Tried Race B. Started/finished 4th. Fun race.

Connection again was 1 red bar but went up to yellow before the start.

Car in 3rd signaled to let me by on L3 but I decided to decline and followed comfortably till the end, catching up to the 2 in front and putting some distance between the cars behind. Classy to offer. :cheers:

To my defense, the guys in front of me were fighting each others and I had to hit the brake and I start sliding just as he was alongside me.

Got a 1:29.590 in race B qualy after 15 laps. I think that's my cue to dump Maggiore and focus on not sucking at autopolis this week.

Weirdly enough I'm kind of liking auto's flow in a gr.2. This has never been my favourite track, but in the NSX it's pretty smooth. Hopefully I can beat the 5% kudos target time.
 
After a month of inactivity because of not renewing my PS+ sub, I'm back in action.

Wasn't feeling it with these dailies for this week so I just decided to focus on Daily Race A and call it a week.

I did only four attempts and two of them were just filthy in terms of the quality of racing but then again this is Tsukuba after all and Daily Race A so its to be expected. The third race it cleansed my palate as to what I've witnessed in those last two races as I was treated to a good battle for P1 but didn't have enough laps to catch up and thus finishing P2.

The last session I had for today was something and it almost costed me a possible win on that track. Started on pole and then going to turn 4-5 I've gone wide and the person who started second took advantage of the situation. And then I screwed up again on the penultimate corner where I accidentally tapped the person who overtook me for the lead and it caused a effect where it distracted me and it led to me going down to P3. Laps 2-3 it was all about trying to regain my lost positions and I managed to regain the lead again thanks to the P2 person going wide on the same corner. From there it was smooth sailing to a win.

 
I was wondering what the hate is for the Gr4 races when FF cars dominate? I have been racing for about a year and I am not very good. I just broke 20K in DR points for the first time, and if it was not for combos like this week's race B (Lago Maggiore West -Gr4) I would never even be there. My QT time is 127.7XX (a second below my Kudo target) but last week I could barely get a sub 1:40 at Monza and could not even get within 3 seconds of my target time in Race A (Tokyo Outer Central Loop).

The Scirocco (or RCZ) on TSC 1 or 0 and BB +4 or +5 is just a dream to drive on tracks like LM West or Interlagos or Fuji. If you put the time in for LM West there are no tough turns on the track. (Unlike the main Lago Maggiore course where there are 2 or 3.)

Anyway, back to my question. I am pretty sure (certain, actually..lol) that the Gr4 FF cars hide lots of my driving weaknesses and thus I can do better with less skills. Is that why better drivers don't like the races where Gr4 FF cars dominate?

Also, I am always surprised to see or hear newer drivers not like the GR4 FF races. I can't be the only "less skilled" driver who loves these, can I???
 
FF cars tend to understeer compared to rear wheel drive so that could explain some distaste for them. I think the RCZ and Scirocco are outliers in that they drive really well despite being FF. Plus as mentioned you can go with TC 0 without issue since you won't spin out.

I haven't seen any outright hate for these cars though...
 
I think the 'hate' is a combo deal. A lot of the time the cars are understeery no matter what you do, but they were also massively overpowered with the old BoP so no matter you out drove them through a corner or set of corners they would simply blast by you on exit with hyper exaggerated acceleration.

The other part would be the people racing in them. Far too many times they would just let the car understeer into someone and push them off or use that knowledge to block the track in handling sections. I know many times in mixed races I could move around them on am outside line, but if I wasn't 100pct ahead on exit I would simply get wrecked as they understeer straight in to me and push me off track or into the wall.

They're not bad cars exactly, just an entirely different thing to drive and as you have mentioned, the rocket straight line speed does help hide some handling issues, both for the car and for driver skill.
 
Running some Race B's to let some steam off as I relearn the nord, not particularly quick here, starting about 10th and not seeing where more time is going to come from. What a **** show it is though, some of the dirtiest driving and 'revenge' punt nonsense I've seen in some time. Sorry I overtook you, good to see you're right on my bumper going down the hill and I'm sure you're going to brake on time -cough-.

I don't know what it's like running at the front, but that there's basically 1 line around here makes the mid-pack a nightmare.
 
To me it is like Interlagos. If you are in pole position 1, 2 or 3 then you should be safe at turn 1 and then everything is ok as the idiots battle and can't catch you. You just need to run clean and keep pace. Unlike Fuji, Monza, etc where your whole race can end on turn one.

I agree. Mid or back of the pack is really rough...

So... Race A... I start 4th, then punted to 8th. So I revenge punt the offender off.

A good, clean battle ensues from P1 to me in P4 for 4 laps til P1 goes off and I get to 2nd with the the previous P1 now behind me.

He punts me off at the hairpin on the last lap, so I punt him off on the last corner and we end up 5th and 6th.

And I still get a Clean Race Bonus. Great. 🤔

I don't usually revenge-punt, but I've had a few rums and just felt like it
 
Ran a couple "A" races and a "B" race. The 1st "A" race was basically bumper cars at the 1st corner of the 1st lap. Someone in a white one kept hitting several people. And it wasn't like he was trying to keep people from passing him. He would just run them off the track along with himself; on more than 1 occasion. He hit me at turn 2 and I ran up against the wall. I got back on track and stayed at it. He kept hitting others and I managed to get passed him on lap 2 and stay ahead of him for good. Every so often, I'd look back and see him hitting someone else. It's like he joined the lobby JUST to knock people around and be an @$$hole. The 2nd race was much better with not a whole lot of hitting or bumping or anything. I managed to finish a few places from where I started, so I felt food.

Race "B" wasn't very productive. I qualified 10th and finished 10th. I chose the Evo, which wasn't the best idea. I'd run a couple races yesterday with the Scirocco and did decently well. But I just like the Evo because I can throw it around and the AWD keeps me on the track, better. Still, no penalties, today, so I call that a decent day, lol.

There's been some great, clean racing at Autopolis at least. Had a 4 lap battle with the guy in P3 'til I took him off 😭 from my bumper view it looked close but no contact, but the game decided there was. He thanked me for waiting afterwards.

Looks like what @Tidgney was talking about with the 'box' around the car being bigger than the poly model. Also I would say they came across without looking or checking. They were always inviting contact like that.
Nice to see someone running the 08 NSX. Gorgeous car.

Because FF race cars feel all wrong, mostly because it is wrong. The car is being pulled instead of pushed, you need to wait so long to get on the throttle, so much understeer, it's just a joyless configuration designed for commuting not tossing the thing about.
 
Autopolis is kicking my rear. Finding it real hard to break the 1:40 barrier. Current best is 1:40.15x with optimal 1.39.2xx.

How the heck are the aliens putting down 1:33 is beyond me.

Edit: I guess ranting on GTP works, laid down a 1:39.227. I should do this more often.

Enjoy your success in Gr4 FF - embrace it! You will naturally get a better QT time because the spread between the top and bottom is narrower.

I found my first success on those cars and it was folks on this board, who don't like FFs, patiently explained and coached me on how deal with the understeer on exit and it became very natural for me. The techniques introduced brake and throttle modulation and that has been valuable in all subsequent car classes.

Gr 2 cars are more than just faster Gr 3 cars. They have much higher downforce and respond better to partial braking vs full braking. Try entering some corners with light braking and feel yourself go around the corners faster. That leads to a faster exit and fast times.

Long straights still need full braking but then gradually lift off as you are approaching the apex. This is difficult and takes practice.

Watch some of the top 10 lapper and how they are applying the brakes.

It is harder than Gr 3 and Gr 4. It is natural that your relative time will be further off the standard in this class.

I've been bouncing from 95-99 SR every race this week. It feels like it's alternating between -/+5.

Overall the behavior around me on A & B has been pretty bad (since these combos require brakes). Yet I get the red SR?....I know everyone says that. :lol:

Replay of 2 incidents I had today.

1st, my fault, not much i could do, I'm glad it worked out OK. 2nd is a 3 car fight at the end which I was lucky not to get tangled up in.

As mentioned, it looks like he pulled to the right while you had the nose beside him. All you did was give a spot back for his mistake. At least that's my take.

Yes, the braking/throttle modulation seems easier for me in FF cars right now. I think it helps that understeer is less intimidating than oversteer. In the sense that if you do your time trials and hit your braking points you know when you can safely be aggressive on the throttle. Understeer hardly is a surprise.

With oversteer on some of the twitchy cars, I still fear it. It can (seemingly...lol) come out of nowhere. So, that gets me cautious on throttle input on exit from a turn, even when I know my line and speed are good. Too many unexpected button-hooks into a wall coming out of a turn gets me too slow on average.

I am hoping that I will get more confident in gr3 cars. I have felt ok in the Gr 3Vantage of late at -2 BB and that car used to feel twitchy. So, hopefully it will come.

B — FF fest. Always trash.

Oh well, that does give lots of time to listen to music and keep going through the backlog, so not too bad then.

One and done for Race C tonight as things did not go well at all.

I set my qualifying time set at a 1:35.920 I entered a race starting in P10 with bunch of A+/A rated drivers again. Right where I thought I would be. But I didn't stay there after I ran off track in turns 13 and 14 after getting my entry angle all wrong. Dropped to P14. Messed up turn 12 next lap and fell to dead last. I managed to catch up to the small pack in the back, but then had someone stick their nose into me when I had the apex covered in the hairpin turn. I gave a disapproving bump in retaliation. Run wide at turn 12 again after that, but dive into the pits afterwards which was planned on the end of lap 5. Run too deep and go off track in turn 1 after my stop. I did actually not mess up the next lap, but I rage quit after I messed up turns 13 and 14 again the next lap. I do believe that Autopolis is going on my do not race list going forward. Just a terrible time overall. But I enjoy the Gr.2 cars so I had to try at least.

Did some practice laps in the Ferrari for Race B, but I don't know if I'll actually race the rest of the week. I usually want no part of the FF fest but I want to so some racing this week. I'm sure I'll give in and go with an FF car anyway.

The Vantage is my go to for Gr. 3 races. Once you get used to it and know it's limits it feels great in a race. I think it's a great car in most Gr.3 races that not a lot of others use.

Squeezed everything I could out of the cars I love most for Race B qualy, 10th the best I managed. Jumped in an RCZ and immediately beat my best time by half a second for a pole start.

Sigh.

Practice, first off. But I'm sure you do that already. Otherwise, do like some of us have done before: qualify in one car & race in a different one. Do just a qualifying session until you get a time you're happy with. Then, enter a race in the car you want. Still start in the top 3 & win away.
