Well I started out tonight with a game of Domination, which I was put into mid-game, and I finished at 4-0-4 I believe. I was happy to get a 1:1 K/D. Right now, until I get any kind of game going again, I am completely happy hitting a 1:1 K/D or slightly better every game. Then I decided to try some Hardcore Team Deathmatch. The first game I played I started out okay and ended up finishing badly. So I figured I would give the game type another shot and did even worse with something like a 4-0-10 or 3-0-10. Either way, it was bad and I decided to leave that game.
I took a few minutes to look over my statistics, my custom classes, and mainly give myself a second to cool off and relax. I was pretty frustrated and at one point muttered to myself, "I hate this stupid game and cannot seem to do anything right in it".
Next, I decided to give the Hardcore Team Deathmatch a break and went back to Domination. This match drew Karachi for the map. I decided this game I would move from spot to spot fairly slowly and deliberately slow myself down. I started out decently with a few kills and then took a turn towards the bad with a guy nailing me a couple times with the Intervention. He did a nice job of seeing me and taking me out with the weapon, as I watched both deaths on the Kill Cam; the second death could have maybe been avoided had I been paying more attention to a building above. After dieing twice, I took a deep breath and slowed myself down a bit more and ended up netting myself a 12-0-4 I believe, having the highest K/D of the game, and my team winning. That felt nice.
My last game for the night was another Domination game. This time I drew Quarry for the map. Started out with a quick death and ended up finishing with a 7-0-4. Unfortunately, this match was my previously mentioned 200-199 score game and my team just barely lost. For whatever reason, my team kept trying to grab Point B instead of retaking Point C. I worked my way to Point C several times, but did not have the support to take the position. I spent the majority of this game taking the less traveled routes on the map, trying to flank the enemy, and move slowly/deliberately to avoid giving my position away too suddenly.
If you can actually manage to take a deep breath during matches, you have pretty much surpassed me as a CoD player. Or at least as a human being.

Sound like you are pretty collected, even during matches, and that's an excellent start. 👍 Hardcore TDM is an totally different game, so major adjustments are needed. Limited UAV/HUD, more camping, more damage, so take those things into consideration, then tailor your game to match it.
One trick to get your k/d up, for an average players like us, is to let the killstreak do the work for you. Like for me, I will never be that guy who goes around shooting five guy dead for every one of my deaths. When that actually happens, I feel like calling & emailing all my CoD friends!(Don't worry, very rarely happens). From my experience, integral part of the most effective killstreak is an Predator(five kills). You rarely screw this one up, once you get used to it. For me, the standard is 5(Predator), 7(Harrier), then 9(Pave Low Helicopter). 7 & 9 can stay in the air at the same time, which makes them more effective IMO.
Since you are still trying to keep up with "1" k/d, I guess you could try 3(UAV), 4(Care Pkg), 5(Predator). Something like that. Just be careful with the care package, because people will try to get you before you can get the crate. Just keep distance from the enemies when you call it in, then have your teammates around, so you won't be the sole target, if they try to intercept the package. Or if your teammates are between your position & the enemy, that would be ideal.
Those are some mighty big shoes to fill.
Bird didn't wear 9 1/2?
Edit:
P.S.
Justin, you gotta let me help you with your game. Online can be brutal, if the match making doesn't help you. Unlike XBL, I can't guide you with the headset/com, but at least you can use me as a training target in private matches!
