Disappointing for Hamilton... But he'd already thrown that lap in the first sector... Not much chance of even beating Button after that.

Might be he was saving the last set of tires. Wonder if they managed to get Vettel to use an extra set of softs?

Really disappointing qualifying session. It looked entirely like the McLarens had Red Bull's number... But that accident changed everything.

To Probably save the Set of Supers .Pretty sure he could have gotten a second lap but it was impossible for any of the Drivers to improve their lap really.

Dissapointing Quali ,Sadly I think the race result is pretty much got Seb all over it.

They only need one lap for that, and the tire warmers would have gone on at the announcement of the session restarting. It's more likely it's the same set, but since it had heat-cycled and cooled off in the pits, it had gone off, already.

Bit of bad luck, but McLaren has been caught out this way before. Waited till the last minute and best conditions to make their lap... Good idea in theory, because the track would be at it's fastest then... But leaves you vulnerable to sudden rain showers, traffic, and the odd red flag.

But give credit where credit is due... That was an amazing bit of driving by Vettel on that pole lap... On the absolute edge, banging every curb, the car almost oversteering in parts. Shame the accident robbed us of a truly exciting showdown between him and Hamilton today.

Yes for Schumi in 5th! NO for Vettel's pole... I'm sorry, he's a good driver but he wins all his races from being 1st in the 1st corner... so there is no fight... Why yes for Schumacher? coz he's had fantastic races before and I'll always support him =)

So last week it was Schumi and the Torro Rosso's "holding up" Hamilton to let Vettel win... This week it's Massa doing that? Hamilton is paranoid...

That Explains it ,Really Bad luck by Lewis but thats Racing.I didn't catch this but did Massa Ruin Lewis's hotlap before the crash ?

Seeing the Perez crash brought back memories of senna's death for some weird reason. Very glad he is going to be ok but Having all the officials and medics standing around the car gave me chills.. Also reminded me of my utter despise for Adrian newey and his role in 1994....

I don't think Massa was obstructing at all. It looked like Massa was going plenty quick enough on the run up to Casino.

Just wanted to pop in to say that as a Mexican myself, I was incredibly proud of his Q2 showing and was really upset seeing the incident.

Snap oversteer for Rosberb much in the same way and Nico's crash could've been a lot worse if he hit that techpro barrier going as fast as he was.

Now I'm just at a loss as to what Sauber's going to do for the race. Esteban's their only other driver, but mostly just a test - hasn't even done a Friday practice iirc.

Sauber has to field two cars don't they? Who'll go out? All I can think of is reserve drivers of other teams such as Fisichella, De La Rosa, Senna... I don't know. It's tough.

Thoughts go out to Perez and his family.

Other wise, an amazing lap put down by Vettel with the added hinderance of a clock stopped @ 2 minutes made this quali. intense. There really was no point in going out again, they all wasted tread. And Massa really put it to Button out there.

Onto to the GP, should be a thrilling start 👍
 
All the best to Sergio Perez. It was definitely very tough for him in a heavy crash in just his first year and his debut in Monaco. The side of the car was completely crushed but the tepco (?) barrier and the monocoque of the car did a great job to keep Sergio safe in the car. The FIA's decision to actually remove the bumps on the chicane after Rosberg's accident was a correct move, if not it could've got even worse for Sergio.

As always, how much I thought Alonso was going to be in front Vettel did a much better lap. Congratulation to the drivers. I'm wondering if Hamilton could get his lap time taken away because if I'm not mistaken he cut the Nouvelle chicane. Correct me if I'm wrong though...

Interesting that Karthikeyan didn't go out for a lap as suggested by HRT that he had a damaged reat suspension from FP3, but I'm still wondering if this is just a tactic to not set a lap and just go through the race without even thinking of the 107% rule?

Also in interesting fact given out by those guys in the Mercedes camp saying that out of the rest of the lap around Monaco, the driver will only point the steering straight for only 10 seconds out of the rest 80 seconds.

Unfortunately the team cannot field another driver especially after FP3 as what the rules says. If it was yesterday, they could fit in someone else. It is unlikely he will go out racing if he has a concussion but we'll wait for the official words. I know it's tough for you too mate but keep strong, he'll be fine 👍

Yeah those sheets the marshals were using were concerning.

Was hoping they weren't needing to do another on-track tracheotomy or something horrible like that.

Speaking of which; the way he braced himself for the impact by putting his hands up by his head was such a fast reaction. Pretty amazing, saved his hands.

No, Hamilton pretended Massa did, but in reality Massa made way in time. He could have started from the front row if he hadn't aborted his lap. He should stop making mistakes and stupid judgements when he claims to be the only driver being able to beat Vettel in a slower car. Today was his best chance this season to score a pole but he messed it up.

Let's hope that Perez can join the race tomorrow and that Button can outrun Vettel towards the first corner. Should make for an entertaining race :)

That accident brought me memories of Karl Wendlinger's in '94, at that time with crappier barriers.

Hamilton (McLaren) really screwed up this one...
So long in the pits, and then the urge (though logical) to be the first one out left him a really long time waiting on pit exit, losing a lot of temperature and pressure on his rubber.
No way he'd get everything up to level in one lap.

Maybe Hamilton putting his hands up when passing Massa but I don't think it affected him in the end as I think Perez crashed at a similar time which would have invalidated his lap due to red flag but not sure on that. My thoughts were with Perez and the feeling of being annoyed by Massa of pushing on his out lap went away straight away seeing the accident of Perez.

Hope Perez hasn't got any serious injuries, and recovers well in time. I can't see him racing tomorrow. I know what he will be doing tonight as a fellow Man Utd supporter though so he could have something to cheer him up today.

I'm not sure what's the purpose of those sheets, perhaps to protect Sergio from sunlight?

He was quick and ready for the impact that time, he put his hands by his head to actually give more padding and protection to his head for the impact to reduce impulsive force. Going 90 degree onto a barrier like that is always not a good thing. He was probably going there and the impact velocity must be more than 120km/h.

Lewis did lock up on his Q3 lap which could be a problem for the race but did better than Rosberg which is a relief as he would not have been the ideal part of the track for starts to make up positions and would have been held back by the race pace of the Mercedes. I wonder if he can move up in Massa's spot though if there is any steward investigation.

It was Button. he cut the chicane and abandoned the lap, and let Rosberg through.

Also, with that chicane, could the not add some barriers so that it gently slopes towards the barrier after the chicane rather than a sudden barrier? I know this removes the run off, but it reduces the impact of a crash like Perez's.

Hope he is Ok, and able to race if he wants to

I could be wrong, but wasn't the Perez crash on the same lap, or was it the next one?
 
I feel Perez underestimated his ride out of the racing line. Can anyone with more experience confirm that if Perez wanted to, he could start to slow down way earlier than he did?

Not trying to imply he's a bad driver, I just think in his eagerness to make a good lap, he thought he could still save it and ended up crashing instead of aborting it.

Not taking away anything from Hamilton, he is a fantastic driver... but I preferred him last year... where he blamed it on himself... maybe he's just going through a phase where he thinks he should be winning everything not Vettel, I dunno...

And yes, I believe Massa moved out the way when it was safe to and as quickly as he could, so Lewis' gesture was uncalled for. Then the next lap he had the red flags because of Perez's nasty crash, which I am glad that he came away from relatively unhurt.
 
Encouraging day for McLaren in terms of their pace, but pretty horrendous in terms of end result. According to Hamilton, it was the team's strategy to keep him in the pits for so long (though he didn't question it) so apparently wasn't any issue with his car. McLaren clearly don't learn from their mistakes of not doing banker laps (Monza '08, Malaysia '10) - no doubt their banks of nerds back in mission control theorised the 'optimum' strategy for Q3 but didn't factor any common sense into the equation. I don't use this word often but it's applicable here - fail. And then they doubled up on this mistake by sending him out way too long before the restart :banghead:

Hopefully at least Button will be able to push Seb for the win and deny him some points because the title race is becoming a non-contest and i'm losing interest in it fast. Webber looks a beaten man and even he can't be relied upon to test Vettel. Taking nothing away from Seb though, his pole lap was awesome and he's without question been the driver of the year so far. I was surprised to hear Hamilton say he was certain that he had the pace for pole, which I think was a hint of bravado - he would have had to improve by a full 7 tenths on his Q2 time at least to have accomplished this.

On that note, it seems clear that Red Bull still possess this advantage with their exhaust mapping that they unleash for Q3 only. Even Webber improved by 7 tenths over Q2, despite being half a second down on his team mate. What's strange about this is that Renault don't enjoy this same characteristic with their cars in qualifying which is kind of hard to reconcile. But if it's not the exhaust, what else is it? :confused:
