Sorry - is there actually a track through Las Vegas? Like is there actually a race held there these days? Cause someone mentioned you don't drag up the hill at Monaco and there's a pretty big difference between the two.

I'd rather a whole lap of the place than a drag. Who knows what we'll get.
From what i've seen i think there is the drag strip and a road course for vegas. If you look at the pics/vids, there's road behind the start of the drag strip and curved track at the end. We've seen screen caps of cars turning @ vegas, and the track map from the hacked vid show signs of some tight corner sections at either end of the main drag straight.

I´m wondering the same thing..

But does anyone know how is this going to work? Will they finally add teh Neutral gear. And if so, it would be great if you could choose the reverse when downshifting from neutral..
Yeah thats a good idea downshift to reverse.

something to consider in drag racing:

Part of the rush in drag racing is the feeling of door-to-door flat out acceleration. Rowing through the gears while trying to inch out the guy next to you is like trying to out brake a competitor that you've been following for 3 laps in an effort to squeak by.

The problem with drag racing shown so far in GT4: In a close race, you won't be able to see your competitor, and won't know who won aside from the 1ST or 2ND displayed at the end. This is further magnified by the fact that it looks like you have about 40 feet between cars.

With the view locked straight ahead, your competitor will be lost off the side of the screen until he has a huge head on you, or you put the hurt on him so bad that he appears in your rear view mirror. Blasting down the strip in real life, you can glance over and see your 1/2 car length lead, but not so here.

They could include an arrow on the side of the screen so you know if he's just ahead, just behind or if it's neck and neck. Alternatively the rear view could be replaced with a side view for drag races so you can peek over and take a look.

how to F%^k your tranny, axel, and pretty much your entire drivetrain fast... get it up to 180 mph then drop it into reverse... brilliant! 👍

It's not like you can't drop it into reverse at 180mph anyway...

I wouldn't hurt if they just had a camera that looked sideways, since you don't have to steer the car at all. That is, unless they implement more pronounced torquesteer and whatnot.

actually, u cant. unless u know how to engage a spur gear at a few thousand rpms. and computer controlled trannies definately wont let u do it. autos can but it'll damage your tc quite a bit and ur engine will die.

That would work and would be a lovely addition!

I'm just wondering what fun there can be in drag racing in a video game, and more so as a viewer. I mean apart from the speed there is no thrill in it accept the fact that your car is faster than the other. The whole lacks technique and style and I find it a shame that so many players want "unfun" drag racing in the game.

Life is full of turns it's not all about straight lines!!!

There's more to it than that. You have reaction times, shift points, and many other things like that.

One thing about threads more than 10 pages, sometimes, you'll never know if people will make about... 20+ replies so you can't read them all. And it can be tough to tell there were new replies on the preceding page. But glad to see this is a successful thread.

Now, let me ask you this question, GTPlanet. We know that 50 or 100 tracks will be the goal for Gran Turismo 4. But do you think that every track may have its own drag race? For example, imagine on one of the long stretches of road on the New York City track, that you can have a high-speed contest between yourself and someone else. One person had posted a thread highlighting on GT4 Prologue videos of the McLaren F1 in action. The F1 took on the Toyota GT-One and such on the kinked-up stretches of road on the New York circuit. Also, imagine if Grand Valley, Tokyo R246, Tsukuba, or whatever had special drag events. Do you think that anticipated 50-100 tracks could be well over 50 or 100 with drag racing events?

Be like a modified version of the License Test system that shifts everything appropriate onto the circuit, but I don't see it happening.

Sven meant you can throw it in reverse in the game as is, with no damage to be sustained.

Yeah but only if it's possible to jump the start etc, which it doesn't look like it is :(

Instead of very late at night, it's morning time around my way this time, so no joking about the time of day around here, Eagle. ;)

So far, no successful drag racing game is on the market. My stepfather, however, has a PS1 game based on IHRA Drag Racing. No, not NHRA. IHRA. Anyhow, if you don't get off in time, you lose. You bang into a wall, you're disqualified (John Force found that out the hard way a couple of years ago). You accelerate off the line BEFORE the amber lights, you redlight. And since you can't break on the line, don't worry about breaking or having Bye runs. I say "you can't break" since someone asked if engine failure was going to be in GT4, and his thread was closed almost immediately.

Gran Turismo will debut drag racing, and all they need to stir the pot are the HKS drag cars, like from GT2. Both of which are Nissans- a 180SX and an R33 Skyline respectively. My thing is, the drag Skyline has four-wheel drive. And I don't think 4WD translates to drag racing success because you'll need some get-up-and-go from the rear wheels. For those that follow sport compact/import drag racing here in the States, you may remember an AEM-sponsored NSX drag racer. When highlighted on former Speed Channel show "Hi-Red Tuners," the driver said that in order to make the most of its drag power, the engine had to be moved to the front. So on the drag strips of Americana where sport compacts and imports are in town, you have a front-engined NSX to rule the strip. I wouldn't be surprised if you can tune and modify your car so that you can make the most of its capabilities when drag racing.

For some weird reason i remember drag racing in gt2, but i cant find it when i checked the CD, am i crazy?

I get home from a vacation in New Orleans for a week, and I am greeted with this wonderful thread! :D I don't want to go back and quote each statement I had a reply to over the last 16 pages, so I'll just lump them all together and throw out a few general statements.

I can't say how happy I am about the inclusion of this. It belongs in any game that celebrates the automobile, no matter if you enjoy drag racing or not. I find it pleasantly amusing how many more people are excited about this mode now, than there were when this was discussed before the confirmation came out. I like that kind of openmindedness.

I saw the video on another site, and was pumped up about how it looked. I was, however, disapointed in some of the things I saw. On one of the videos, you could hear the car bouncing off the rev limiter while it waited for the light to go green. This indicates to me, that all we will have to do is hold the X button down, and let the game do the rest. I am hoping this will be addressed in the final production version, otherwise it will validate many of the opinions that drag racing is boring and requires no skill. That is not drag racing.

It would not be difficult to require proper timing on the launch to avoid Red Lighting and losing the race. I hate to go back to NFS:U all the time, but they did certain things very well. If I recall correctly, during the test runs you would blow your run if you hit the gas too soon. The bracket racing idea mentioned on page 6 (or somewhere around there) would be an outstanding addition, as it would bring driver reaction time (which I would like to see included in the data given at the end of a race) and shift points.

Overall, I cannot be happier about having drag racing in the game, and the screen shots are wonderful. I don't really care if they have more than one drag strip location ( I think the differences in altitude, temps, and track composition will be too deep for most people's interest to warrent it's inclusion), but it would be nice to have a real strip in addition to the Vegas one which simply appears to be a street race made legal.

In the video, you can clearly see the tree drop, so I am hoping the final version of this mode will be fine tuned to incorporate the variables which actually makes drag racing so much fun. Either way, I'm happy to see it's in there!

Oh, one more thing I forgot. Drag racing is not just an American sport. In fact, I recall a few shows on the Speed Channel last month which covered the drag racing events in New Zealand. I'd be surprised if they didn't have strips in Australia as well as many other countries.

Yessiree! Just what I wanted to see...tree, red-lights, burnouts...
Hope they include timeslips.

All you people who say drag-racing is "un-fun" (Yiksato, from FRANCE?)
must've never done it. I go to the drag strip every Thursday night to watch and occasionally race my real-life cars (which are rather slow).
It is a true measure of just how fast and quick I can be in my car.
'93 Cavalier RS 3.1 (AT) = 16.38s @ 87mph
'88 S-10 2.5 (MT) = 19.00s @ 68mph
'90 Dodge Dynasty = will never race it...would blow up!

When GT4 comes out, I will be able to drag all those cars I've dreamed about racing down the strip. I think that's awesome!

Over here in nz ive seen the croydens and heat treatments skyline run 8.5s which was AWSOME!!!There are some pretty phat cars around dunnis at the moment to when i think about. There is a twin turbo supra for NZ$21,000 and i was wondering if that was cheep considering it only 41,000ks on it?

I'm really happy :dopey: there is drag in GT4 because it will be very fun to run a 2 player battle on the Vegas strip, I've been waitin' for that for a long time.

I'm not the biggest drag fan in the world but anyway, It brings diversity to the incredible game GT4 will be.

See ya :sly:
