Connected or have access to the net for free worldwide eventually or is that just a pipe dream for people like me? Access for free is a stretch probably...

Eventually yes, but Eventually can mean a very long time...

I don't think we will. Too much money to be yanked in, methinks. Although things will get cheaper - they already have. I remember a time when mobile broadband was £50 a month for 200mb of data, and just yesterday I got an MMS message from 3 offering me a gig for £5.

Remeber, nothing is "free". "Free" just means somebody else is paying for it for you. Then again, considering the path the world is on, and that the US Department of Housing and Urban Development now insists that all public housing be served with broadband at no cost to the tenants, I'd say that yes, eventually, it will be "free".

I doubt it will ever be offered free here in Australia.

Yeah, there is alot being made out of Internet, it would be unlikely to see anything free being offered when it could be making money...there's to many Greedy multi-million dollar companies everywhere, but right now Aus Net is a little pre-historic lol.
Peace,

And don't forget Aussie boys, when our "national high-speed broadband network" gets organised, we'll be paying more than we are now. ;)

Eventually you'll pay for it in your taxes, though. And people without computers will be forced to pay for internet they don’t use! Oh god damn it!

As I recall, to some extent Google has viewed access to the internet as a "right" and thus has been pumping a lot of cash into extending and opening (?) WiFi networks across the country. My guess is that if you live in metropolitan areas, in the not-so-distant future, we will all have free WiFi access, albeit presumably severely limited and otherwise monitored greatly.

When was the last time a service that people paid for ended up being free?

Someone's got to pay for it. Last I checked, you still pay for water, electricity, and local telephone usage (in most places that aren't hotels or dormitories), so I highly doubt any type of internet service provider will ever truly be free.

I know there are some cities that are offering free Wifi, and it seems that more places are offering it. I've heard that Tacoma is building a network and Holland has a "free wifi" network, although I don't know if that actually is anything.

Interwebs? What is interwebs?

In all seriousness, I don't know and to be honest I don't care all that much.

HACKr says: I don't want the government being all up in my internet connection.
lmao! That figure's.

I'd doubt we'd ever get free internet here in Australia, let alone in a town in Australia with 300 people where it costs $40 p/month for 512k. :indiff:
