Weep for This New Civic Type R, Destroyed Before it Even Got Home

Ah, the joys of driving. Picking up your new car, blasting down the highway, playing your favorite driving tunes and getting punted in the back by a careless driver. Well, maybe not that last part.

Greg Ellingson found this out the hard way as his new 2017 Honda Civic Type R met with an ill fate. The car enthusiast had just picked his car up from Boston when disaster struck. After hitting traffic on Philadelphia’s I-95, the $39,000 hot hatch was smashed into by a careless driver from behind. The force was so great it caused the new Civic to also smash into the car in front. Ellingson was distraught and took to Facebook for venting his anger.

I didn't even make it home….Jackass not paying attention hit me full on and pushed me into another car.Update:…

“He wasn’t on the breaks when he hit me, he was on the gas.”

Autoblog contacted the unlucky collector to ask more about the crash. It seems this is a case of carelessness rather than an honest accident. Ellingson highlights that there was considerable distance between the Civic and the car in front. So much so, that the driver was able to take his hand from the radio dial and grip the gear shifter before making contact with the car in front.

The pictures speak for themselves and any car-loving individual will wince at the totalled vehicle. With barely 150 miles on the clock, this Honda couldn’t have been in better shape. Ellingson works at a Honda dealership as a Sales Consultant but couldn’t find the model of Civic he was after. This started a hunt to find a reasonably priced 2017 Civic Type R, leading him to Boston. Unfortunately, the hard work in finding the vehicle was tossed back in his face shortly after picking it up.

It is not yet clear if the 2.0-liter, turbocharged Nürburgring record-holder is a write-off. Luckily, Ellingson took out special car insurance that will get his money back in the event of it being totalled or cover repair costs if its deemed road-worthy. However, this cautionary tale provides a clear message — never underestimate the idiocy of those around you on the road.
