I've recently bought a few biographies of racing drivers and there have been a few stories of crazy driving on the public roads (mainly F1 drivers).

What stories have you guys heard/read?

Giancarlo Fisichella was given a road driving ban for a period of time last year for speeding in a 30 mph zone.. Theres a thead about it somewhere.

Edit: It was actually 148 kph in a 60 kph zone, thread is here.

I liked the story of Montoya losing his licence in France May 2003, he was doing 204kph in a 130kph zone, apparently the police guy gave him a fine of 1000 euros then was stunned when Montoya pulled out his wallet and offered to pay the fine there and then haha.

There's Monza 1994, when Alesi retired with a gearbox problem, he got out of the Ferrari straight into his street Alfa, his brother took the passenger seat, and Jean drove back to Avignon at 220 km/h. He got pulled over by police who, recognising his Ferrari overalls (which he was still wearing), let him go.

I remember being amused when Jenson Button was stopped in France doing c145mph in a BMW 330d.

BMW were clearly having a hard time with it because they were supposed to be all paternal, and to admonish Jens, who was only 20 at the time. Problem was, he'd been caught going that fast in a diesel, and they thought that that was just great. "F1 driver caught at > 140mph in one of our sports diesels ha ha ha ha ha ha! See, diesels can be sporty", was what they were wanting to crow from the highest roof top.

So, you have:
- young driver in powerful car
- police involved (natch)
- national newspaper coverage
- PR people all tied up in knots.

Doesn't get too much better than that.
