certain cars quickly rise to the top. An early leaderboard glance makes it look like being another week of AWD supremacy, and in fact there isn’t a single time set in anything other than a Genesis G70 or Mazda Atenza in there right now.

With standard fuel consumption and tire wear rates it’ll be a case of running 12 laps as fast as you can and no need to trouble the pits. Nor is there a mandatory stop.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, November 10.
