There’s a bit of a strange look to this week’s Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, with two races featuring specific car lists, a tie-in with this weekend’s Gran Turismo World Series final with a big credit boost, a tuning event, an oval race, and one which looks shockingly pay-to-win.
Race A actually covers four of those bases at once and is as a result one of the oddest we’ve ever seen in the ranked (except not; Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates are off again) online multiplayer mode.
The weirdness begins with the fact it’s a ten-lap race around the Daytona Tri-Oval, making it a foot-to-the-floor event with no braking necessary. It does run into dusk though, which is rather picturesque if you survive that far given 16 cars on track in a slipstream battle.
Then you have to take into consideration the six-car line-up which features five Gr.3 cars and a vehicle from the recent Power Pack paid DLC. Not only that, they’re all required to be garage cars — those which you own — because full tuning is enabled. You can do basically whatever you like to the Corvette C7, Viper SRT, Ferrari 296, Lexus RC F, and Porsche 911 RSR Gr.3 cars and the Ford Mustang American Racer, so long as they’re on Racing Hard tires and put out no more than 562hp (or 570 quasi-metric units).
Last but not least, the Mustang is overwhelmingly faster than any of the other options: in practice (which amounts to qualifying), the top non-Mustang is 1.5 seconds slower than the top time. That basically means you’ll need to own the $29.99 Power Pack DLC for a realistic hope of winning this one and — even though it’s inconsequential due to DR/SR being off — that makes it GT7’s first ever pay-to-win race. Boo.
Race B is ordinarily the “normal” one, but this week it also takes on the mantle of a tie-in bonus event for the Gran Turismo World Series finals in Fukuoka this coming weekend.
The race mimics, but doesn’t exactly copy, one of the three preliminary rounds of the Manufacturers Cup, comprising a five-lap race at Sardegna Road Track A in the Gr.3 cars from the 12 qualified brands.
You’ll therefore need to pick from the dozen representative brands’ vehicles, although it looks like the Ferrari 458 we expect to be used at the finals is replaced in this specific event with the new Ferrari 296. Still, the field is relatively well-balanced so whatever you choose should be competitive on the required Racing Medium tires.
As a boost to celebrate the finals, your credit rewards for your results in this race are increased ten-fold, which we’re sure won’t lead to any last-lap mischief over 12th and 13th places…
It’s actually left to Race C to be the routine one this week, with a rare strategy-free event that sees the Gr.4 cars doing battle over nearly 32 miles of racing.
That encompasses exactly two laps of the Nurburgring 24h course (Nordschleife plus full GP circuit), and there’s neither mandatory tires nor required pit stops this week. You’ll need to pick your preferred Gr.4 car — and there’s a mix of options, not just the Citroen — and make sure it’s on Racing Hard tires for a straightforward two-tour race.
Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, December 22.
