Toyota Hosts 24-Hour Gran Turismo 5 Challenge in Sydney

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QZacNDd6vI

(Yes, this FT-86 trailer is from last year.)

Toyota is hosting a 24-hour Gran Turismo 5 endurance race at the 2010 Australian Motor Show, currently being held in Sydney. Kicking off this Tuesday, October 19th, two teams will compete on the Nurburgring in a pair of Toyota FT-86G Concepts, with driver changes once per hour for 24 hours (with 24 individual drivers for each team). An IGN Australia editor will be competing, but other than a few press releases, I’ve heard surprisingly little about this challenge or its participants.

Regardless, it will be particularly interesting to see if this reveals a fresh build of the game. If properly implemented, it should include everything that a 24-hour endurance race implies, such as pit stops, tire wear, and fuel consumption. Better yet, it should also give us our first look at night racing on the Nurburgring and – possibly – even weather, but I won’t be holding my breath for any of these revelations. If you or anyone you know will be attending or participating in this event, please let me know.

Thanks to all who sent this in!

    NEW NEWS!!!
Toyota just called me confirming I had the fastest time for last Friday. I have been invited by phone, to come on Saturday for some sort of knockout competition. Will follow with more details when I revceive them in an email tomorrow.

i wonder if the cars will back fire when down shifting like gt4 that would sweet on gt5 and if it does it will be something different

    1. Luke (zdenko)

Nah, I thought that feature was crappy and overused in GT4. Since when do road cars backfire??? Mufflers are there to stop that.
You rarely even see race cars backfire in real life, so if the feature is put in it better be relistic.
ie, the car should not backfire on every gear change.

    2. DarthTurismo

We have already seen this in versions of the demo that also showed tire marks left on the tarmac. I agree that it shouldnt be over used and limited more to race cars that have less restrictive exhausts and thus more chance of actually backfiring….. let’s wait and see!

  3. ZOOSO

Hmmm ive had limited access to the net over the last five days, so have only just now heard about the 24 hour enduro :-( …. was only half a mile from the Sydney motorshow today ! Will try to get there tomorrow.

  4. boblikepie

This endurance race isn’t right. If it’s a 24 hour endurance race in Australia they should have Bathurst and instead of using the new 86. They should have the new Ford and Holden battling it out for 24 hours.

    1. Sigmaviper11

Toyota is the primary sponsor, so it wouldn’t make sense from a business stand point to highlight a car company thats on of your competitors.

  5. djKyoto

I’ll be there tomorrow to check this out Jordan. I actually won a ticket through IGN ahha. I’m guessing no one else can have a crack at it till the 24hrs is done, but i’ll watch IGN to their bit, then hang around till after it’s done to have a go at it.

    1. DarthTurismo

Not all of us were whining…. actually i don’t want to go see some old demo that has been doing the rounds for the last 10 months…. i’d rather wait for the finished product which i know is going to kick a55!!

    1. TakeshiSkunk

It’s an AE86…and I’ll be really surprised if there’s no premium AE86. It’s one of the most popular cars in the game.

  6. eludethis

Yes tire wear in GT4 was pretty unrealistic. I mean I can grind away in my prelude at mid ohio all day with Z rated toyos and not have to worry about needing new tires. And trust me I make them babies scream for traction.

  7. ken_b

How cool! Would be even cooler if we were blessed with a release date…that we could hopefully believe..that would be awesome! Ok, we wait, looking forward to it. Peace.

  8. syaieya

I just hope that they have a harder tire compound that won’t wear off as quickly. I don’t know of many types of races that require a pit stop for tires in a sub 10 lap race. The Formula Polyphony car from GT4 was a terror to drive in any long races just because of how quick those tires would wear out.

  9. trk29

To tell you the truth if they don’t show a finished build for this 24hr race then it is not good news. The game was supposed to be released in a few weeks. So it should be done.

    1. z06fun

Exactly, if the game is really finished as claimed, they could/should actually be using a finished build. That would be very encouraging.

    2. V12Blender

if they used a finished build, they would be showing off the full features of the full game and leaving nothing else to the imagination well before release. that aint PD’s style. we know this. and i think it’s better that way. surprises are good, no matter how long we have to wait to get em.

  10. Woggster

Lol this is the only reason anyone would go to the motorshow in Sydney anymore, because there’s hardly any car manufacturers attending it haha.

  11. GT'ireland

im guessing this forum will be pretty quiet for a while when GT5 has finally released…though im sure we may be racing each other online anyway…the wait is taking its toll on me,i will end up pulling the hair out of my head at some point.

  12. GrandeP

Using demo builds is basically to keep us on our toes while we wait for the game to come out. It makes sense to use a demo build rather than full version before it’s released.

  13. NBH

I hope pit stops are included, would look stupid having people changing over down a straight or pausing the game. PD have confirmed the day to night transition and pit stops so it’s no secret so let’s see it! Fair enough if dynamic weather is left out.

But anyway I thought this game was finished and practically ready for burning onto Bluray and they still use demo builds?

  14. D.Holland

I live in melbourne, which is at least 8-10 hours south of Sydney, and I’m considering travelling up If it’s still running on the weekend, thats commitment for ya!

  15. blackjack

I live about an hours drive north and I’m definitely considering a mission down there after work. If so I’ll be sure to take my Digi SLR to snap off so pics.

  16. adam

Hey GT Ireland – do you have a website? (I’m assuming you are a group and its just not your handle!) I’m from Belfast myself wouldn’t mind signing up :)

    1. GT'ireland

not a group, though not sure what you mean? Your the first person that i know of on this forum thats local,im from warrenpoint..i take it your also a GT fanatic?

  17. MSH

I don’t think they will have night/weather or even pit stops. just my personal opinion. They have not shown full functionality yet in any demo, so why should they now? Even if it is for a 24hr challenge…

    1. GrandeP

PD aren’t exqctly the type of company to reveal all details of the game and include screenshots of it in action. Just because you haven’t seen it, doesn’t mean it ain’t in there. ;)

    2. MSH

      That’s actually what I’m saying ;)
Of course all this will be in the final game, but as they have not yet showcased it all together in action in a demo, I don’t think we will all of a sudden see it in this particular event.

    3. IVKillerVI

Well, with recent news about the delay and everyone being able to safely assume the game is complete, I think they might show a few new things.
It seems like with every demo they have one new feature, and I cant think of much that they haven’t put in.

  18. Luke (zdenko)

Hey guys, I played the game at the Motorshow last Friday.
Nothing new, this version doesn’t have damage, and it’s on some city track, not sure which one, could have been in rome??? Had roman architecture.
However physics felt much better then the version I played in the GT Academy Finals in Melbourne.
I’m now curious who is competing in this cause they didn’t ask any of us(as far as I know) who got to the finals of GT academy here in Australia.
Also the guy running the stand, knew nothing about the game, nor did he know anything about the FT-86. Where do they get these drop-kicks from??? Oh yes they had 2 stands, but the girl in the other had even less of a clue, they didn’t even know what the GT Academy was.
Oh yeah and I set the fastest time of the day :). Well I left at 9:30pm and it was still fastest, and the show closes at 10pm, so I assume it was fastest of the day. I’m going again this Friday so I’ll see if I still have the fastest time.

    1. helix_9

I got to play it on saturday morning. It was locked to Rome and had a time limit of 2min 30sec. Only enough to just get 2 quick laps in. I’m lucky I got there early and got a few goes. They said it was set to 5 minutes the day before, but had to reduce it because of the weekend. The people running the booths were pretty lenient. They even said I could reset the game and try another track if I wanted, but I didn’t get a chance because people were waiting. I did see them starting it up though. I’m pretty sure it’s the Gamescom build, but could be wrong. I really don’t think there will be anything new for the 24 hour race. It’s clearly an old build of the game. But you never know, they could pull something out of the hat.

    2. - Ice -

Jordan srated that the video’s from last year already. This is not new footage. So it verywell could be a new build as this video only uses the car to be driven. That’s not even the Nurburgring. Hold ya horses with assumptions.

    3. trk29

It has to be a new build other than what you guys were playing. How can they do a 24hr race on a two minute time limit.

    1. TakeshiSkunk

I’d personally love to see Sekia Hills and Nikko…I was hoping we’d get more D1 locations than Fuji and Tsukuba given the dedicated drift mode and additional D1 cars, but it’s probably not all that likely :(

    2. Sigmaviper11

Haha, I really do wish that they included more D1 locations. Or for that matter just drift locations in general. Ebisu would be nice as would Sekia Hills and Nikko as well as some of the Euro tracks and American tracks. Hey wait, Australia’s bound to have drifting too, get some of their tracks!!!

Damn, now that I think about it, as just new lace to be, I doubt they’ll put in Gold Coast Indy any time soon.

    3. TakeshiSkunk

While we’re discussing tracks that need to be in GT5…when are we going to see Brands Hatch? :( One thing GT is really lacking is a track with that sort of British/Australian flow to it. I’d be perfectly happy if we just got an original track in that style.

    4. Sigmaviper11

Brands Hatch. . . MMM that’d be nice. I also feel Silverstone is a must, for both drifting and circuit racing.

      Brands Hatch wet anyone?

    1. ICEMANZIDANE

if they have seted the setings to 24h then u have to record the game more 3 hours
i think they will set it to 2h
      every 2h day/night changes

    1. tvensky

Ive seen pit stops in so many GT5 videos (and even GT4 opening video), now is time for some in game fotage of it, indeed! and all the other stuff!

    2. HugoStiglitz_420

seems very interesting but am I the only person that thinks in B spec you should be able to schedule pit stops?

    1. caasimun

hmm…wouldnt that beat the essence of endurance! all u have to do is if u get tired of driving switch to b-spec mode and hopefully ur drivers can go another 12 hrs
