Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial: Go Go GTO

Another Italian icon from the late 1980s features in the latest Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial, available from today.

Built as a return to more animalistic vehicles, and handily in sufficient numbers to give Ferrari an option to homologate the car for Group B racing, the GTO was very much a product of its time. Originally made in a run of 271 cars (plus a 272nd, built for Niki Lauda), every GTO was left-hand drive and finished in Rosso Corsa from the factory.

With a 2,855cc, turbocharged V8 — and yes, that’d be a 2.9, not a 2.8 of the commonly used sobriquet for the car — sitting in what began as a modified 308, the GTO was the fastest roadgoing car in the world when launched. It’s little surprise that its stillborn racing variant, the Evoluzione, went on to give rise to the famous F40.

It’s a pretty tricky car to tame, but your job this week is to do just that around the Interlagos circuit in Brazil. There’s Sports Medium tires fitted to make that job a little easier (two grades stickier than standard), but it’s still a pretty slippery affair.

Currently the world record for the event has just sneaked under the 1:40 marker at a 1:39.972. That sets the gold target at a 1:42.971 for now but we’re not expecting that to last all that long — even if there is a quarter-second gap at the top of the leaderboard. We’d say you should aim to hit a 1:42.3 or better, but there could be some time to come and we’ll look at it again next week.

The Time Trial for the recently added Lancia Delta rally car remains in place for another week too, taking on the short Grand Valley South loop on a reasonable facsimile of an asphalt special stage.

Times here are remaining pretty close to what we’d expected after last week’s initial flurry of activity, with the record sitting at a 1:10.627 and the top ten barely separated by a tenth. That indicates there’s not much time left on the board, so if you can beat the 1:12.745 that’s the current gold target time you ought to be safe enough — and a 1:12.5 or better ought to be plenty.

Another ten days remains on the third event, which also comprises the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Virtual Championship qualifier. If the series itself isn’t relevant to you, the time trial functions as a regular event with regular prizes too — though the bronze boundary and reward are both more generous.

There’s still no challenge to the top time, set by 2021 World Champion Valerio Gallo, of 1:46.347, which means the 1:49.537 gold target remains in place. Given the more competitive nature of this event, that probably means there’s not too much time left, but people have been known to sneak in late.

In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. As it’s just you against the clock and not a direct, head-to-head multiplayer event, PlayStation Plus is not required.

You’ll usually need to be within 3% of the fastest time globally once the event finishes in order to secure “gold” status and a 2m credit bonus prize. There’s smaller prizes of one million for being within 5%, and 250,000cr for bronze at 10% off.

The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge usually remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. You can look forward to the next new Time Trial arriving at 0700 UTC on Thursday July 10.
