Okay, I've heard some guys talking about performance dropping off after a few thousand miles. Let's have the definitive answer; is this true and if so, when does it happen? I'm sure the 'experts' know this one.

Cheers

it has been said that the car does wear just like a normal car would.

The more miles, the less performance, I don't know if it has ever been listed at a cetain mile on your car... like 3000, 4000... I think it is something you notice slowly.

I am sure someone has an artile on this. :D

I guess I'll just have to buy new cars when they seem to get slower. I might start saving my Polyphony 001 for important races. No that's a stupid idea...I'll just have to win another one.

Well, I cloned my F686/M. Now that the clone is >1100 miles, it's down from 975 HP to 953. 'course it was mucho $$$.....

Trust me, when you go for the F1 series, every little bit helps, so keep one pristine just for this series.

you sure thats not cause you haven't changed your oil? When was the last time you did that?!

exactly...

if you know your about to run a long series, just go ahead and change it before you start...

to everyones disappointment... they don't change the oil in the middle of a race... only tires... besides, when was the last time you saw a guy changing oil on the pit crew in 12 seconds!!!

Ok ok, I DO change before I start a series. And I know you can't change oil in a pit, that would just be rediculous. It takes the guys 15 minutes to change my oil at QuickLube (:

But there should be a way to change it between races or something. There are a couple 10 race series that have 15 to 20 lap races. That's over 150 LONG laps without an oil change. Talk about engine deterioration! Maybe what I'm wanting should be added in GT4, heh heh.

sounds like a new thread in the GT4 forum!! ;)

On ten race series. I win the minimum # of races (6 or 7) and exit out. It saves me time and engine wear. I can go back and beat those races as single races. It might adversly affect my win %, but I don't really care because I win almost every race I enter anyways.

Not that it matters anymore (because I have over 7 billion credits [us version]), but I like to finish all the races for the extra credits. Or maybe just because I like to race (:

It's true that engine wear can decrease HP over time, but with regular oil changes you can actually raise HP. Granted, I've only successfully done this with one car, but that's because it's the only one that really got my attention: I bought a Zonda C12S and maxed it out, with oil change, to 1094 HP. Considering the credits I spent getting it in that kind of shape, I decided that I would change the oil after every race, even single events. Since then, I have broken it in to 1128 HP.

I'd like to know if anyone else has had the same experience with any other cars.

Wow, that's really interesting. I wonder if it was just a game bug or if you really are increasing the car's performance by using and taking care of it. The big time racers say that a car gradually becomes used to the drive, not the other way around. It would be interesting to test their theory, and maybe implement something to that effect in later Gran Turismo games.

Thanks for the info!

Within the 1st quarter or so of an engine's life, it is still being broken in, and HP/overall performance will increase at first (while all the mechanical components get acquainted)... Then over time, slowly decline...

My (real-life) Camaro Z28 showed more HP on dyno, a better 1/4 mile time, and better 0-60 time with the same tires after 22,000 miles!

My Corvette C5R is increasing at 1bhp per race at the minute, up to 1011bhp at the minute, and the increase is irrespective of oil changes.

The oil actually does increase HP. Change it after every race and you'll see. also when you win or buy a new car change the oil. The HP on my Lancer went up 50.

Breaking in your engine does have an effect in the game

From about 300km a car has around 3% more horsepower, then at around 800-900 it drops off again, and then stays at a level roughly 1% above the starting level of the car.

The oil change add from 4-6% depending on the car, and this drops off as the oil degrades, this takes about 300km, but you should change it often to keep it at the maximum benefit.

I've got 100 cars and I tested half dozen to figure this out, when I first noticed an increase without having tuned a car.

Useful to know for those races where the extra little bit counts.
