Well, this is my first post, so uhm... Hi guys!
So, first of, I'm a Forza player. And I enjoy that game quite a lot, because until GT5 is actually released, Forza 3 is second to none. To me, it will be, once GT5 hits, though.
Now, I for one am quite happy with 200 cars being premium. I mean, it's an ok count. Looking at Forza, it might have 500 cars by now, but most of them are fairly useless.
You might know that Forzaa uses a Performance Index (PI) system to classify it's cars, with a total of eleven classes. At first, this is all pretty nice, but as you start to get a littlee bit more into the game, you'll start to notice all the flaws that come with said system. In theory, two cars featuring the same PI value should perform very similar, but in Forza, they don't. If you're browsing through the available cars and start to test drive some of them, you'll quickly notice how some of them can't be made anywhere near decently performing in any given class of PI.
Dependingn on the kind of person you are, this might or might not bother you, as the AI isn't very challenging and can be beat with basically any car. But, as soon as you're racing online or using the split screen multiplayer and face an opponent of equal skill, your car choice starts to matter. A lot.
To give an example on this one, I've taken two cars from one of the more recent DLC car packs for a spin around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. A Gumpert Apollo Sport (the 2008 model, labeled to be the 2010 one in the game...) and a Mosler MT900S. Both cars were in R3 class, both featured a PI of 800, so both should be quite close as far as lap times go. This wasn't anywhere near the case, though; the Mosler was a whooping 20 seconds faster. 20 seconds during a single lap. That's one second per kilometer.
As far as I am concerned, I don't want to be left in the dust just because of the car I chose to drive. Thus, I'll have to go with one of Forza's better cars. I actually have to filter through all those 500 cars and am left with just a few cars per class that I could actually use.
All things considered, there are maybe a hundred cars in Forza that are even worth driving. And just like GT's premium cars, it all depends on your personal luck whether your dream car is viable - or with GT5, premium.
This might, of course, happen with GT as well, but I'm kinda inclined to believe that PD is putting more time into quality testing and, while probably not being perfectly balanced, won't have such glaring flaws as Forza.
So, in the end, it doesn't matter to me whether I'm left with 100/500 (20%) of the cars in a game being viable, or 200/1000 (20%) are premium and worth looking at. The more I think about, the more I start to believe that GT5 will provide me witha wider choice of cars I could enjoy amongst it's premium model than Forza. All it would need to is make sure that half of the premium cars can actually compete in their associated races.
So, from a Forza players perspective: Don't gripe over the amount of premium cars in GT5. Chances are, you'll getting more out of it than out of any other racing game available.
